3 Introduction Thank you for purchasing this digital camcorder. Everything you need to take quality digital photos and videos is included with your digital camcorder. Vivitar makes capturing those special moments as easy as possible. Note: Your digital camcorder requires an SD Memory card (up to 32GB) for normal use. SD Memory cards are not included and need to be purchased separately. Important: It is recommended to use a Class 4 SD Memory card or higher. This camera is a plug and play device. You can download the pictures and videos captured by your camera without the software by directly accessing the camera s memory card from your computer. It is recommended however that you install the Vivitar Experience Image Manager Software to enjoy the full Vivitar experience. Please read this manual carefully first in order to get the most out of your digital camcorder. 5 Preparing Your Camcorder CHARGING THE BUILT-IN BATTERY Important: Before charging the battery, make sure you are not near water and that your hands are dry. In order to charge your built-in lithium battery: 1) Power off the camcorder. 2) Connect your camcorder with the provided USB/AV cable to the USB port of your computer or to the provided AC Charger (and then to an electric socket) as shown above. 3) The red LED will light up indicating that your camcorder is in charging mode. 4) Allow the battery to charge for at least 3 hours before using the first time. 5) The charge light will turn off when the battery is fully charged. Note: The energy status of the power is displayed on LCD as shown below: Full battery power Medium battery power Low battery power A red battery icon will flash on the LCD when the battery power is insufficient. Shortly thereafter your camcorder will power off. 4

6 INSTALLING THE SD MEMORY CARD Important: Before installing the SD Memory card, make sure you are not near water and that your hands are dry. SD compatible memory card of up to 32GB must be installed in order to capture videos and photos. It is recommended to use a Class 4 SD Memory card or higher. To install the SD Memory Card: 1) Press the lever to open the SD Memory Card / USB Slot Compartment cover. 2) Insert the SD memory card correctly in the direction as shown in the illustration. 3) Press the memory card until you hear a Click sound. Note: After you insert an SD memory card, the SD card icon will appear on the top right of the LCD, indicating that your SD memory card has been installed successfully. The media you capture will now be stored on the card and not in the internal memory. Before using the camcorder, be sure to format the card with the camcorder (see the Format section further on in the manual for instruction on how to format the card). Formatting will delete all data on the SD Memory Card. Download all the media to your computer before you format the card. Do not remove the SD Memory Card during formatting as this may damage the card and render it unusable. Images saved to the memory card are not lost when your camcorder s power runs low or on replacing the battery. We strongly recommend downloading your photos and videos regularly to your computer. Make sure that the card is not locked. Locked cards do not allow images to transfer to the card. 5

7 TURNING ON THE CAMCORDER Press the POWER button to turn on the camcorder. USING THE CAMCORDER 6

8 Initial Camcorder Setup When powering the camcorder ON for the first time the camcorder will take you through the initial setup. SETTING THE CAMERA LANGUAGE You will first be prompted to select a language for the camera. The Language selection menu will appear. Select the language of your choice by pressing the UP and DOWN direction control buttons. Then press the OK button to confirm the selection. SETTING THE DATE AND TIME The next step in the initial camera setup is to set the date and time on the camcorder. Set the date and time as desired by pressing the RIGHT and LEFT direction control buttons to choose the specific part of the date/time setting and then the UP and DOWN buttons to change and specify each setting. Once you have completed setting the time and date, press the OK button to confirm and move to the next part of the camera setup. SETTING THE VIVILINK DEFAULT OPTION Once the date and time have been set, you will be asked to set the default ViviLink destination for photos and videos taken with your camcorder. The ViviLink technology allows you to quickly and easily upload your camcorder s photos and videos to the social networks of your choice with the accompanying software application. 1) First you will be asked to choose the default ViviLink social network for Photos. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to highlight the desired default social network and press the OK button to confirm the selection. 2) Next you will be asked to choose the default ViviLink social network for Videos. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to highlight the desired default social network and press the OK button to confirm the selection. Congratulations! Your camcorder is now ready to use. 7

9 Using the Camcorder Underwater Your Vivitar DVR 850HD is specially designed to be used to capture high quality photos and videos underwater. Before using your camcorder underwater you will need to make sure that the USB cover is sealed tightly. If the USB cover is not closed properly, water will enter the USB port or SD card slot and this will irreversibly damage your camera. The camcorder is water resistant to a depth of 10 feet / 3 meters. Do not dive with your camera beyond this depth. OPENING THE USB COVER In order to charge the battery or insert the SD card into the camcorder, make sure you are away from water and your hands are dry. Turn and hold the camcorder so that the bottom section is facing up. Hold the main body of the camcorder firmly with one hand and use the index finger of the other hand to press and pull the small USB cover lever down to the end as indicated in diagram (A) and (B). You might need to exert some force before hearing a click. The USB cover will be released and will open slowly (C). Gently open the USB cover with your finger. (A) (B) (C) Note: When opening the USB cover, please ensure that your hands are dry. When opening the USB cover, do not hold the LCD screen side as excessive force may destroy the screen joint. In order to assure water resistance, do not attempt to remove or rip off the Rubber Seal inside the USB cover. 8

