Applying Minolta's expertise in designing and manufacturing professional SLR lenses, the DiMAGE s lens is an advanced ƒ/2.8 - ƒ/3.5 apochromat zoom. It uses AD (anomalous dispersion) glass and aspheric elements to provide sharp, bright images at all focal lengths. The Minolta GT LENS ensures high-quality results for each model. The image formed on the CCD is enhanced by the exclusive Minolta CxProcess image-processing technology to optimize sharpness, color reproduction, tonal gradation, and noise to create CLEAR and EXCELLENT images which faithfully reproduce the photographer s vision. The wide dynamic range is provided by 12-bit A/D conversion to ensure natural color and tonal reproduction.

3 With a dynamic zooming range of 7X, the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 allow extensive freedom in many photographic situations. The DiMAGE 7 s zoom is equivalent to a 28mm to 200mm lens on a 35mm camera, and the DiMAGE 5 is equivalent to a 35mm to 250mm lens. Both also produce stunning macro images of small subjects. The photographer s vision is supported by the ferroelectric LCD Digital Hyper Viewfinder which displays clear full-frame, high-resolution images. The viewfinder serves as a canvas where photographers can apply various effects to control image quality. Control over the image is the strength of the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5. The Digital Effects Control gives the photographer the ability to adjust contrast, saturation, and exposure to optimize results. Many basic features found in high-quality film cameras are incorporated in the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5: multi-segment exposure metering, ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) flash metering, single frame and continuous advance modes, and manual and automatic focusing. The autofocus system s advanced wide focus area accurately measures subject distance. Minolta has also taken advantage of the new digital medium to expand on traditional photographic technology. The world s first Flex Focus Point expands focusing control by allowing the photographer to choose the position of the focus frame anywhere within the field of view. With the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5, photographers will never miss important moments. Both cameras perform quickly and effortlessly, challenging the conventional wisdom that high-resolution digital cameras are slow and clumsy. The high-speed LSI for digital imaging and signal processing gives the cameras their dynamic performance: fast startup, high-speed autofocus, short shutter-release time-lag, and short capturing intervals. DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 were designed with the essentials of imaging in mind. 5 5 Main Features High-Quality Imaging The DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 provide high-quality images demanded by discerning users. Designed to be used in a natural, intuitive way, these cameras will enable photographers to faithfully reproduce their vision. Both models use a high-resolution CCD and a high-performance Minolta GT LENS. Images are processed with the Minolta CxProcess system and 12-bit A/D conversion. The cameras are designed to use Type I and Type II CompactFlash cards making them compatible with IBM Microdrives. High Resolution CCDs DiMAGE Million Pixel 2/3-Type CCD The 2/3-type CCD boasts 5.24 million pixels, the highest number of pixels available in consumer digital cameras.* This allows impressive printouts of camera images on A3-size paper at 150 dpi, and on A5-size paper at 300 dpi The DiMAGE 7 is supported by Epson s latest PRINT Image Matching technology which can effortlessly make prints that reflect the original image. The value of this high-resolution CCD becomes apparent when an image is cropped; the image can retain an impressive resolution. In spite of being a megapixel element, each pixel in the 2/3-type CCD is relatively large, providing a wide dynamic range. * as of April 30, 2001 DiMAGE Million Pixel 1/1.8-Type CCD The DiMAGE 5 is equipped with a high-quality 1/1.8-type CCD with 3.34 million pixels. This resolution allows for exceptional printouts of images on B4-size prints at 150 dpi, and 13 x 17 cm prints at 300 dpi. The DiMAGE 5 is also supported by Epson s PRINT Image Matching.

