Phoenix Lens Phoenix Lens with XM1 Attachment Kit (shown in gray) Phoenix Lens with XMU Attachment Kit (shown in gray) PHOENIX LENS USER GUIDE Version 1.2 The Phoenix lens represent the latest generation in patented anamorphic optical solutions to engage the anamorphic modes currently available in all popular home theater projectors for dramatically increasing the clarity, detail and brightness of UltraWide movies and even for filling UltraWide screens with non-ultrawide content with the highest performance. GENERAL GUIDELINES AND SPECIFICATIONS Projector location. The Phoenix Lens is specifically designed to be used upright (supported by its Lens Bracket) with a projector vertically positioned at or below the center of the projection screen, OR, used inverted (hanging from its Lens Bracket) with a projector vertically positioned at or above the center of the screen. The projector should be horizontally positioned at the center of the screen with very little or no horizontal keystone adjustment. Projector distance to screen. The projector should be located within the specified throw distance range of the Phoenix Lens (14 19 or 4.3m 5.8m). Distances outside this range will gradually become more difficult to focus. Maximum screen size. The vertical dimension of your screen should ideally be less than the projector throw distance divided by 3.5. Screens larger than this will cause increasingly greater distortion and possibly color fringing beyond the capability of ECC projectors. Generally, a higher ratio of projector distance to screen size provides better results. A ratio of less than 3.0 may still be acceptable but is not recommended. Page 1
Screen aspect ratio. The width-to-height ratio (ie aspect ratio) of the screen should be 2.4:1. A screen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 will still properly frame most movies but with a slightly greater amount of image projected onto the border. The screen border should be approximately 3.5 (90mm) wide to work with variations in actual movie aspect ratios. Electronic Convergence Correction. The Phoenix Lens is designed to use Electronic Convergence Correction (ECC) currently provided in home theater projectors manufactured by Epson, JVC and Sony. Without ECC the image will show color fringing which increases toward the sides of the image. Newer projector models and possibly other components such as Blu-ray players or external processors may offer ECC in the future. For updates as well as a list of older model projectors offering ECC please check for compatibility on the Panamorph Lens-Options webpage and refer to your projector user manual. Note that while some people find uncorrected color fringing difficult see, ECC is highly recommended for best performance. Anamorphic Modes. The dramatic increase in performance offered by the Phoenix Lens requires that your projector (or other device) must provide the anamorphic modes. Panamorph has worked with every popular home theater projector manufacturer to include these modes. However, please check with your projector user manual to confirm this and to learn how to access the modes using your projector s remote control. While these anamorphic modes may have different names, Mode 1 typically provides a vertical stretch of an image by 33% while Mode 2 typically provides a horizontal squeeze of an image by 25%. You can check with the Panamorph Lens- Options webpage for anamorphic mode names used by compatible projector brands. USING ANAMORPHIC MODES WITH YOUR PROJECTOR After the Phoenix Lens is installed you can use your projector remote to engage the projector s two anamorphic modes or turn them off to provide the following options. CONTENT MODE RESULT UltraWide movies MODE 1 Content completely fills the UltraWide screen. 100% projector performance used. Made-for-HDTV content and movies with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. MODE 1 MODE 2 OFF Content completely fills the UltraWide Screen but 12.5% is cut off from both top and bottom of non-ultrawide content. 100% projector performance used. Content is projected onto the horizontal center of the screen with black pillars on the left and right. 1.85:1 movies may have black sliver at top and bottom. 75% projector performance used. Content fills the UltraWide screen with nothing cut off but image appears horizontally stretched. 1.85:1 movies may have black sliver at top and bottom. 96%-100% of projector performance used. Page 2