10 As this is a water resistance camcorder, you may feel that the door is very tight and difficult to open. This is normal. Just follow the above instructions, and make sure to pull the USB cover lever to the end of the slot. CLOSING THE USB COVER After charging and correctly inserting the SD card, make sure the Rubber Seal is clean and no dirt is sticking to it before closing. Close the SD card cover door by gently moving it upwards with your finger. To assure that the cover is closed properly, firmly press down on the section of the USB cover appearing with four lines under the small USB cover lever as shown in diagram (A) below. You will hear a click as it locks into place. (A) (B) Note: Check that the small USB cover lever clicks back into place and is in line with the mark line appearing on the side of the lever as shown in (B). Make sure the water resistant USB cover is closed properly before using the camcorder underwater. If a gap appears reopen and close the USB cover as explained above. 9

11 Camcorder Maintenance MAINTENANCE AND CARE 1) Before using the camcorder underwater make sure you know how the camcorder works. Reading through the Camera Manual will help you get to know your camcorder. 2) Insert the SD card and charge the battery away from water and with dry hands before going underwater. 3) Make sure the water resistant USB cover is closed properly before going underwater with your camcorder. 4) Do not open the USB cover while underwater. 5) Use the camcorder as you normally would to capture photos and videos. 6) The digital camcorder is a delicate device. Please handle your camcorder with care to avoid damaging it. 7) Do not expose your camcorder to heat sources. 8) If the camcorder cannot be used correctly, please use a thin stick or rod and insert it into the reset hole to reset the camcorder. The stick cannot be too sharp in order not to destroy the silicon inside the reset hole. DRYING OUT YOUR CAMCORDER AFTER USING UNDERWATER After capturing images underwater it is normal that some water will enter the body (but not USB cover if closed properly) of the camcorder. This will not damage the camcorder or the images captured. Once out of the water, dry the camera with a dry towel. Any water in the camcorder will eventually dry out by itself. Turn and rest the camcorder top down on a dry and flat surface as shown in the diagram below. This will allow the water to drain. This may take up to 3-4 hours to dry by itself. 10

12 Note: Do not shake the camera to throw the water off. Do not open the USB cover until the camera is totally dry. Turn the camera around in all directions and notice if there are still signs of water before opening the USB cover. If you use the camcorder in sea (salt) water, please rinse the camcorder with fresh clean water as soon as you can afterwards. Sea water has a high salt content, as well as small particles of sand and this may damage the camcorder. Warning: If any water enters the USB cover, this will damage the camcorder. If there is a little water on the edge of the USB cover when the door is opened, dry it carefully with a soft cloth before opening. Do not let the water get inside the USB port or SD Memory card slot. Do not attempt to open the camcorder casing, tamper or dismantle the camcorder. 11

13 Main Camcorder Modes Your camera has different modes for the various camera functions. You can switch modes by pressing the MODE buttons on your camcorder after the camcorder has been powered ON. VIDEO CAPTURE MODE Use this mode to capture videos with your digital camera. This is the default mode when the camera is powered ON. To take a video, aim your camera as desired and press the DV Mode/Shutter button to start the record. A red recording indicator will appear on the LCD screen while the recording is in progress. To stop the recording, press the DV Mode/Shutter button again. The video will be automatically saved to the camcorder s SD memory card. To access the various menus for the Video Capture mode, press the OK/MENU button while in the Video Capture mode. PHOTO CAPTURE MODE Use this mode to capture pictures with your camcorder. After turning on your camcorder, press the DC Mode/Shutter button to open the Photo Capture mode. To take a picture, aim your camcorder as desired and press the DC Mode/Shutter button. The picture will be automatically saved to your camera s SD memory card. To access the various menus for the Photo Capture mode, press the OK/MENU button while in the Photo Capture mode. PLAYBACK MODE (PHOTOS & VIDEOS) Use this mode to view and manage the photos and videos on your camera. After turning on your camera, press the Playback button to open the Playback mode for photos and videos. You can scroll through the photos and videos that you ve previously taken to view, edit or delete them as desired. To access the various menus for the Playback mode for photos and videos, press the OK/MENU button while in the Playback mode. 12

16 Powering ON/OFF Your Digital Camcorder Make sure the batteries have been inserted properly into your digital camcorder. If your camcorder uses a rechargeable lithium battery, make sure the battery is fully charged. Make sure an SDHC card has been inserted into your camcorder. (SDHC card up to 32GB - SD Card not included). It is recommended to use an SDHC Class 4 SD card or higher. POWERING THE CAMCORDER ON Flip open the LCD Panel on the side of the camcorder. The Camcorder will automatically power on. Alternatively, press the Power button to turn your camcorder ON. The camcorder will be in Video Capture mode to start. POWERING THE CAMCORDER OFF To camcorder will automatically power off when the LCD Panel is returned to the side of the camcorder. Alternatively, while the camcorder is on, you can press the Power button at any point to turn your camcorder OFF. You will see a Goodbye splash screen and then the camcorder powers off completely. POWER SAVING AUTO OFF Your digital video camera also has an Auto Power Off feature that will automatically turn off your camcorder after a specific period of time that your camcorder is left idle. The Auto Power Off settings can be set from the Auto Power Off settings menu. 15