6 High-Performance MINOLTA GT LENS All-glass APO 7X Zoom Lens with AD Glass and Aspheric Elements Starting with the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5, Minolta will create a new, high-performance lens class for digital cameras: Minolta GT LENSES. GT is derived from G Lens Technology. Minolta will use its expertise in producing professional-quality interchangeable G-series SLR lenses used on top-of-the-line cameras such as the Dynax 9, and apply it to the production of optics for its digital products. With its longtime experience in optical glass manufacturing and lens design, Minolta will retain a distinct advantage over virtually every other camera and lens manufacturer. Each lens will be defined by highimage quality with minimum chromatic aberration and curvilinear distortion, and high-resolution, especially in the high frequency range. The Minolta GT LENS (7.2mm mm, ƒ/2.8 - ƒ/3.5, APO) on the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 consists of 16 glass elements in 13 groups. To achieve high-performance in this extremely compact APO (apochromat) lens, two AD (anomalous dispersion) glass elements to minimize chromatic aberration, and two molded-glass aspheric elements to minimize curvilinear distortion were incorporated. Minolta s optical engineers employed exclusive technology so that each element is precisely aligned under strict tolerances. The results are sharp, detailed images at all focal lengths. With the potential to form a highresolution image on a seven-million pixel 2/3-type CCD, the GT LENS will produce high-quality images in both models. CxProcess New Image-Processing Technology Images formed on the CCD are enhanced by Minolta's exclusive CxProcess, a new image-processing technology born from the concept of providing Clear and excellent images that faithfully reproduce the photographer s vision. The x also signifies that the processing technology multiplies image clarity. The CxProcess will evolve with the advancement of hardware technology. In image processing, too much emphasis on natural color produces flat desaturated color pictures, while overemphasizing the color range creates an unnatural color scheme. The CxProcess balances both extremes by optimizing colors. It critically controls the elements indispensable for image quality: sharpness, color reproduction, tonal gradation, and noise.

7 12-bit A/D Conversion Accurate tonal reproduction requires analogue to digital conversion that can finely interpret a wide dynamic range. The DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 s 12-bit A/D conversion can handle deep shadows, brilliant highlights, and billions of colors, providing a fine tonal gradation with up to 4,096 levels in each R/G/B channel. The difference between standard 10-bit A/D conversion, with a limit of 1,024 levels per channel, and Minolta s advanced 12-bit A/D conversion is plainly obvious in portraiture; smooth complexion, rich shadows, luminous highlights, and fine eye and hair detail that bring the subject to life. Ultra-high 7X Optical Zoom Ratio Expanding the Photographer s Vision The DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 s compact and high-quality Minolta GT LENS is a fast ƒ/2.8 - ƒ/3.5 highpower 7X optical zoom, which allows the freedom to photograph in almost any situation. The 7X zoom can shift from a wide-angle setting for dynamic landscapes and interiors, to a telephoto setting for intimate portraits or action sports. The macro setting permits vivid close-up pictures without any special equipment. Each model offers a choice of zooming range. The DiMAGE 7 allows for a wider-angle of view, whereas the DiMAGE 5 has a greater telephoto reach. DiMAGE 7 s 7X zoom lens is equivalent to a 28mm to 200mm zoom lens on a 35mm camera; DiMAGE 5 s 7X zoom lens is equivalent to a 35mm to 250mm zoom lens. Digital Zoom The digital zoom allows for super-telephoto shots with a touch of a button. The 2X digital zoom on the DiMAGE 7 pushes the lens zoom ratio up to 14X, an equivalent of a 400mm lens on a 35mm camera. The DiMAGE 5 s 2X digital zoom stretches the reach of the optical zoom to an equivalent of a 500mm lens on a 35mm camera to give impressive super-telephoto shots.

