1 Quick Start Guide for SMS and Phonebook Manager For GSM Data-Capable Phones and Windows CE With the Socket SMS and Phonebook Manager, you can easily manage your phonebook and SMS messages from your Windows CE-based computer. For example, you can create a backup of your phonebook, add new phone numbers or change outdated entries. Standardized phonebooks can be created on the computer and then downloaded to the phone by a simple copy operation. SMS messages can be read, sent, deleted and saved in the same way as you would handle your . This Quick Start Guide briefly explains the minimum steps needed to set up and use the SMS and Phonebook Manager. These instructions assume that you have already set up the Digital Phone Card on your Windows CE-based mobile computer and have used it to make a data call with your GSM phone. If not, please refer to the user documentation for the Digital Phone Card for instructions. For more detailed information, including instructions on shortcuts, please refer to the Help files included in the software and/or the user documentation that came with your Digital Phone Card. Pocket PC screens are primarily shown. Screens from other Windows CEbased devices will be functionally equivalent except where otherwise noted. 2 STEP 1: Install the Software Software Installation for Internet Explorer Users Internet Explorer must be the default web browser. If Netscape is the default browser on your host PC, please turn the page for instructions. 1. Download the software from Socket s website at: 2. Make an active connection between the mobile computer and a host PC. Internet Explorer must be the default web browser on the host PC. An active connection exists if data can move between the host PC and mobile computer via a serial/usb/ethernet connection cable or cradle. 3. In the software you downloaded, click on SETUP.HTM. 4. Follow the Setup Center to install the software. 5. In the File Download screen, select the option that lets you open (or run) the file. IMPORTANT! YOU MUST OPEN THE FILE! DO NOT SAVE! 6. If a Security Warning screen appears, click Yes. 7. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen until setup is done. 8. Disconnect the mobile computer from the host PC. Soft reset the mobile computer by pushing the reset button. 2

3 Software Installation for Netscape Users The software download includes different setup files, but some will not work with Netscape. Be sure to use the SETUP.EXE file inside the WinCE folder. 1. Download the software from Socket s website at: 2. Make an active connection between the mobile computer and a host PC. An active connection exists if data can move between the host PC and mobile computer via a serial/usb/ethernet connection cable or cradle. 3. In the software you downloaded, open the WinCE folder. 4. Inside the WinCE folder, click on SETUP.EXE. 5. Follow the instructions that appear on your host computer screen until setup is done. 6. Disconnect the mobile computer from the host computer. Soft reset the mobile computer by pushing the reset button. 3

4 STEP 2: Insert the Card and Attach the Phone Insert the Card With the mobile computer turned ON, insert the DPC into your mobile computer s card slot. Make sure the card s purple label is on top. Plug the card directly into a CompactFlash I/O slot. OR Plug the card into a PC Card adapter, then insert combined unit into a PC Card slot. When properly inserted, the card will be fully contained within the slot, with only the connector and cable protruding. Your mobile computer may not do anything to signal successful card insertion. Warning! Do NOT insert the DPC upside down, or damage may occur! Attach the Phone Turn on the phone. Connect the free end of the data cable to the data port of your mobile phone. The data port is typically on the bottom or side of the mobile phone. In most cases, it is the same port used for charging your phone. 4

5 STEP 3: Use SMS The SMS and Phonebook Manager includes two folders: the SMS folder and the Phonebook folder. The SMS folder is for creating, modifying, and storing messages, while the Phonebook folder is for creating, modifying, and storing contact information, including information on your phone s SIM card. Preliminary Checklist! Is your mobile phone turned ON?! Is SMS service activated for your phone? Most carriers charge an extra fee for SMS service.! Have all remote networking connections on the mobile computer ended? Remote networking uses the same port needed for Socket SMS and Phonebook Manager software. Note: Because the two programs use the same port, you cannot run remote networking when the Socket SMS and Phonebook Manager is open. If you wish to perform remote networking, you must first close the SMS and Phonebook Manager. Launch the program 1. Go to Start Programs Socket SMS PB Manager. Handheld PC: Tap on the Socket SMS PB Manager icon on the desktop. 2. When the program launches, a title screen will appear, reporting your mobile phone s status on the bottom. Your phone display may also display a message such as Accessory Connected. In order for you to send SMS messages, the screen must report, PHONE READY! 5

6 Create a SMS message from the SMS folder 1. Make sure the SMS folder is open. The Phonebook button will be positioned below the icons. If you would like to send a message to someone in your SIM, Phone or other folder, tap on the icon for that folder. 2. Tap on File. In the pop-up menu, select New SMS. 3. You will use the next screen to compose your message. Use the To: field to enter the recipient s SMS number (mobile phone number). You can either enter the number manually, or you can select number(s) from the currently open SMS folder. 6

7 Enter the SMS number(s) manually: In the To: field, use the keyboard to tap in the SMS number. The plus sign + must precede each number. If you wish to send the message to multiple recipients, separate each SMS number with a semicolon ;. Select recipient(s) from folder: To send a message to recipient(s) listed in the currently open SMS folder, (e.g., SIM), tap on Multiple Recipients. In the list that appears below, select a recipient. Make sure the SMS number begins with the plus sign +, then tap Add Numbers. The recipient name will appear in the To field. Repeat to add other recipients. IMPORTANT! EACH SMS NUMBER MUST BEGIN WITH + 4. In the large field, enter a message, noting the character Count. In most cases, you can leave the default setting for Coding. 5. When done composing the message, tap Send. 7

8 Make a Phonebook Entry 1. Make sure the Phonebook is open. Tap on the Phonebook button. The Phonebook button should move above the icons. 2. Tap on the SIM or Phone icon, wherever you want to store the new Phonebook entry. If you create a new Phonebook archive (explained later), you can also store the entry there. SIM contains contact information stored on your mobile phone s SIM card, while Phone contains contact information stored directly on your mobile phone (only certain phones can do this). Using the Phonebook is an easy way to enter contacts into your SIM card or phone (rather than using phone buttons). Contacts contains contact information stored on the mobile computer. You cannot use the Phonebook to add information to Contacts. 3. Tap File New Phonebook Entry. 4. In the next screen, enter a Name and Number. Tap ok. IMPORTANT! THE NUMBER MUST BEGIN WITH + 8

9 Create a SMS Message from the Phonebook 1. Make sure the Phonebook is open. Tap on the Phonebook button. 2. Tap on SIM, Phone, or Contacts, wherever you stored the entry you wish to access. 3. In the next screen, select the entry, then tap File New SMS. 4. Complete the remaining steps as described in Creating an SMS Message from the SMS Folder. However, the SMS number should automatically appear in the To field. Make sure the SMS number begins with the + symbol. 9

10 Archive a Message 1. Make sure the SMS folder is open. Tap on the SMS button. The Phonebook button should move below the icons. 2. Tap on SIM, Phone or Sent Items, wherever the message you wish to archive is currently located. 3. Select the message. 4. Tap Edit. In the pop-up menu, select Cut or Copy. 5. Tap on the icon for the archive you wish to store the message in. 6. Tap Edit Paste. 10

11 Use the Help Files 1. Tap on Help. In the menu, select Contents. 2. In the next screen, select a help topic. 3. Information will appear about your selected topic. 11