17 Changing Camcorder Mode Your camcorder has three main modes: 1) DV (Digital Video) Video Capture Mode - Use this mode to capture videos with your camcorder. 2) DC (Digital Camera) Photo Capture Mode - Use this mode to capture photos with your camcorder. 3) Playback Mode - Use this mode to view the photos and videos you have already taken with your camcorder. When the camcorder is first powered ON, the DV (Video) Capture Mode will be active. The icons that appear on the LCD screen are the best default settings so that you can begin to capture and enjoy clear quality photos. To change the active camcorder mode, make sure the camcorder is powered ON. Press the Press the DC Mode button to select the DC (Photo) mode. Playback Button on the inside wall of the DVR to open the Playback mode. When in Video Capture Mode, this icon will display on the top-left corner of the LCD display. When in Photo Capture Mode, this icon will display on the top-left corner of the LCD display. When in Playback Mode, this icon will display on the top-left corner of the LCD display. 16

18 Navigating the Menus Each camcorder mode has a set of menus specific to that mode. 1) Press the OK (MENU/SET) button to open the menus for the current mode. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT direction control button to scroll between the various menus for the current mode. 3) Press the UP or DOWN direction control button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK (MENU/SET) button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 5) If the selection can be remembered by the camcorder, a selection icon will appear to the right of the selected menu option. Changes made to these options will remain as is until you decide to change them again at a later time. 6) Some menu options are single-use functions that are not remembered by the camcorder and do not display this icon when selected. 7) At any time you can press the DV/DC MODE button to exit the menus and return to the previous mode. Camcorder Features: Flash LED Lights, ViviLink LED FLASH LIGHT FEATURE To increase the lighting in dark situations while capturing videos and photos, use the 2 LED Flash Lights on the front of the camcorder below the lens. LED ON: Press the RIGHT button to activate the LED Lights. LED OFF: Press the RIGHT button again to deactivate the LED Lights. 17

19 VIVILINK FEATURE The ViviLink technology allows you to quickly and easily upload your camcorder s photos and videos to the social networks of your choice with the accompanying Vivitar Experience Image Manager application. A ViviLink destination can be assigned to a photo or video in Capture mode prior to capturing your image or in Playback Mode. Video or Photo Capture Mode: Press the LEFT Quick Function Button to open the ViviLink options. Select a ViviLink option and press OK to save your selection and return to Capture mode. Your selected ViviLink destination appears as an icon on the LCD screen and your camcorder is now ready to capture your video or photo with the selected ViviLink destination. Note: The ViviLink feature is deactivated by default and needs to be activated prior to capturing each video or photo. If you have selected a ViviLink destination during the initial camcorder setup, your destination is automatically selected upon opening the ViviLink menu. Playback Mode: A ViviLink destination can be added to a captured image or changed by accessing the ViviLink menu in Playback Mode. Simply select an image, press the OK (MENU/SET) button and select the ViviLink menu. Select the ViviLink destination and press the OK button. The selected ViviLink destination icon appears on the LCD. 18

20 Video Capture Mode The Video Capture Mode allows you to capture videos with your digital camcorder. When the camcorder is first powered ON, it will be in Video Capture Mode. TAKING A VIDEO 1) While in Video Capture Mode use the LCD display to direct your digital camcorder at the scene you would like to capture. 2) You can magnify your subject up to 4 times using the digital zoom while capturing your photos and recording your videos. Press the UP (Zoom In) or DOWN (Zoom Out) button to zoom in and out. The following Digital Zoom Indicator appears on the right side of the LCD screen: The zoom indicating bar moves up when you Zoom In and moves down when you Zoom Out. The current zoom magnification appears below the Digital Zoom Indicator as you zoom. 3) Press the DV/Shutter button to start the video capture. 4) A red, blinking icon appears at the top of the LCD screen indicating that the recording is in progress. On the top right of the LCD screen, the recording time appears, indicating the amount of elapsed time as the video is being captured. 5) To stop the video recording, press the DV/Shutter button again. 6) The video is automatically saved to the camcorder s SD Memory card. TAKING A VIDEO WITH THE FLIP SCREEN You can also capture your videos using the Flip Screen to quickly and easily include yourself in the video. 1) Simply flip open the LCD panel and then twist downward until it flips and turns ) Hold the camera facing towards you at arm s length (30~45cm). 3) Make sure you can see yourself within the scene on the LCD screen. 4) Look at the lens, and then press the DV/Shutter button to begin recording. It s as easy as twist and shoot! 19

23 Scene Menu The Scene Menu allows you to choose scene settings that let your camcorder adapt properly to your current environment. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the Scene menu. 3) Press UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon reflecting your selection will display on the LCD screen. 9) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. Movie Size Menu The Movie Size menu allows you to choose the desired size of the movies taken by your camcorder. Keep in mind that movies with a higher resolution will also take up more of your camcorder s memory. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the Movie Size menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon reflecting your selection will display on the LCD screen. 9) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. 22

