1 Press release Q4 2015: Healthy growth in Thailand s Technical Consumer Goods market February 15, 2016 T +(662) F +(662) Craig.griffin@gfk.com Results for GfK TEMAX Thailand for the fourth quarter of 2015 Bangkok, February 15, 2016 In the fourth quarter of 2015, Thailand s Technical Consumer Goods (TCG) market reported robust growth of 11.1%, compared to the same period in Over THB75.8 billion was generated in Q4 2015, with all seven TCG sectors reporting positive performances. 2 Photography *: highest growth sector Of all the TCG sectors, the Photography (PH) sector in Thailand grew the most in the last quarter of 2015, generating increased sales of 26.6%, compared to the same quarter of Although interchangeable-lens cameras registered a decline in sales, digital cameras surged by 35.7% to help drive the strong performance of the sector in achieving over THB2.8 billion. * Due to a change in digital camera reporting (camera kits are no longer split into cameras and lenses but are reported together), data has been reworked for the Photography sector. Small Domestic Appliances: all except two segments registered double-digit growth Except for slight falls in revenue from lower sales of shavers and hair styling products, all other Small Domestic Appliances (SDA) segments turned in positive performances in Q Led by the electric fans segment up by 30.5%, from Q4 of 2014 the total SDA market in Thailand rose by 24.3%, to attain over THB4 million. Major Domestic Appliances: double-digit rises for all segments In Q4 2015, all three tracked segments in the Major Domestic Appliances (MDA) sector reported robust growth. While washing machines surged in sales by 23%, refrigerators also grew by 19.2%, and microwave ovens by 15%, respectively, compared to Q Overall, the sector garnered over THB8 billion in Q4 an overall net increase of 20.5%, compared to the same period a year ago. Telecommunications: phablet sales almost doubled In Q4 2015, sales in the Telecommunications (TC) sector also enjoyed strong growth up by 12.5%, compared to the same period in In particular, phablets reported an almost twofold surge in sales rising by 98.9%, compared to Q The positive performances of headsets and mobile handsets up by 47.2% and 4.4%, respectively also helped the sector to reach over THB34 billion in sales. Consumer Electronics: worst-performing sector in Q Several segments in the Consumer Electronics (CE) sector saw significant double-digit declines in sales in the fourth quarter of 2015, compared to the same period in These included the car navigation equipment, cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs, portable media players, video player/recorders and headphones segments. However, the sector s main segment Panel TVs grew by 11.9%, compared to the same period in 2014, to achieve over THB10.5 billion in sales in the fourth quarter an increase of 8.8%, 2

3 from Q Information Technology **: strong decline in mediatablets Mediatablets, a major segment in the IT sector, registered a 17.5% fall in sales in Q4 2015, compared to the same period in the previous year. However, the positive growth registered by the two other key contributing IT products mobile, and desktop computing products managed to garner more sales to cushion the IT sector s strong decline. In Q4 2015, Thailand s IT sector was up slightly by 1.2% from the same period in 2014, to reach revenue of just above THB14.6 billion. ** The IT sector has been expanded to include more products. Therefore, the results from Q have been reworked, resulting in a larger market size. Office Equipment and Consumables ***: sustained performance from the previous year In the last quarter of 2015, although sales of printers were down by 14.7%, compared to Q4 2014, the healthy demand for multifunctional devices and inkjet cartridges up by 7.7% and 21.3%, respectively helped Thailand s Office Equipment and Consumables (OE) sector maintain its sales performance from the year before. In total, over THB1.5 billion in revenue was achieved. *** The OE sector has been expanded to include more products. Therefore, the results from Q have been reworked, resulting in a larger market size. GfK TEMAX Thailand: continued improvement is anticipated in the year ahead A series of actions taken by the government is likely to strengthen the Thai baht, which has seen some depreciation over the past year. Several large government projects are pending. These include new transportation initiatives including the construction of railways which are scheduled to be implemented at the start of the Thai fiscal year (October 2016). This will help to drive growth in not just the construction industry, but also in the overall market. Therefore, it is anticipated that the Thailand TCG market will continue its growth trend in
