1 SMS relay INTERFACE Data sheet _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT Description The PSI-MODEM-SMS-REL... is a compact remote control and signaling system. Six digital or configurable analog/digital inputs and four relay outputs with PDT contacts are monitored and controlled using SMS messages via any GSM mobile phone network. The integrated phonebook stores up to 50 numbers and addresses that are to receive the messages. Each change of status at the input sends a user-defined message to the selected receivers via SMS or . A predefined message can be used to enable and disable the outputs via SMS. In this way, an error can be acknowledged and even removed remotely. To obtain an overview of the system state, the status of the inputs and outputs can be queried. As an option, the relay outputs can be switched for a predefined period and then return to their initial state. Integrated password protection prevents unauthorized access. The PSI-MODEM-SMS-REL... is set up using the supplied configuration software. Possible fields of application of the PSI-MODEM-SMS-REL... are: Machine, building, and system monitoring Pumps, sewage treatment plants, water supply Lighting control systems, remote switchgears Elevators, gates Alarm and home technology HVAC technology 1.1 Properties SMS status query of all inputs and outputs SMS remote control of outputs Notification via SMS on change of status at input Maximum of 5 receivers per SMS message Alarm generation on voltage failure via SMS Easy configuration on PC without programming knowledge Installation component model according to DIN Mobile phone network: 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz (quad band GSM module) WARNING: This device is not suitable for monitoring sensitive systems or time-critical processes. 5 6 Overview of functions 6.1 Operation The module starts operating automatically when the voltage is applied. If the GSM signal level is sufficient, the module logs in to the GSM network. Two LEDs indicate the status. The GSM LED indicates whether or not the module is logged into the GSM network. In addition, the transmission of an SMS message is visualized. The status LED indicates the operating states of the SMS relay. 6.2 Messages The application of a signal or a signal change at an input triggers an SMS message or . An SMS message can be sent to several receivers simultaneously or in succession. The configuration to send messages "in succession" means that if the SMS message is not acknowledged by a receiver, it is automatically forwarded to the next device after a preconfigured time. Alarm generation chains with a maximum of five receivers per I/O can therefore be defined. When the module is switched on, an SMS message is sent to all configured numbers. This means that a voltage interrupt or voltage recovery can be indicated. Power failure In the event of a voltage failure, up to 5 messages can be sent if required. Following voltage recovery, a message can be sent to predetermined devices if required. Remote control The outputs can be controlled (ON/OFF) using a defined SMS message (default message is "#PASSWORD:SET:OUTPUT1"). If caller identification is activated, SMS messages are only accepted from numbers that are in the phonebook of the SMS relay. 6.3 Remote querying The status of inputs and outputs can be queried via SMS. Again, the SMS message can be individually configured. 6.5 Configuration software The supplied SMS-REL-CONF configuration software supports the user during startup and on later modifications to the settings. The software runs on a standard PC with Windows 2000 or later to Windows 7. The SMS relay is connected to the PC via a serial V.24 (RS-232) connecting cable. The following settings can be made: Entering a PIN for the SIM card (optional) Changing the PIN for the SIM card Message when the module is switched on/off Message as a function check at a fixed interval in minutes, hours or days Receiver addresses for the SMS, controlled by the inputs Required confirmation when SMS is received can be enabled/disabled Number identification (caller ID) on/off Text for the relevant input can be freely defined (2x) Text for control of the relevant output can be freely defined (3x) SMS message on a change in signal status (rising and/ or falling edge) at the input Enabling and/or disabling the output, constant or for a set duration Acknowledgment of every control command (configurable) Password required for remote control (on/off) In addition to the settings, various queries can be made (diagnostics): GSM reception (field strength) Network provider display and selection (in home network defined by SIM card) Credit balance query (for prepaid cards, function is not supported by all mobile phone providers) Status query for GSM and module (according to LED) 6.4 Configuration The SMS relay is configured via a PC, which is connected to the SMS relay via a serial V.24 (RS-232) interface _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT 5

6 7 Connecting the SMS relay 7.1 Selecting an antenna The SMS relay is supplied with a rod antenna. Longer power failures (t 1 second) are detected and an alarm SMS message is sent according to the configuration. The device then switches off. In the event of a voltage failure, once the device has restarted and the SMS relay has logged into the GSM network, the states of the outputs are the same as before the failure (memory function). 9.4 Diagnostics and error messages The SMS relay, together with the configuration software, can display the current receive quality (field strength). The SMS relay must be connected to a PC via the connecting cable. Diagnostics can be accessed via the "Option" menu, "Diagnostics". In addition to the receive quality, other device information is also provided (version numbers, error codes, and network provider) _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT 9

