1 AUREOL RECESSED BEAMSHAPER OPERATION MANUAL Thank you for purchasing an Aureol Recessed BeamShaper. We have designed this luminaire to provide superior performance in design and engineering and we are confident that it will perform to your expectations for many years. This manual will provide you with information to assist you in making maximum use of your luminaire, its maintenance, and care. If you require further assistance please contact your Philips Selecon dealer: Caution! Installation is entirely at your risk. Read this manual from cover to cover before attempting installation. Do not attempt installation unless you are suitably qualified. If you do not understand a point in this manual, please contact Philips Selecon or one of its authorised distributors for advice. Don t be afraid to ask for help. Electrical Ratings The Aureol Recessed BeamShaper can be supplied with or without built-in electronic transformer. If you have a model without a built in transformer, please ensure that you use a transformer suitable for low-voltage MR16 type halogen lamps. If you have a model with built-in transformer then the maximum allowable wattages are as follows: V model: 75W maximum. 120V model: 50W maximum.!!! Isolate electrically before relamping!!! The lamp we recommend for best results (and include with your Aureol Recessed BeamShaper) is the GE Precise 50W 25 12V MR16 lamp. Step 1: What you receive The Aureol Recessed BeamShaper main body should arrive to you assembled and ready to install in the ceiling. Before you begin the installation, we suggest that you lamp up the unit while you can see what you are doing, and examine the beam shaper tilt locking action so as to understand its mechanics. It s always easier to do this on the ground than once it is up in the air. Step 2: Cutting the Ceiling Hole Size Ceiling Tile 240mm Hole The Aureol Recessed BeamShaper requires a hole in the ceiling with a diameter of 240mm. The centre of this hole must be at least 140mm away from any ceiling beams in order to allow the Aureol Recessed BeamShaper to rotate.

2 Step 3: Lamping up your Aureol Recessed BeamShaper When you first receive your Aureol Recessed BeamShaper, we suggest that you lamp it up before attempting installation, as it is easier to do so while it is on the ground. This will also teach you the technique for re-lamping once it is installed in the ceiling. The beam shaper should be at about the 45 tilt position within the main spinning for relamping. Loosen the wing-nut in the main spinning and tilt the beam shaper to the 45 position. The lamp holding area at the top of the lens-tube has 3 integrated spring clips to hold the lamp in place. Simply pull out the old lamp from between the 3 spring clips. Plug the new MR16 lamp into the lamp base, and drop it into the rear opening of the lenstube holder plate. Push it down until it engages with the 3 spring clips. Though MR16 lamps generally have a long life, re-lamping the Aureol Recessed unit is a procedure that takes some practice, so we suggest that you familiarise yourself with the required technique. Step 4: Mounting the Recessed BeamShaper into the ceiling The Inner Spinning Insert the inner spinning through the hole in the ceiling. The inner spinning has two flat sides, which will allow the spinning to fit through the hole in the ceiling. Once it is in the ceiling, lay the spinning flat on the inside of the ceiling, as shown, with the hole in the spinning concentric to the hole in the ceiling. Wiring Up A terminal block is supplied at the top of the Aureol Recessed BeamShaper for mains wiring or 12V wiring for the Aureol Recessed with and without integral transformer respectively. If ceiling depth or local electrical regulations are a restriction this connector block can be moved to inside the transformer box and the wiring run into the transformer box via the rubber grommet at the top of the box. The Main Spinning Push the main spinning through the hole and the ceiling and the inner spinning. The main spinning is slightly tapered, so the top of the spinning is smaller than the bottom, making it easy to insert through the inner spinning. Push the spinning all the way up, until its bottom lip butts up against the ceiling. Some angled hooks on long screws are attached to the main spinning. These hooks are designed to protrude through the slots in the main spinning, and hook over the edge of the inner spinning. Once all three hooks are in place, over the edge of the inner spinning, the screws can be tightened from below to the desired tension. This tension is dependent on whether or not you wish to be able to freely rotate the recessed fitting, or whether you want it locked in place. Do not over-tighten the screws, or you run the risk of deforming the hooks, or the inner spinning.