BEFORE LENS INSTALLATION A Lens Bracket is provided with the Phoenix Lens for mounting it either inverted if the projector is located above the screen center (typically ceiling-mounted) or mounting the lens upright if the projector is located below the screen center (typically table-mounted). Please review the Installing the Phoenix Lens section below to be familiar with the installation steps if you are contemplating your own table, shelf or ceiling mount solution. Remember, if your projector is vertically positioned below the screen center then you ll need to provide a structure such as a table or shelf below the projector lens for positioning the Lens Bracket in an upright orientation. Conversely, if the projector is vertically positioned above the screen center, such as when using a ceiling-mount, then you ll need to provide a structure above the projector lens for mounting the Lens Bracket in an inverted orientation. You do not need to create such a ceiling-mount structure if you are using the optional XM1 or XMU Attachment Kits. Please refer to Appendix A and B for instructions to install these kits prior to the following Phoenix Lens installation steps. SPECIAL NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLING THE PHOENIX LENS, make the necessary adjustments to your projection system so that a 16:9 test image such as a test pattern is horizontally centered on your UltraWide projection screen using little or no horizontal lens shift or keystone adjustment and so the top and bottom edges of the image are parallel with the top and bottom edges of the screen. In preparation for setting up the Phoenix Lens, slightly zoom the image down (with added vertical lens shift as needed) so you can see the top and bottom edges of the test image on the screen rather than on the border. INSTALLING THE PHOENIX LENS 1. Locate and remove the Lens Bracket from the Phoenix Lens by removing the four Bracket Screws (see illustration below). At this time the Lens Bracket can be mounted in an inverted orientation (as in the illustration) to a self-made structure above the projector lens of a ceiling-mounted projector or it can be mounted in an upright orientation onto a shelf or table below the projector lens of a table-mounted projector. Alternatively, IF USING THE XM1 OR XMU ATTACHMENT KITS: Insert the two 5/8 long Bracket Attachment Screws up through the Phoenix Bracket and tighten using the included Hex Key. OPTIONAL FOR LARGER PROJECTORS SUCH AS SONY 4K UNITS: Instead of the 5/8 long screws, use the 1 5/8 long Bracket Attachment Screws with the 1 Bracket Attachment Spacers if you determine or desire that the Phoenix Lens should extend farther from the XM1 Plate to properly position in the projector beam. Page 3
2. Attach the Phoenix Lens to the Lens Bracket by inserting the four #8-32 Bracket Screws (included with the Phoenix Lens) through the Lens Bracket heightadjustment ratchet slots and into the Bracket Arms. Note that the lens has a protective film over the front. Please leave this film on for now. 3. IF USING THE XM1 OR XMU ATTACHMENT KITS. Attach the Lens Bracket (with Phoenix Lens attached) to the XM1 or XMU Attachment Plate by inserting the Bracket Attachment Screws (now in the Lens Bracket) up through the XM1 Plate slotted holes or the XMU slot and secure using the two Thumb Knobs. NOTE: If the longer 1 5/8 Bracket Attachment Screws are used then the 1 Bracket Attachment Spacer should be between the Lens Bracket and the XM1 or XMU Attachment Plate. If using the XMU Attachment Kit, loosen the Thumb Knobs and slide the Lens Bracket in the Attachment Plate slot to horizontally position the Phoenix Lens in front of the projector lens before retightening the Thumb Knobs. 4. Turn on the projector and project some type of full test image such as a test pattern so you can see the beam passing through the Phoenix lens. Adjust the height of the Phoenix Lens by slightly loosening the Bracket Screws and then tilting and vertically moving the Phoenix Lens to an appropriate notch in the ratchet slots where it can settle with the Bracket Arms parallel to the sides of the Lens Bracket. Adjust the tilt of the lens by slightly loosening the two Lens Tilt screws connecting the Bracket Arms to the Phoenix Lens so that it pivots about the front screw. With these operations in mind, adjust both the height AND tilt so that the front of the Phoenix Page 4
Lens is approximately facing the vertical center of the screen AND so the projector beam is approximately vertically centered both at the entrance and exit of the lens. Once this adjustment is made, tighten the Bracket Screws. 5. Remove the Phoenix lens front protective film and adjust the projector focus if needed. Make final adjustments to the Phoenix Lens tilt so that there is a similar but opposite amount of curvature (this may be slight) at the top and bottom of the image then tighten the two Lens Tilt screws on both sides of the lens to lock in the tilt. 6. Slightly loosen the two Thumb Knobs (or loosen any connection between the Lens Bracket and any self-made support structure) and pivot the Lens Bracket about the vertical axis to horizontally center the image on the screen while also sliding the Lens Bracket toward the projector to minimize the distance between the Phoenix Lens and projector lens. This distance is not critical but minimization somewhat helps to minimize dust accumulation and stray light. IF USING THE XMU ATTACHMENT KIT: Slightly loosen the RPA ceiling mount head or OMNImount adapter screws just enough so that the XMU Attachment Plate can be slid back to minimize the distance between the Phoenix Lens and projector lens. When the Phoenix Lens is properly oriented in front of the projector lens and the image is centered on the screen, retighten the same screws. FOR ALL MOUNTING SOLUTIONS: Secure the Lens Bracket attachment to any self-made support structure or tighten the two Thumb Knobs to lock everything in place. 7. Geometry troubleshooting. The Phoenix Lens is now physically installed. If there is any rotation or skew to the UltraWide image that was not in the 16:9 image before the Phoenix Lens was installed then please check to make sure the XM1 or XMU Page 5