10 10 Configuring the SMS relay 10.1 Configuration in online and offline mode The SMS relay configuration can be set up (e.g., create phonebook, enter SMS messages) without a connection to the device. A new or existing file can be opened and edited for this purpose. The created file must then be downloaded to the SMS relay via the connecting cable. In offline mode, diagnostics are not active. The diagnostics can only be accessed once the SMS relay is connected to the PC. Establishing a connection Disconnect the SMS relay from the network. Insert the SIM card (see page 7). Connect the PC and SMS relay using the supplied connecting cable (see page 7). Connect the SMS relay to the network. As soon as the SMS relay is ready (after around 100 seconds), the status and GSM LEDs flash regularly every second. Start the configuration software. Open the corresponding configuration file or create a new file. Select the relevant COM port. ("Option" menu, "Communication Settings"). The SMS relay can now be configured to meet your requirements or the prepared file can be downloaded Selecting the language The SMS relay configuration software offers the option of changing language. The program does not have to be restarted after the selection has been made. In the "Option" menu, select "Select language" and then select the desired language Managing the phonebook The software offers the option of managing up to 50 phone numbers or addresses. Phone numbers The numbers are the receivers of SMS messages. With a defined security option, only the devices entered in the phonebook can switch the outputs of the SMS relay. Figure 9 SMS relay phonebook Enter the phone numbers in international format (with country code and dialing prefix), e.g., (+41 Switzerland, +49 Germany, +31 The Netherlands) The "Name" array can be used to sort the list alphabetically in ascending or descending order. Sorting has no effect on entries that are used. The "default" entry shall be replaced with an own entry! Add Enter a new phone number Edit Edit a selected phone number Delete Delete a selected phone number addresses Activate first the function in the field "Activate " and enter the provider service number. Register now the addresses as follows: Add register of a new address Edit editing of an already existing entry Delete deleting of an existing entry Please enter the addresses in the format xxx@xxx.xx _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT 10

11 10.4 Specifying basic settings You can now configure the SMS relay. Figure 10 SMS relay settings The "Settings" tab is used to set data for sending SMS messages, which is used for device identification. PIN The SIM card is protected with a PIN code. Enter the SIM card PIN code in the "Enter PIN (Device)" field. A configuration file can only be transmitted to the SMS relay if a PIN is entered. However, in offline mode a configuration file can be edited and saved without entering a PIN. For other data, please refer to the SIM card documentation. This also describes how the SIM card can be unlocked if it is blocked after three incorrect PIN entries. To do this, the SIM card is removed from the SMS relay and inserted in a mobile phone. The card can now be unlocked according to the network operator's instructions. Provider search The automatic provider search depends on the SIM card inserted in the SMS relay. The provider data and access rights stored on the SIM card are used. The operator is always specified when the SIM card is purchased. With the "Automatic" option, the network operator is selected according to the SIM card. This is useful when the card is operated in a home network. When used overseas, the same SIM card can be operated on other GSM networks depending on the roaming contract. With the "Manual" option, the system scans several times for available GSM networks. The result of this search is displayed in a network list. Click "Search" to display the available networks. The desired network can now be selected. SMS relay description The "SMS Relay description" field can be used to enter the installation location of the SMS relay. All messages sent by this SMS relay use this name for identification. The SMS relay identification can be deactivated so that the messages can be sent without this identification. The character length of the entire SMS message is reduced by the character length of this name. The number of characters currently available is displayed. NOTE: The use of special characters may cause problems. Please use only letters and numbers. Trailing information The trailing information of each message (date, time, remaining balance) can be activated or deactivated in the field "Trailing Message Info" located under tab "Settings". Enable local authentication The local access via RS-232 can be protected by a password. Receivers of status messages The receivers of SMS messages can be selected from the phonebook. To do this, click on the expansion arrow and select the corresponding entry _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT 11

12 10.5 Setting status messages "Startup message" This option can be used to send a corresponding SMS message to the preset numbers on every SMS relay startup (power up or voltage recovery). The contents of the SMS message can be modified and adapted to meet your requirements. "Power failure message" This option can be used to send a corresponding SMS message to the preset numbers on every SMS relay voltage failure, informing the receiver that the supply voltage has failed in the application. The contents of the SMS message can be modified and adapted to meet your requirements. Figure 11 SMS relay settings The SMS relay can send the following status messages. NOTE: The use of special characters may cause problems. Please use only letters and numbers. Remote querying all inputs and outputs The device offers the option of querying the status of all inputs and outputs via SMS. To do this, a password is sent to the device via SMS. The preset password is "#PASSWORD:SEND:STATUS". It can be fully adapted and modified to meet your requirements for remote querying. The response is sent to the same phone number (caller ID). The states of the inputs and outputs are indicated in the SMS message as follows: I: Inputs 1 to 6 (0 = OFF/1 = ON) O:0101 Outputs 1 to 4 (0 = OFF/1 = ON) "Send the status of all In- and Outputs with every message" This option can be used to send the status of inputs and outputs in the above format with every SMS message. "Send periodic status message" The periodic message is used as a function check. An SMS message is sent at regular intervals. The message can be sent daily (time), weekly (time, day) or monthly (time, date). The contents of the SMS message can be modified and adapted to meet your requirements _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT 12

