One of the more popular forms of coding in recent times is the creation of applications (apps), or apps, that run on mobile devices like phones and tablets.

Understanding the basics of wireless is essential to appreciating mobile connectivity, and how it delivers the coverage and capacity to power all those amazing mobile experiences we love. One of the more popular forms of coding in recent times is the creation of applications (apps), or apps, that run on mobile devices like phones and tablets. You probably use a range of different applications in your everyday life. Therefore, this course aims to learn the basics of Android applications and java programming, and take the first step on your journey to becoming an Android developer. This course is designed for students who are new to programming, and want to learn how to build Android applications. 2. Mobile Application A mobile application, most commonly referred to as an application, is a type of application software designed to run on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet computer. Mobile applications frequently serve to provide users with similar services to those accessed on PCs. Applications are generally small, individual software units with limited function. This use of software has been popularized by Applications Store, which sells thousands of applications for the iphone, ipad and ipod Touch. A mobile application also may be known as an applications, Web applications, online applications, iphone applications or smartphone applications. Mobile applications are a move away from the integrated software systems generally found on PCs. Instead, each application provides limited and isolated functionality such as a game, calculator or mobile Web browsing. Although applications may have avoided multitasking

2 because of the limited hardware resources of the early mobile devices, their specificity is now part of their desirability because they allow consumers to hand-pick what their devices are able to do. The simplest mobile apps take PC-based applications and port them to a mobile device. As mobile applications become more robust, this technique is somewhat lacking. A more sophisticated approach involves developing specifically for the mobile environment, taking advantage of both its limitations and advantages. For example, apps that use location-based features are inherently built from the ground up with an eye to mobile given that you don't have the same concept of location on a PC. 3. Operating systems A mobile Operating System (OS) is software that allows smartphones, tablet PCs and other devices to run applications and programs. A mobile OS typically starts up when a device powers on, presenting a screen with icons or tiles that present information and provide application access. Mobile operating systems also manage cellular and wireless network connectivity, as well as phone access. including: Many types of mobile operating systems are available for smartphones or/and tablet PCs, Android, BlackBerry OS, webos, Apple ios, Symbian, Windows Mobile Professional (touch screen), Windows Mobile Standard (non-touch screen), and Bada. The most popular are the Apple iphone, and the newest: Android. Android, a mobile OS developed by Google, is the first completely open-source mobile OS, meaning that it is free to any cell phone mobile network. 4. Course Discerption

3 This course surveys the core principles and techniques essential to building applications for mobile devices. This course introduces you to the design and implementation of Android applications for mobile devices. You will develop an applications from scratch, assuming a basic knowledge of java, and learn how to set up Android Studio, work with various activities and create simple user interfaces to make your applications run smoothly. This course involves a careful examination of mobile device programming. Emphases are on developing applications as a community that run on the Android platform. 5. Course Objectives following: Within a data communications course, students will have the chance to review the Mobile application basics and terms. Mobile operating systems types and functions. Compare and contrast the differences between application development for a PC environment vs. mobile device environment and among different mobile devices; Compare and contrast methods for application development; Explain application design considerations; Describe the functionality of features available on mobile devices; Develop applications, using multiple development environments for mobile devices; and Demonstrate use of the mobile application development cycle for a larger project, which may culminate in a product to market. 6. Philosophy The first five weeks are very intense. You will have individual assignments to get up to speed on programming and using the environment. A midterm will test the important things taught. After that the course will have individual or team projects. These projects consist of an application demo, report and a slides presentation/poster presentation. This class requires a lot of work. The Android platform is constantly evolving and you will have to find many answers on your own. Everything in this class is geared towards problem solving and explanation. Clearly expressing

4 ideas and concepts are important. Thus, we want to find a problem, solve it, and discuss our solutions. 7. Final Grade Composition Your grade will be calculated based on mid exams, labs, projects, and class participation, attendance and final exam. 8. Projects There will be a team project. Teams are randomly chosen and will rotate for every project. Teams are to submit their application, report and slides/poster to the class repository. Report, slide/poster specs will be given later. The team will then demo their project and report, slides/post to the class and have a brief open discussion. 9.