Attachment Plate, Lens Bracket and any self-made support structures are holding the lens level relative to the projector. 8. Electronic Convergence Correction setup. The Phoenix Lens relies on ECC currently available in Sony, Epson and JVC projectors to compensate for correcting light being split or misconverged into multiple colors, otherwise known as color fringing. This color fringing is not very visible toward the center of the image but increases toward the right and left edges. Not everybody finds the misconvergence significant from normal seating distances with most content. However, correction is still highly recommended for best performance. These adjustments can take anywhere from approximately 5 to 30 minutes depending on the projector model and level of desired correction. Note that these adjustments are performed only once during lens setup and can be turned off and then back on to your settings through the projector menu. ECC involves projecting a test grid of lines then individually adjusting the blue and red line image in all screen areas so they are each aligned with the green lines. Although ECC is required only in the horizontal direction for the Phoenix Lens, you may wish to remove any visible vertical color fringing due to misalignments int the projector itself at this time. Please refer to the appropriate sections of your projector s user manual for details on making these adjustments. Here are some brief notes to access the menu options for ECC: Epson: Menu -> Extended -> Panel Alignment. See the user manual for more detailed discussion regarding Adjusting the Color Convergence. The first step of Epson s ECC allows you to adjust the four image corners to impact the entire image. This very quickly implements ECC for the Phoenix Lens but you may still wish to continue with finer adjustments per the manual. JVC: Menu -> Installation -> Pixel Adjust. Please refer to the Zone Adjust Operation Procedure in the user manual. Sony: Menu -> Installation -> Panel Alignment. Please refer to the section on Panel Alignment -> Zone in the user manual. 9. Final image adjustment. Adjust your projector s zoom settings so that the entire left and right edges of the test image project just slightly over the screen border. If later a movie is played and a slight gap is noticed between the movie and screen at the top and bottom then simply zoom up the image a bit more to fill the gap. This can occur especially if the screen has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 instead of 2.4:1. Make fine adjustments to the vertical lens shift to fill the gap while keeping the image vertically centered. After this final adjustment all content having an aspect ratio of 2.4:1 and lower will always completely fill the screen when Anamorphic Mode 1 is engaged. Page 6
CLEANING In most applications lenses do not need very much cleaning a bit of dust will not significantly impact image clarity. However, in today s high performance home cinemas with very dark rooms a small build-up of dust or other foreign matter on your projector lens or your Panamorph lens can produce a noticeable reduction in contrast. The most effective cleaning approach is to simply blow off any dust. If there is any residue or build-up then it is recommended that you clean the optics with professional lens cleaning supplies such as from a camera store while the lens is in front of the lit beam of the projector. This will allow you to quickly see both the results of cleaning and also if you are causing any damage. 8 Appendix A INSTALLING THE OPTIONAL XM1 ATTACHMENT KIT The XM1 attachment kit is designed to easily attach the Phoenix lens to the projector models shown below and is also compatible with all ceiling mounts for these projectors which may be used after the XM1 is installed. Epson and JVC models include specific mounting holes for the Phoenix Lens and Sony projectors use the ceiling mounting holes themselves to either attach the XM1 directly or to sandwich the XM1 plate between the projector and ceiling mount. If your projector model is not shown please contact Panamorph and/or check the Panamorph Lens-Options webpage. 5020UB (no anamorphic modes), 5030UB (no anamorphic modes), 6020UB, 6030UB JVC Reference Series RS50, RS55, RS60, RS65, RS56,RS49, RS4910, RS57, RS67, RS6710, RS400, RS500, RS600 JVC Procision X35, X50, X55, X70, X75, X90, X95, X500, X550, X700, X750, X900, X950 VPL- HW40ES, VW50ES, HW55ES VPL- VW300ES, VW350ES, VW500ES, VW600ES, VW1000ES, VW1100ES (anamorphic modes only for HD inputs on 4K models) CONTENTS 1 XM1 Plate with these instructions 1 XM1 Parts kit (2) Screw, Bracket Attachment ¼ -20 x 5/8, black (2) Screw, Bracket Attachment (long) ¼ -20 x 1 5/8, black (2) Screw, Epson/JVC Plate Attachment M4x20mm, silver (3) Screw, Sony Plate Attachment M5x30mm, silver (2) Screw, Stabilizer #6-32, ½ black plastic (2) Spacer, Bracket Attachment ¾ D x 1 long, black (2) Spacer, Epson ½ OD, 3/16 long, black (3) Spacer, Sony ½ OD, 3/8 long, black (2) Washer, Epson/JVC Plate Attachment M4, silver (2) Thumb Knob, Bracket Attachment (1) Hex Key, Bracket Attachment Page 8