13 PSM MODEM SMS RELAY Input Output PSI-MODEM-SMS-REL/AS/6DI/4DO Output Ord.No.: V / 10A GSM Status PSI-MODEM-SMS-REL Configuring inputs Figure 12 Configuring inputs Figure 13 Settings for input 1 General SMS IN The SMS relay has 6 inputs. Each of these inputs can send a freely definable SMS message to up to five predefined phone numbers when controlled or if the input signal fails. In general, two events can trigger an SMS: the change from "ON" to "OFF" and the change from "OFF" to "ON". Both events can be activated, or just one event can be activated. A separate message text can be entered for each event. NOTE: The use of special characters may cause problems. Please use only letters and numbers. If the "Confirmation" option is selected, the event message is sent to the next receiver if the SMS relay does not receive confirmation from the receiver within a specified period of time. Alarm generation chains with a maximum of five receivers can therefore be defined. The device processes the five assigned receiver numbers and then begins again at the first number. This process is repeated for the number of cycles specified under "Number of loops". As soon as the device receives a confirmation, the process is stopped. If no confirmation is received, the message is sent to the next receiver once the specified time has elapsed. If the "Keyword for confirmation" option is not selected, caller ID is used as the security check and a blank SMS can be sent to the SMS relay as confirmation. If the "Confirmation" option is not selected, all the receivers assigned to this action receive an SMS message at the same time, with no repetition. If a password is specified for confirmation, an SMS must be sent to the SMS relay with this password in order to stop the alarm generation chain. Sometimes several inputs may change state simultaneously or at least within the same message process. These changes in state are detected simultaneously by the SMS relay and one SMS is sent for each change in state. Switch-on delay If an input signal is present, it is possible to set a time delay for sending the message. When switch-on delay is active, the SMS relay only responds after the set time by sending the predefined message if the signal is still present. In other words, the input signal is ignored for this period of time. Time delays from 0.1 seconds to 99.9 hours can be set. Off delay If an input changes from HIGH to LOW, i.e., the signal is no longer present at the input, an off delay can be activated. When off delay is active, the SMS relay only sends the predefined message after the set time if the signal has not been restored. Time delays from 0.1 seconds to 99.9 hours can be set. NOTE: Ensure that each input has at least one phone number in the list of receivers. This applies even if the input is not connected. If there is no receiver entered for an input, the file cannot be saved or downloaded to the SMS relay _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT 13

14 PSM MODEM SMS RELAY Input Output PSI-MODEM-SMS-REL/AS/6DI/4DO Output Ord.No.: V / 10A GSM Status PSI-MODEM-SMS-REL Configuring outputs SMS OUT Figure 14 Configuring outputs The device only responds to the precise wording, i.e., the message must correspond exactly to the set wording. The device is not case-sensitive. NOTE: The use of special characters may cause problems. Please use only letters and numbers. If the "Number identification" option is selected, switching commands are only taken into account if they come from numbers entered in the phonebook. The SMS relay can send a confirmation to the sender when an output is switched. The contents of the SMS message can be modified and adapted to meet your requirements. SMS texts for switching on and switching off can be detected. In addition, an SMS message can be defined that is sent if an output is already in the desired state and therefore no action was taken. These SMS messages are always sent to the sender of the message. Time function A time function can be used to switch off an output after a certain period of time without a switching command being sent via SMS. Switching times from 0.1 seconds to 99.9 hours can be set. If the output switches off after the set time has elapsed, an SMS message is sent which confirms this action. If a switching command is sent before the set time has elapsed, this command is followed. This time function must be activated separately. Figure 15 Settings for output 1 The SMS relay has 4 relay outputs (PDT, 10 A, 250 V). These outputs can be controlled via SMS, i.e., they can be switched ON or OFF. Each output can be activated separately. The password and message text for switching the output can be freely defined. The text is preset to "#PASSWORD:SET:OUTPUT1" and can be adapted to meet your requirements. Due to the existing tolerances, the switching times do not support the monitoring or control of time-critical processes _en_03 PHOENIX CONTACT GmbH & Co.
