North America and Oceania continue to be concentrated markets for brands, with the top smartphones accounting for 56.55% and 58.75% respectively. 6 Top Smartphone Trends (2018 Q4 vs Q3) North America saw all three of the largest adoption trends with a 0.80% increase in usage of the Apple iphone 8, 0.72% adoption of the Apple iphone X, and a 0.63% increase in Apple iphone 8 Plus usage. The Apple iphone 8, Apple iphone 8 Plus, and Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime+ had the most growth this quarter. The Apple iphone 8 had 1.10% growth, the Apple iphone 8 Plus had 0.66% growth, and the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime+ had a 0.20% increase. 7 Top Tablets The most significant market share for tablets remains with Apple s ipad Airs, with the ipad Air 2 leading for the seventh quarter in a row. The ipad Air 2 is the most popular tablet across almost all continents with Africa finding the Samsung Galaxy Tab E more popular this quarter. The Northern American and Oceania tablet markets are much more concentrated with the top tablets making up 73.08% and 81.43% of the market respectively. Joining the list this quarter is the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 LTE and Canaima TR10RS1. 8 Top Tablet Trends (2018 Q4 vs Q3) The largest growth (2.44%) comes from Oceania s increase in usage of the Apple ipad 2018, the 2 nd largest growth (2.16%) comes from Oceania s usage or the Samsung Galaxy Tab A. Globally, the Apple ipad 2018 had the most growth in 2018 Q4 of all other tablets (9.45%). The largest drop in usage (2.32%) comes from South America s increase in usage of the Apple ipad mini 2, the 2 nd largest drop in usage (1.21%) comes from Africa s usage in the Apple ipad Air 2. 9 Global Smartphone OS Versions Among Android and Apple, Android version 8.0 is now the top global OS since last quarter, gaining 3.76% share. Version 7.0 has dropped 5.22% from last quarter and is the 2 nd OS above both Android legacy and Android 6. Android legacy increased by 0.41% and Android 6.0 dropped 1.75% since last quarter. In fact, ios version 11.4 with 23.21% is the most popular OS version globally across both Android and ios. Apple s OS upgrade process is much more effective than Android, with most of their users on ios version 12.0 with 12.1 not far behind. 10 ios Smartphone Operating System Trends ios 11.4 no longer remains the most popular ios. ios 12.1 is now the most popular, ending December with 69.73% Over 90% of users are on 11.x or above, indicating the success of Apple ios upgrade process. All of the 10.x releases total only 4.02%. The ios 12.x releases show a trend toward the most recent version. 11 Android Smartphone Operating System Trends Android 8.0 is still the top OS version at the end of 2018 Q4, beating out Android 8.1 by 14.92%. Android Legacy is the 2 nd most popular OS version. Android released 9.0 last quarter, while versions 8.x account for 39.78% of Android OS. Releases 7.x accounts for 17.53% of Android traffic. Releases 6.x and prior account for 21.34% excluding legacy. 12 Video Orientation on Smartphones and Tablets
13 Smartphone Orientation for Video 82.5% of visitor to video-centric web sites held their smartphone in portrait orientation. We analyzed 3.9 million webpage visits. 25% of the visits were to video-centric sites. Despite knowledge that they were on a video site, and most of the video was displayed in landscape format, most visitors held their smartphones in portrait position. 13
14 Tablet Orientation for Video This 82.5% portrait orientation for smartphones on video-centric sites is only 9.2% lower than the 91.7% average for all websites. 15 Do Viewers Switch to Landscape Orientation? Flipping your phone from portrait to landscape provides a better video experience. The study provided measurements whether and when viewers changed orientation. 78% of users anticipated that they wanted a landscape experience. 22% of users started in portrait, but changed to landscape orientation. 16 Portrait Orientation Usage by OS The size of a device has a direct relationship with landscape orientation. Among smartphones (from 4 to 8 diagonal inches), portrait orientation slowly reduces from 89.7% to 75.2%. As the devices shift from smartphone to tablets, the landscape becomes even more frequent. 26 Support for NFC Within Price Categories Looking within each MSRP category, we find 100% of premium smartphones over $900 have NFC support. As price reduces, so does NFC support. At the $ price category 83% of smartphone usage comes from devices with NFC support. At the $200-$300 MSRP category, 47% of usage comes from smartphones with NFC support. In all price categories, support has increased from 2015 Q4 to 2018 Q4. Amazon, Tonbux, MXQ, Xgody, and Wintel all make streaming boxes with browsing capabilities. 29 Connected and Smart TV Device Models The Connected and Smart TV device market is very fragmented. In 2018 Q4, we detected over 150 devices, with no device totaling over 10%. In fact, after the top six device which were popular game consoles and Samsung TVs, no device had more than 1% of usage. 31 Form Factor Egypt has 48% of it traffic coming from smartphones. This is slightly more than desktop at 47%. Tablet s in Egypt generate 3% of traffic, which is half of what is seen in the USA at 6%. Feature phones generate 1.7% of device browser usage which is much higher than the USA, but typical for emerging economies like Egypt. 42 Report Specifications Purpose of Report ScientiaMobile publishes to provide the mobile Web community with timely information on mobile Web device usage. Included Mobile Devices =58% Feature Phone, 2% Tablet, 5% Our goal is to stimulate interest in mobile device trends, device capabilities, and tools for analyzing and managing device fragmentation. Sources of Data and Filtering The information in this report is based on a representative sample of a larger data set. The sample size is over 95.5 billion requests from April 2014 to end of December focuses on mobile devices, consisting of smartphones, tablets, and feature phones. While the data set includes desktops, laptops, smart TVs, game consoles, apps, and robots, we have excluded them, unless otherwise noted. We have used an Equivalent Weighted Sites (EWS) methodology that indexes the traffic at each site and assigns an equal weight to each site. Samples sizes for Africa and Oceania are small enough that we have a low level of confidence that these figures are representative. However, the source data from these continents continues to grow. Over time, we will improve the quality of these figures. In the meantime, we feel that more information is better than less for people looking for insights in these continents. Each time a user visits a Web page and a user agent (UA) is generated and tested by WURFL (through a number of mechanisms), a hit is recorded in the ScientiaMobile dataset. All data reported in reflects hits, not the count of physical devices generating the hit. What is a smartphone? A smartphone must meet several criteria: it must be a wireless device, have a touch screen with horizontal resolution greater than or equal to 480px, and not be considered a tablet. What is a tablet? Criteria for a tablet include: a wireless device, be marketed as a tablet, and running a mobile or tablet OS. One exception is that a full version of Windows running on a tablet is considered to be a laptop. 42
43 Definitions (continued) What is a feature phone? It is a wireless device that falls into one of the three categories: classic feature phones, modern feature phones, and old smartphones. Classic feature phone: Typically a bar, slide, or clamshell form factor with limited possibilities to install apps and a proprietary OS. Other criteria include a physical keyboard and a low price range. Examples are Nokia Series 30 and 40 or Motorola Razr devices. Modern feature phone: These phones also have a low price range. They are smartphone-like, but targeted at the classic feature phone market. They may have a smartphone OS. They borrow features from classic feature phones, such as size or screen size. Examples are Nokia Asha series or Samsung Galaxy Pocket. Old smartphones: These smartphones are older. Classic Blackberry devices and Symbian-based devices fall into this category. More recent devices with a touch screen, but with older hardware or older versions of Android, ios or Windows Phone also fall into this category. What is MNO Traffic? Traffic originating from Mobile Network Operators (MNO). It is defined, in our research method, as the connection type provided by the browser navigator.connection API.