ATTACHING THE XM1 PLATE 1. Lay the XM1 Plate over the inverted projector to identify the mounting holes according to the larger text designations in the following diagram. For Sony projectors make sure the plate is positioned up as shown so the Lens Bracket mounting holes will center the Lens Bracket over the projector lens. E J S1 S2 S3 Epson projectors JVC projectors Sony VPL- HW40ES, HW50ES, HW55ES Sony VPL- VW300ES, VW350ES, VW500ES, VW600ES Sony VPL- VW1000ES, VW1100ES 2. For Sony and Epson projectors, set the XM1 Plate aside and place either the three Sony 3/8 long spacers or two Epson 3/16 spacers over the respective mounting holes of those projectors (no spacers required for JVC). 3. Replace the XM1 Plate over the inverted projector and align with the mounting holes without disturbing the spacers. If you are using a ceiling mount with a Sony projector, place the ceiling mount adapter over the XM1 Plate and again align with the projector mounting holes. 4. Insert and tighten the appropriate Plate Attachment Screws (with silver washers for JVC or Epson projectors) through the XM1 Plate and into the projector. CAUTION: IF THE PLATE ATTACHMENT SCREWS DO NOT FULLY THREAD INTO THE PROJECTOR DO NOT FORCE THEM. In this case you may need to either use shorter screws or add washers. 5. For installations where the projector will be inverted (ie most of them), insert the two plastic stabilizer screws through the XM1 Plate in the diagram locations shown with smaller letters until they make contact with projector. These stabilizer screws do not need to be tightened. Return to the main instructions titled BEFORE LENS INSTALLATION. Page 9
Appendix B INSTALLING THE OPTIONAL XMU ATTACHMENT KIT The XMU attachment kit is designed to position the Phoenix lens in front of the primary lens of most projectors which have already been ceiling mounted with the Chief RPA with either the universal or SLB projector adapter (Chief parts not included) per the manufacturer s instructions and where the projector lens center is no greater than 4 (100m) to the left or right of the center of the ceiling mount pole. If you have not yet purchased a ceiling mount for your projector, the Chief RPA with SLB is generally the easiest to work with since it requires the least adjustments while installing the XMU Attachment Kit. Please note that if you are using the universal Chief projector adapter you should take care to set up the arms per the manufacturer s instructions so that the mounting pole is at or just a little in front of (ie toward the screen) the center of gravity of the projector for best balance. CONTENTS 1 XMU Plate with these instructions 1 XMU Parts kit (2) Screw, Bracket Attachment ¼ -20 x 5/8, black (2) Screw, Bracket Attachment (long) ¼ -20 x 1 5/8, black (4) Screw, Chief SLB Extension #10-24 x 1 ½ long, silver (2) Spacer, Bracket Attachment ¾ D x 1 long, black (4) Spacer, Chief SLB ½ OD, 3/8 long, black (2) Thumb Knob, Bracket Attachment (1) Hex Key, Bracket Attachment Page 10
ATTACHING THE XMU PLATE TO THE CHIEF RPA CEILING MOUNT 1. The Chief RPA ceiling mount may include either the universal Chief spider arm adapter (RPA-U) or the projector-specific Chief SLB projector adapter (shown). In most cases the XMU plate can be installed directly to a projector that has already been ceiling-mounted per the Chief instructions. However, if you use an SLB adapter that has edges which are folded up then a) remove the projector from the Chief RPA000 mount head, b) remove the SLB adapter, c) replace the four screws in the SLB adapter with the longer #10-24 x 1 ¼ steel screws provided in the XMU kit, d) place a Chief SLB Spacer (included) over each screw, then e) remount the projector to the RPA000 mount head per the Chief instructions, leaving the six Chief thumb-knobs somewhat loose but without risk to you or the equipment. Page 11
2. Loosen the six Chief thumb-knobs to provide a gap below the RPA000 mount head just large enough to insert the XMU Plate. Be careful to leave enough thread visible above the thumb-knobs to ensure that there is no risk of the projector assembly falling. 3. Determine which side of the XMU Plate will position the Lens Bracket slot so that the Lens Bracket will be positioned in front of the projector lens. Note that if the projector lens is horizontally centered on the Chief RPA mount then it will not matter which side of the XMU Plate is used. Now slide the XMU Plate from front to back into the gap created in step 2 just under the Chief RPA head so that the exposed threads of the Chief head screws line up with the Chief head screw slots in the XMU Plate. Continue sliding the XMU Plate back about ½ (12mm) beyond the rear set of three head screws. Tighten the six thumb-knobs to secure the XMU Plate for now knowing that you will be loosening them again during future steps. Return to the main instructions titled BEFORE LENS INSTALLATION. Page 12