8 Macro Function The macro setting produces high-resolution images of small objects; it is simple to capture the minute detail of a watch face. With a working distance of 13cm from the lens, the DiMAGE 7 can cover an area of approximately 4cm X 5cm, and the DiMAGE 5 an area of approximately 3cm X 4cm. The variable-position Digital Hyper Viewfinder makes taking close-up photographs in confined spaces easy. High-Performance Digital Hyper Viewfinder Supporting Creative Image Makers The DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 s Digital Hyper Viewfinder is a sophisticated device that supports the photographer with information and features that cannot be found in an optical viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder s reflective ferroelectric LCD provides photographers clear images, even under bright light. This is the first time that a ferroelectric viewfinder has been used on a high-resolution consumer SLR-type digital camera. The viewfinder LCD has a visual resolution equivalent to 220,000 pixels. This variableposition viewfinder can be tilted up to 90 degrees, serving as an angle-finder when the camera is mounted on a tripod or used in low-angle shooting. The viewfinder is an information center that provides the photographer with an array of camera data. The Digital Hyper Viewfinder allows the photographer to simultaneously monitor the image and camera settings. The viewfinder immediately displays changes made with the Digital Effects Control to exposure, contrast, and color saturation as well as adjustments in the preset and custom white-balance modes. 4X Electronic Magnification (DiMAGE 7 Only) DiMAGE 7 s 4X Electronic Magnification can enlarge the central area of the image in the viewfinder during manual focusing. This important feature facilitates focusing when image sharpness is critical, especially with close-up photography.

9 Digital Effects Control Supporting the Photographer s Vision A wonderful assistant for creative photography, the Digital Effects Control lets photographers control image quality, and view the results immediately on the Digital Hyper Viewfinder. The Digital Effects Control can control exposure, contrast, and color saturation in the camera to change the values in the scene. The use of the Digital Effects Control with digital subject program selection creates a powerful combination that allows for responsive image control under a variety of shooting conditions. High-Performance Autofocus and Autoexposure Featuring fast, high-performance AF and precise exposure metering, the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 offer reliable performance that is indispensable to creative photography. High-Performance AF The main AF control uses a wide focus area consisting of three AF sensors. A cross-hair AF sensor in the center accurately determines subject distance regardless of horizontal or vertical subject contrast. Minolta has incorporated flexible focus control into a digital camera for the first time in the world. Flex Focus Point provides greater operator control over autofocusing. With a press of a button, the wide focus area can be switched to a cross-hair spot focus point; this focus point can be moved to any position within the image area. The Flex Focus Point can be used for subjects at the edge of the frame or for singling out a specific subject from a number of objects at varying distances. With the very shallow depth-of-field in macro photography, the Flex Focus Point can eliminate focusing errors with off-centered subjects since the camera does not need to be moved to use a focus-lock function and then recomposed.

10 The responsive AF is a product of the performance of the high-speed image-processing LSI chip. Photographers can also choose between Single-shot AF and Continuous AF. High-Performance Autoexposure The cameras offer three exposure metering modes: multi-segment, center-weighted, and spot. The DiMAGE 7 employs 300 segments in multi-segment metering; the DiMAGE 5 uses 256 segments. The multi-segment metering technology in the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 uses both light values and color information. With emphasis on the main subject, the luminance patterns on the CCD and AF information are used to accurately calculate the exposure. At the same time, the multi-segment metering system employs the white-balance controls to evaluate the color distribution of the image; if there is a large proportion of yellow in the image, the metering system assumes that the subject s reflectance is high and will adjust the exposure accordingly. The result is natural, well-exposed color images. Fast, Effortless Operation With the DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5, the photographers will never miss important moments. Both cameras perform quickly and effortlessly. The high-speed LSI chip gives the cameras their dynamic performance: fast startup, high-speed autofocus, short shutter-release time-lag, and short capturing intervals. High-Speed LSI for Digital Imaging and Signal Processing The high-speed LSI chip rapidly processes image data and signals. The DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 s LSI chip incorporates a high-speed 32-bit RISC CPU, and is connected to a large capacity SDRAM through a 32-bit data bus.