24 Image Quality Menu The Image Quality menu allows you to select the desired quality level of the images taken by your camcorder. Keep in mind that images with a higher image quality level will also take up more memory on your camcorder. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the Image Quality menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon reflecting your selection will display on the LCD screen. 9) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. Anti-Shake Menu The Anti-Shake feature reduces image distortion that can be caused by movement of the camera while capturing the image. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Anti-Shake menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to select and save the desired option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon reflecting your selection will display on the LCD screen. 9) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camera until you manually change the setting or restore the camera s default factory settings. 23

25 White Balance Menu The White Balance feature allows your camcorder to adjust the coloring of the captured images depending on the type of light source in the current environment. Properly adjusting the White Balance setting to match your current environment will allow the camcorder to properly balance the colors in the images that are taken with your camcorder. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the White Balance menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon reflecting your selection will display on the LCD screen. 9) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. Color Effect Menu You can choose to add a color effect to the images taken with your camcorder. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the Color Effect menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. 24

26 Image Sharpness Menu You can set the level of sharpness in the images taken with your camcorder. The sharpness level dictates if the edges of objects in the image are more or less distinct. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the Image Sharpness menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon reflecting your selection will display on the LCD screen. 9) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. Light Exposure Menu The Light Exposure setting helps you control the amount of light that enters your camcorder s lens. This setting should be adjusted when the environment is lighter or darker than normal. When the environment has more light than is needed, reduce the exposure setting (by using the negative - count) to reduce the amount of light allowed into the lens by your camcorder. If the environment has less light (darker) than is needed, increase the exposure setting (by using the positive + count) to increase the amount of light allowed into the lens by your camcorder. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the Light Exposure menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon reflecting your selection will display on the LCD screen. 9) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. 25

27 ISO Menu The ISO menu allows you to set the level of sensitivity that your camcorder has to light in the surrounding environment. When the ISO level is increased, the image sensor in your camcorder will be more sensitive to light and allow you to capture images in lower-light situations. Metering Menu The Metering setting will affect how your camcorder focuses when capturing an image. Depending on your selection, the camcorder will be more sensitive to focusing on particular areas in the display and adjust the image color and lighting accordingly. Center Averages the light metered from the entire frame, but giving greater weight to the subject in the center. Multi Used in standard conditions the camcorder divides and adjusts the settings of the image into several zones for light metering such as complex light conditions, position of subject, brightness, background, direct light and scenes. Spot Meters the area within the spot point frame at the center of the LCD to set the exposure on the subject in the center of the monitor. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the Metering menu. 26

Date/Time Menu When you capture an image with your camcorder, the image will include a time stamp with the date and time that the image was taken. The Date/Time menu allows you to set your camcorder s date and time as desired. You can also disable the timestamp for future images that will be taken with your camcorder. Auto Power Off Menu You can use the Auto Power Off feature in order to conserve you camcorder s battery life. The designated time represents when your camcorder will automatically power off. 30 Frequency Menu The options in the Frequency menu represent the frequency of the electrical current in fluorescent lighting sources in your locale. 31 Format Memory Card Menu You can use the Format Memory Card menu to delete all of the content that is currently on your camcorder s memory card. Keep in mind that formatting the memory card will permanently delete all of the content on your camcorder s memory card. This option will delete all of the content at one time. If you would like to delete individual images, use the Delete menu in the camcorder s Playback mode. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Format Memory Card menu. 3) Format? is automatically highlighted. To continue to the next step of the Format option, press the OK button. You will be asked to confirm the formatting of the memory card. Select No and press the OK button to exit without formatting. Select Yes and press the OK button to automatically begin the format. The memory card will be completely formatted. Factory Default Settings Menu Use this menu to reset your camcorder settings to the Factory Default Settings. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Firmware menu. 3) The Default Setting is selected. 4) Press the OK button to reset the camcorder to the factory default settings. 5) You will be asked to confirm the resetting to the factory default settings. Select No and press the OK button to exit the menu and return to the previous mode without resetting to the default settings. Select Yes and press the OK button to proceed with the reset. You will then automatically exit the menu and return to the previous mode with the digital camcorder settings set to the Factory Default Settings. Note: After RESETTING to the default settings, it is recommended to select your system Language, Date/Time and ViviLink for Photos and Videos. If you do not, the next time your camera is powered on, you will be prompted to define those settings. 30

32 Video Playback Mode The Playback Mode allows you to review and edit photos and videos that you ve already taken with you camcorder. When you first turn on the camcorder, the camcorder will be in Video Capture mode by default. Press the Playback button to open the Playback Mode. The latest captured image (video or photo) appears on the LCD screen. If there are no images stored, a message (No File) appears. To quickly access the Delete menu while in Playback Mode, press the DV button. To exit the Playback Mode and return to capture mode press the Playback button again. PLAYING VIDEOS ON YOUR CAMCORDER Select Your Video Once in Playback mode, view each of your captured images (videos and photos). Videos appear with an AVI icon on the top left of the LCD screen. Photos appear with a JPG icon on the top left of the LCD screen. - Press the RIGHT button to view the next image (video or photo). - Press the LEFT button to view the previous image (video or photo). Scroll through the images to select the video you would like to view. Play Your Selected Video: START: Press the UP button to start playing the video. While the video is playing all the icons on the top section of the LCD disappear. PAUSE: Press the UP button again to pause the video and to continue playing and pausing as needed. STOP: Press the DV button to fully stop the playing video. 31