3 Focusing The Aureol Recessed BeamShaper is fitted with an Aureol BeamShaper lens tube accessory. It will allow you to shape your beam using the shutters, or to project patterns. H A B G F C E D A: BeamShaper lid. This allows you access to the lens compartment for cleaning or for inserting patterns. B: Lid locking knob. This locks the BeamShaper lid closed. C: Shutters. Four non-removable shutters are provided to allow you to mask portions of the beam, or to frame around pictures, etc. D: Pattern slot. This slot, just forward of the shutter plates, allows you to insert either glass patterns, which fit directly into the slot, or steel patterns which get inserted in front of the supplied pattern spacer ring. E: Rear lens. F: Lens locking knobs. G: Front lens. H: Colour and accessory slots. Focusing the BeamShaper Zoom Focus The Aureol BeamShaper has two lenses that can be moved until the desired beam quality is reached. To move the lenses, simply loosen the lens locking knobs and move them into the desired position, and then tighten the locking knobs. The front lens controls the size of the beam of light (forward = small beam, backwards = large beam), and the rear lens controls the focus quality of the beam (soft edged or hard edged). Note that if the spotlight has been on for more than a few minutes, it may be hot. The four shutters can be used to mask off portions of the beam, or to frame areas, etc. Both the depth and the angle of the shutters can be controlled, allowing virtually any angle. The BeamShaper can also be rotated through 360 allowing for easy framing of non-horizontal shapes. Operating the BeamShaper Dimming If you purchased you Aureol Recessed fitting with the dimming option, a potentiometer is provided which will allow you to set the desired light level. The potentiometer shaft protrudes inside the fitting form the transformer box at the top of the main spinning. Simply turn this shaft clock-wise to turn up the light level. Inserting Patterns and Colours or Accessories 1 Pattern Spacer The Aureol BeamShaper is provided with a slot to accept patterns for projection. This slot is directly in front of the shutter plates. If you are using glass patterns, they can be inserted directly into the slot (up to a maximum thickness of 2mm). If you are using steel patterns, which are much thinner than glass patterns, you must first insert the pattern spacer into the slot (figure 1), and then slide the steel pattern in front of the pattern spacer (figure 2). Patterns to be used are E size patterns, with an outside diameter of 37.5mm, and a standard image diameter of 28mm. Note that as the Aureol BeamShaper has a gate of 32mm, the image could in actual fact be any size up to 32mm in diameter. Once the lens compartment lid has been closed, it will lock the pattern in position. Two slots are provided at the front of the BeamShaper for colour media or accessories. The rear slot will accept media such as dichroic colour filters that are up to 2.5mm thick. The front slot will accept media that is up to 4mm thick, or will take accessories such as animation discs, etc. Colour media can be 50mm round or square. If using square colour media, care should be taken not to chip the corners of the media when closing the lid. 2 Pattern

4 Safety and maintenance Maintain the Aureol BeamShaper in good condition and performing at its best by cleaning it regularly with a soft cloth. The BeamShaper lenses should only be cleaned with optical tissue paper. The above are the only maintenance tasks that can be safely carried out by non approved personnel. Selecon has manufactured this luminaire in accordance with recognised best practices to recommended international safety standards. It is your responsibility to maintain this luminaire in good and safe working condition. Repairs should only be carried out by suitably qualified persons. Do not operate the luminaire with damaged lamps or cable, etc. Consult your Selecon distributor for assistance. Only replace damaged parts with authorised Aureol spares. The Dress Ring The dress ring is the decorative facia plate that gets put into place once you have focused and adjusted your BeamShaper. Note that the bottom plate of the main spinning has three flat areas. This is where the dress ring springs should locate. Simply line up the dress ring with these flat areas (and it s opening with the lens tube), and push it into place. Three spring clips securely lock the dress ring to the main spinning, and pull it up against the ceiling. LIMITED WARRANTY Philips Selecon warrants all its architectural / display luminaires against defects in materials or workmanship. The term of this warranty is three years; from the date of delivery. Architectural / display relates to typical usage such as display lighting in a Museum viz: hrs per day, 7 days per week. This warranty is void in any of the following circumstances: (a) The luminaire has been misused, neglected, damaged or abused. (b) The luminaire has been improperly installed, operated, repaired or maintained. (c) The luminaire has been modified. (d) The luminaire has been connected to other equipment with which it is not compatible. (e) The luminaire has been used or stored in conditions outside its electrical or environmental specifications. (f) The luminaire has been used for purposes other than for which it was designed. (g) The luminaire has been used outside its stated specifications and operating parameters. Correct installation of the luminaire is the owner s responsibility. To assert a warranty claim, complete the Philips Selecon Return Athorisation Form (available from Return the luminaire to Philips Selecon or its authorised agent. If Philips Selecon accepts the warranty claim, Philips Selecon will provide, or arrange for, service, repair or replacement as Philips Selecon shall determine in its sole discretion. Philips Selecon shall bear the cost of such service, repair or replacement. However, the owner shall bear the cost of freight and insurance on the luminaire, both ways. If Philips Selecon does not wish to service, repair or replace the defective luminaire, it shall refund the purchase price. Philips Selecon s sole responsibility is to repair, replace or service a luminaire subject to a valid warranty claim. Under no circumstance will Philips Selecon be liable for direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential costs or damages, including dismantling and re-installation costs, loss of operations or profits, to the maximum extent permitted by law. Philips Selecon accepts no liability for personal injury or property damage resulting from failure to heed relevant operating and safety procedures specified by Philips Selecon or imposed by law.

5 This is an express warranty. Philips Selecon disclaims any other express or implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability or fitness for purpose, to the maximum extent permitted by law. Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations or disclaimers of implied or statutory warranties. Some jurisdictions do not allow disclaimers or exclusions of consequential or incidental damages. Therefore, the above disclaimers, limitations and exclusions may not apply in all jurisdictions in which Philips Selecon sells its luminaires. This warranty gives the owner specific legal rights. The owner may have other rights or remedies pursuant to the laws in its territory. Nothing in this limited warranty should be construed as limiting or restricting any other statutory right or remedy of the owner, except for such limitations or restrictions herein as may be allowed by the law of the territory.