11 Optimum Camera Control Layout Facilitates Use The camera s controls are optimally laid out so they can be used when viewing a subject through the viewfinder while shooting. Frequently used functions are placed in a quick, simple function-dial system. The Digital Hyper Viewfinder and the LCD monitor offer a full array of shooting information. Conveniently located near the shutter-release button, the Pro-auto button allows novice users to easily reset the camera to fully-automatic operation. The Digital Hyper Viewfinder and the LCD monitor offer a simple Graphic User-Interface. The eyepiece sensors detect if the Digital Hyper Viewfinder is being used, and switch the display between the viewfinder and the monitor accordingly. System Accessories Expanding the Versatility of the Cameras Program Flash 5600HS(D) and 3600HS(D) The powerful Program Flash 5600HS(D)(guide No.: 56) and 3600HS(D) (guide No.: 36), offer versatile functions such as auto power zoom, and test flash. 12 12 Diverse Functions for Creative Photography The DiMAGE 7 and DiMAGE 5 give the photographers as much control or carefree automation as they want. The cameras will perform flawlessly whether photographers want to choose each setting themselves or enjoy the freedom and simplicity of the sophisticated automatic controls. A Selection of Exposure Modes The cameras offer extensive exposure modes giving programmed, automatic, or manual control over shutter and aperture settings. Shutter speeds range from 4 seconds to a very fast 1/2000th second including Bulb; the maximum aperture is a fast f/2.8. P (programmed AE) mode: automatically selects the optimum shutter speed and aperture combination for quick, easy shooting. Once the exposure is determined, photographers can further shift the shutter speed and aperture combination using the control dial without changing the exposure value. A (aperture priority) mode: allows for various experiments with depth of field by manually selecting the aperture settings. The camera will choose the appropriate shutter speed to ensure accurate exposures. S (shutter priority) mode: ideal for taking creative pictures of moving subjects by either freezing the action with a high shutter speed or blurring the motion with longer shutter settings. The camera will choose the appropriate aperture to ensure accurate exposures. M (manual) mode: photographers have entire control over shutter speed and aperture settings. Bulb exposures of night scenery can be made.

13 Digital Subject Program Selection Unlike subject program modes on conventional film cameras, the digital subject program selection combines shutter and aperture settings with image processing to optimize results under specific conditions. Portrait mode: emphasizes the subject s skin tone to produce a solid, yet smooth complexion. Sports Action mode: continuous AF and fast shutter speeds track and freeze active subjects. Sunset mode: optimizes exposure and color balance to bring deep rich sunsets. Night Portrait Mode: reproduces spectacular night scenery with rich, smooth, noise-free shadows and bright vivid colors. The exposure control balances the flash and ambient light to ensure the subject and background are properly exposed. Text Mode: exposure control and image processing produce sharp images of text on white backgrounds. Automatic, Preset, and Custom White Balance Control Three types of white-balance adjustments allow flexible color-temperature control. The automatic setting provides carefree camera operation where the white balance automatically adjusts for each lighting condition. If they choose, photographers can use preset white balance settings for common light sources: daylight, tungsten, cloudy, and fluorescent. For critical applications, the custom setting allows the white balance to be calibrated to a specific lighting situation.

14 Camera Sensitivity Control - Auto, ISO 100, 200, 400, and 800. Both models offer four sensitivity settings: Auto, 100, 200, 400, and 800 (ISO equivalent). The automatic sensitivity gain gives the camera control over the sensitivity; the camera will increase the gain in low-light conditions to minimize camera shake and blurring. Photographers also have control over camera sensitivity with choice of 100, 200, 400, or 800 ISO film-speed equivalent settings. Digital Enhanced Bracketing This function allows auto bracketing of a particular scene. The slight variations produced in a series of exposures ensure a perfect image will be captured. The bracketing function not only allows for variations in exposures, but can also provide a series of images with differing contrast and color saturation. High-Performance Flash Accurate flash exposure is provided with ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) flash metering, which determines the flash output based on the autofocus information and subject s reflectance using a preflash. Dedicated Minolta external flash units can be used with the cameras. Movie Recording Not only can still images be made of important moments, but also the entire moment can be captured. Movie clips can be recorded as 320 x 240 pixel (QVGA) motion JPEG files. Long Eye Relief (20mm) The long 20mm eye relief offers comfortable viewing for eyeglass wearers with the Digital Hyper Viewfinder. Data Imprinting Data Imprinting allows photographers to record date, time, and descriptive information on an image. The Text Entry function uses an electronic keyboard to label pictures.