33 THUMBNAIL VIEW Easily navigate and select the image you wish to view by using the Thumbnail View. The images on your camcorder will be displayed in a 3 X 3 matrix where you can use the direction buttons to scroll and select images from the thumbnails. 1) Press the Playback button to enter the Playback mode. 2) Press the DOWN button to open the Thumbnail View. All the images on your camcorder, both videos and photos, appear in the Thumbnail View. Video thumbnails appear with a video icon. Photo thumbnails appear without an icon. 3) Press the UP / DOWN / LEFT / RIGHT buttons to scroll and select the image you wish to view. 4) Press the OK button to enlarge the selected image full size. 5) Once the selected video is full size you can play and view the video. VIDEO PLAYBACK MODE MENUS The following are the menus that appear in your digital video camera s Video Playback Mode: Delete Menu While in the Playback mode, you can delete images (both videos and photos) from your digital video camera through the Delete menu. 1) Select the image you would like to delete. 2) Press the OK button to open the menus for the current mode. 3) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Delete menu. 4) Press the UP or DOWN button to scroll through the menu options. 5) The following are the Delete options: One : Allows you to delete the selected image. Select One and then press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and delete the image or No to return to the menu without deleting. 32

34 All : Allows you to delete all the images (including all unlocked photos and videos) on your camcorder s memory card. Select All and the press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and delete all images or No to return to the menu without deleting. Note: To exit at any time without deleting press the DC/DV button. Caution: Deleting your images is a process that is irreversible and the images will be lost permanently if they are not downloaded to the computer before deletion. Remember: You can quickly access the Delete menu while viewing your images in either Thumbnail view or full screen view by pressing the DV button. Lock Menu Videos and photos taken with your camcorder can be protected or locked to prevent any deletion or alteration being made to the files. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Lock menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN to scroll through the menu options. 4) The following are the Lock options: Lock/Unlock One : Allows you to lock or unlock the selected image. Select Lock/Unlock One and then press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and lock or unlock the image or No to return to the menu. Lock All : Allows you to lock all the images (all photos and videos) on your camcorder s memory card. Select Lock All and the press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and lock all images or No to return to the menu without locking. Note: Locked images cannot be deleted. 33

35 Unlock All : Allows you to unlock all the locked images. Select Unlock All and the press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and unlock all images or No to return to the menu without unlocking. Note: To exit the menu at any time without locking/unlocking press the DC/DV button. 5) Any image that is locked will display a lock symbol on the LCD screen when viewing that image in the Playback mode. Images that are not locked will not display the lock symbol. Remember that you cannot delete locked images. ViviLink for Videos Menu The ViviLink technology allows you to quickly and easily upload your camcorder s photos and videos to the social networks of your choice with the accompanying Vivitar Experience Image Manager application. 1) View the video to which you would like to add a ViviLink destination site. 2) Press the OK button to open the menus for the current mode. 3) Press the LEFT or RIGHT direction control button to scroll and select the ViviLink for Videos menu. 4) Press the UP or DOWN direction control button to scroll through the menu options. 5) Press the OK button to select and save the desired option. 6) A selected option icon will appear on the selected item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon will appear on the image with the selected ViviLink destination site. Note: The ViviLink feature is deactivated by default. A ViviLink destination will only be assigned to a photo or video if you manually set it from this menu or from the ViviLink menu in Capture mode (easily accessible with the ViviLink LEFT Quick-Function button in Capture mode). Changing the ViviLink destination site will also make the selected site the new default ViviLink option. A new default can be selected at any time through this menu. 34

36 Photo Capture Mode The Photo Capture mode allows you to capture pictures with your digital camcorder. After powering on the camcorder, press the DC (Photo) button to open the Photo Capture Mode. TAKING A PICTURE 1) While in Photo Capture mode, use the LCD display to direct the camcorder at the scene you would like to capture. 2) You can magnify your subject up to 4 times using the digital zoom while capturing your photos and recording your videos. Press the UP (Zoom In) or DOWN (Zoom Out) button to zoom in and out. The following Digital Zoom Indicator appears on the right side of the LCD screen: The zoom indicating bar moves up when you Zoom In and moves down when you Zoom Out. The current zoom magnification appears below the Digital Zoom Indicator as you zoom. 3) Press the DC/Shutter button to capture your photo. 4) The picture is automatically saved to the camcorder s SD memory card. TAKING A SELF PORTRAIT PICTURE You can also capture your photos using the Flip Screen and quickly include yourself in the photo. 1) When you would like to quickly include yourself in the photo, simply flip open the LCD panel and then twist downward until it flips and turns ) Hold the camera steady facing towards you at arm s length (30~45cm). 3) Make sure you can see yourself on the LCD screen. 4) Look at the camera lens, and then press the DC/Shutter button to take the picture. It s as easy as twist and shoot! 35

This is an optimal feature if you don t just want to take the picture but would also like to be in the picture yourself. Face Detect Menu The Face Detect feature when set to On allows the camera to use a subject s face as the basis for balancing the other colors and focus in the camera s display. This feature is meant to ensure that the color and focus of your pictures will be consistently sharp and high-quality. Note: To properly use the Face Detect option, please ensure the following: Anti-Shake - Ensure that the Anti-Shake option is set to On. The Anti-Shake option is On by default when you start using your camera and assists you in properly focusing the image. Distance from the camera The subject s face must be no further than 8 to 9 feet (3.5 meters) from the camera and the face must cover at least 20% (1 / 5th) of the picture as previewed on the LCD screen. Facing the camera - The face of the subject(s) you are photographing must be facing the camera and must hold the pose for at least 4 to 5 seconds until the green square(s) appears around the subject s face. Face Detect will not work with a side shot of the subject s head. 2) Press the LEFT or button to scroll and select the Face Detect menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 40

The Anti-Shake option is On by default when you start using your camera and assists you in properly focusing the image. Distance from the camera The subject s face must cover a majority of the picture as previewed on the LCD screen. Facing the camera - The face of the subject(s) you are photographing must be facing the camera and must hold the pose for at least 4 to 5 seconds until the green square(s) appears around the subject s face. Once a smile is detected the camera will automatically take the picture. This setting should be adjusted when the environment is lighter or darker than normal. When the environment has more light than is needed, reduce the exposure setting (by using the negative - count) to reduce the amount of light allowed into the lens by your camcorder. Date/Time Menu When you capture an image with your camcorder, the image will include a time stamp with the date and time that the image was taken. The Date/Time menu allows you to set your camcorder s date and time as desired. You can also disable the timestamp for future images that will be taken with your camcorder. On The timestamp will appear on photos taken Off The date stamp will not appear on photos taken To Enable/Disable the Timestamp: 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Date/Time menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DC button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. 46

48 To Set the Date and Time: 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT to scroll and select the Date/Time menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the Date Setup menu option, and then press the OK button to open the menu. 4) Scroll through the date and time menus with the RIGHT and LEFT buttons. 5) For each field in the menu, use the UP and DOWN buttons to set the specific date and time. 6) When you have finished setting the date and time, press the OK button to save your settings and return to the previous mode. 7) Press the DC button to exit the menu without saving your settings and return to your previous screen. Silent Mode Menu You have the option of activating the camera s Silent mode to disable all of the sound effects (except for beeps heard during the Self-Timer countdown) that the camera emits when performing camera functions. Note: The camera features that emit sounds include - Power On, Power Off, Shutter Click, Self-Timer countdown, Menu navigation and selection Click. The Silent Mode Options include: Silent Mode Off (default): All camcorder features will emit sound when activated. Silent Mode On: All camcorder features will not emit sound. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Silent Mode menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DC button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. 47

49 Auto Power Off Menu You can use the Auto Power Off feature in order to conserve you camcorder s battery life. The designated time represents when your camcorder will automatically power off. When the camcorder sits idle for the designated period of time, the camcorder will shut off completely and will need to be turned on again with the power button before the next use. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Auto Power Off menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DC button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. Frequency Menu The options in the Frequency menu represent the frequency of the electrical current in fluorescent lighting sources in your locale. If your camcorder is set to a frequency that does not match your country s electric current, you may see flickering or waves on the images taken by your camcorder. 50Hz UK, Europe and Australia 60Hz US, Canada and South America 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Frequency menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DC button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. 48

50 TV Out Menu TV Out allows you to select the TV option appropriate for you to view your captured images on your television. See Connecting the Camcorder to a TV for further information on how to connect your digital video camera to your television. NTSC television and video standard used in America, Canada PAL television and video standard used in Europe 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the TV Out menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 6) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to select the next menu item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) Remember that this setting will be saved by your camcorder until you manually change the setting or restore the camcorder s default factory settings. Format Memory Card Menu You can use the Format Memory Card menu to delete all of the content that is currently on your camcorder s memory card. Keep in mind that formatting the memory card will permanently delete all of the content on your camcorder s memory card. This option will delete all of the content at one time. If you would like to delete individual images, use the Delete menu in the camcorder s Playback mode. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Format Memory Card menu. 3) Format? is automatically highlighted. To continue to the next step of the Format option, press the OK button. You will be asked to confirm the formatting of the memory card. Select No and press the OK button to exit without formatting. Select Yes and press the OK button to automatically begin the format. The memory card will be completely formatted. 49

51 Factory Default Settings Menu Use this menu to reset your camcorder settings to the Factory Default Settings. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Firmware menu. 3) The Default Setting is selected. 4) Press the OK button to reset the camcorder to the factory default settings. 5) You will be asked to confirm the resetting to the factory default settings. Select No and press the OK button to exit the menu and return to the previous mode without resetting to the default settings. Select Yes and press the OK button to proceed with the reset. You will then automatically exit the menu and return to the previous mode with the digital camcorder settings set to the Factory Default Settings. Note: After RESETTING to the default settings, it is recommended to select your system Language, Date/Time and ViviLink for Photos and Videos. If you do not, the next time your camera is powered on, you will be prompted to define those settings. 50

52 Photo Playback Mode The Playback Mode allows you to review and edit photos and videos that you ve already taken with you camcorder. When you first turn on the camcorder, the camcorder will be in Video Capture mode by default. Press the Playback button to open the Playback Mode. The latest captured image (video or photo) appears on the LCD screen. If there are no images stored, a message (No File) appears. To quickly access the Delete menu while in Playback Mode, press the DV button. To exit the Playback Mode and return to capture mode press the Playback button again. VIEWING PHOTOS ON YOUR CAMCORDER Select your Photo: Once in Playback mode, view each of your captured images (videos and photos). Videos appear with an AVI icon on the top left of the LCD screen. Photos appear with a JPG icon on the top left of the LCD screen. - Press the RIGHT button to view the next image (video or photo). - Press the LEFT button to view the previous image (video or photo). Scroll through the images to select the photo you would like to view. Zooming In/Out of Your Selected Photo: Zoom In: Press the UP/Zoom In button to Zoom In and magnify the selected photo. Zoom Out: Press the DOWN/Zoom Out button to Zoom Out of the selected photo. Navigate the Zoomed Photo: Press the OK button view the photo without icons and navigate around the photo. Use the UP / DOWN / LEFT / RIGHT direction buttons to navigate around the magnified photo. Press the Playback button to return to viewing the photo without magnification. 51

53 THUMBNAIL VIEW Easily navigate and select the image you wish to view by using the Thumbnail View. The images on your camcorder will be displayed in a 3 X 3 matrix where you can use the direction buttons to scroll and select images from the thumbnails. 1) Press the Playback button to enter the Playback mode. 2) Press the DOWN button to open the Thumbnail View. All the images on your camcorder, both videos and photos, appear in the Thumbnail View. Video thumbnails appear with a video icon. Photo thumbnails appear without an icon. 3) Press the UP / DOWN / LEFT / RIGHT buttons to scroll and select the image you wish to view. 4) Press the OK button to enlarge the selected image full size. 5) Once the selected photo is full size you can Zoom In or Zoom Out of the selected photo. PHOTO PLAYBACK MODE MENUS The following are the menus that appear in your digital video camera s Photo Playback Mode: Delete Menu While in the Playback mode, you can delete images (both videos and photos) from your digital video camera through the Delete menu. 1) Select the image you would like to delete. 2) Press the OK button to open the menus for the current mode. 3) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Delete menu. 52

54 4) Press the UP or DOWN button to scroll through the menu options. 5) The following are the Delete options: One : Allows you to delete the selected image. Select One and then press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and delete the image or No to return to the menu without deleting. All : Allows you to delete all the images (including all unlocked photos and videos) on your camcorder s memory card. Select All and the press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and delete all images or No to return to the menu without deleting. Note: To exit at any time without deleting press the DC/DV button. Caution: Deleting your images is a process that is irreversible and the images will be lost permanently if they are not downloaded to the computer before deletion. Remember: You can quickly access the Delete menu while viewing your images in either Thumbnail view or full screen view by pressing the DV button. Rotate Menu Use the Rotate menu to rotate the pictures that you ve taken with your camcorder. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Rotate menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight the desired menu selection. 4) Press the OK button to confirm and select the highlighted menu option. 5) The selected picture now appears rotated in the Playback mode (full screen mode) saved as a separate photo. 53

55 Lock Menu Videos and photos taken with your camcorder can be protected or locked to prevent any deletion or alteration being made to the files. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Lock menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN to scroll through the menu options. 4) The following are the Lock options: Lock/Unlock One : Allows you to lock or unlock the selected image. Select Lock/Unlock One and then press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and lock or unlock the image or No to return to the menu. Lock All : Allows you to lock all the images (all photos and videos) on your camcorder s memory card. Select Lock All and the press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and lock all images or No to return to the menu without locking. Note: Locked images cannot be deleted. Unlock All : Allows you to unlock all the locked images. Select Unlock All and the press the OK button. You will be asked to reconfirm your selection. Select Yes to confirm and unlock all images or No to return to the menu without unlocking. Note: To exit the menu at any time without locking/unlocking press the DC/DV button. 5) Any image that is locked will display a lock symbol on the LCD screen when viewing that image in the Playback mode. Images that are not locked will not display the lock symbol. Remember that you cannot delete locked images. 54

56 Print Photos Menu You can use the Print Photos menu to print the photos that are on your camcorder directly to a Pictbridge compatible printer. 1) Scroll through your pictures and select an image you would like to print. 2) Press the OK button to open the menus for the current mode. 3) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Print Photos menu. 4) Press the OK button when highlighting the Print This Photo option to print the selected photo. 5) You will be asked to connect the camcorder to the Pictbridge printer. 6) Connect the USB/AV cable provided in the package from the camcorder to the Pictbridge port of the printer. 7) Once connected, follow the instructions on the printer to proceed with the printing process. Slide Show Menu The Slide Show menu allows you view your captured images as a Slide Show and to set the interval length of time that each picture will display during the Slide Show. 2) Press the LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll and select the Slide Show menu. 3) Press the UP or DOWN button to scroll through the menu options and select a time interval. 4) Press the OK button to select and save the desired option. 6) Select Play and press the OK button. The Slide Show will begin to play. To Pause: press the UP button. To Stop: press the DC/Shutter button. ViviLink for Photos Menu The ViviLink technology allows you to quickly and easily upload your camcorder s photos and videos to the social networks of your choice with the accompanying Vivitar Experience Image Manager application. 1) View the photo to which you would like to add a ViviLink destination site. 2) Press the OK button to open the menus for the current mode. 3) Press the LEFT or RIGHT direction control button to scroll and select the ViviLink for Photos 55

57 menu. 4) Press the UP or DOWN direction control button to scroll through the menu options. 5) Press the OK button to select and save the desired option. 6) A selected option icon will appear on the selected item. 7) Press the DV button to exit the menu and return to your previous mode. 8) An icon will appear on the image with the selected ViviLink destination site. Note: The ViviLink feature is deactivated by default. A ViviLink destination will only be assigned to a photo or video if you manually set it from this menu or from the ViviLink menu in Capture mode (easily accessible with the ViviLink LEFT Quick-Function button in Capture mode). Changing the ViviLink destination site will also make the selected site the new default ViviLink option. A new default can be selected at any time through this menu. Connecting the Camcorder to a TV You can use the TV screen in place of the camcorder s LCD screen. On connecting the USB/TV-out cable (supplied) the LCD screen will turn blank. Use the camcorder as you would to capture and playback photos and videos. The images will appear on the TV instead of on the LCD screen. Note: The only limitation of using the TV screen is that the camcorder is now not portable. The camcorder will continue to consume battery power. 1) Connect the camcorder to a TV via the TV-out cable (supplied): Connect the small black side of the USB/AV cable into the camcorder s USB slot. Connect the yellow jack into the TV Video port. Connect the white jack into the TV Audio port. 2) Turn On the TV and the digital camcorder, and then set the TV to AV mode. 3) Set the TV format on the camcorder to suit the TV format of your TV set (NTSC or PAL). In the Camcorder Setup Menus, use the TV Out Menu to select the appropriate TV format. 4) When the camcorder is set to Video or Photo Capture Mode, you can preview what you would like to record on the TV screen and view the scene as you are recording on the TV. 5) When the camcorder is set to Playback mode, you can view all the captured photos and videos on the TV. 56

58 Installing the Software You must be connected to the Internet to install and run the Vivitar Experience Image Manager Software. 1) Insert the installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. The installation screen should automatically open. 2) On PC: The Vivitar Experience Image Manager Installer window appears. If the window does not appear, open the application s CD/DVD drive and click on Setup.exe to launch the installer. 3) On Macintosh: Click the icon that appears on the desktop to install the Vivitar Experience Image Manager. 4) If you do not have internet access at the time of inserting the CD-ROM, connect to the internet and then click the Install Vivitar Experience Image Manager button to begin the installation. Note: If you do not have internet access, you can still download media from the camcorder. Click the How to transfer photos and videos from my camcorder to my computer button for instructions. 57

59 5) If you have internet access, the Choose your language window opens, choose your language and click Next to open the next window. 6) Select your camera model from the list and click Next to open the next window. 7) Click Next to confirm your camera model selection and to install the application. 8) Please wait while the application is being installed on your computer. 9) Please review the license terms. On PC and Macintosh: Click the I accept the terms of this license agreement and then click Next to continue. 10) On PC only: Let the Vivitar Experience Image Manager installer create the folder to where the program will be installed, and then click Install. 11) Please wait while the application continues the installation process on your computer. On Macintosh: If needed, please follow instructions to install the Adobe Flash Player. 12) On PC: Click the Close button when the installation is complete. The application will automatically open. 13) On Macintosh: Click the Quit button when the installation is complete. Click the Launch Vivitar Experience Image Manager to open the application 14) If you close the application you can run the Vivitar Experience Image Manager from the Programs (PC) or Application (Mac) menu on your computer. Connecting the Camcorder to the Computer 1) Use the USB/AV cable that came with your camcorder to connect your camcorder to your computer. 2) Power the camcorder on. 3) The first time you connect the device to the computer you may have to wait a few seconds until the computer recognizes the device. 58

60 Getting Photos and Videos from the Camcorder to the Computer An SD card needs to be inserted in your camcorder and your camcorder must be connected to your computer. Do not disconnect the USB/AV cable during transfer. Doing so will cancel the transfer of any files on their way to your computer. 1) Select the Get Images button from the Main menu. 2) The Get media from device window opens. 3) You can select to download photos, videos or both. 4) Select your camcorder (removable disk) from the device window. If your camcorder is the only USB device connected then it will be selected automatically. 5) Select a location on the computer where to place the new photo and video files. 6) Add the new photo and video files to albums if desired. 7) Select to remove the media files from the selected device (removable disk) after the import. 8) Click the Get Media button to transfer the photos and videos from your camcorder to your computer. 9) A media download progress bar appears on the bottom left showing the number of media files downloading to your computer. A message appears when the download is complete. 10) The photo and video files that you selected are now downloaded to your computer to the selected folder and albums ready for your use. 59
