Unique Value of Huawei GSM-R Mature reliable architecture Comprehensive redundancy solutions EIRENE compliancy track record Standard compliance certified by Notified Bodies IOT tested by vendor independent rail authority High speed validated All equipment ready for LTE World s first LTE for railway project Industry first SIP dispatcher interface GSM-R extended frequencies supported Professional Huawei s GSM-R solution is strictly developed in compliance with GSM-R standards and it s main architecture consists of an IP core network, Base Station Controller, conventional and distributed base stations as well as a range of mobile stations. To offer maximum flexibility to customers, Huawei s GSM-R solution incorporates products such as dispatcher sets, and cab radios from market-leading GSM-R sub-system suppliers. Strict compliance across interfaces allows Huawei customers to mix and match multi-vendor GSM-R infrastructures (i.e., a core network supplied by vendor A and an access (BSS) network supplied by vendor B. These multivendor infrastructures have operated for many years and have repeatedly been validated by rail customers in China, Turkey and Germany. Huawei GSM-R products are developed strictly according to the latest EIRENE specifications and meet all functional and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements required for interoperability.
Compliance Certificates Issued by Notified Bodies and Rail Customers In May 2009, Huawei obtained an EIRENE compliancy certificate from Lloyd s register (European Notified Body). In terms of functions, all GSM-R-specific functions are achieved and all functions comply with the EIRENE specifications. The network interfaces and signaling messages of the GSM-R system comply with the related 3GPP protocols. In 2010, TUV Rheinland confirmed Huawei EIRENE compliancy in an extensive IOT campaign performed between Funkwerk cab radio equipment and the Huawei GSM-R system. The GSM-R cab radio system MESA23-05 (SW CR_SW ) has been assessed within the Huawei GSM-R Trackside Network (configuration according to chapter 4.2.4) in respect of compliance with the applicable requirements. No deviations from the interoperability requirements have been revealed. In 2012, Huawei GSM-R received the EN50126 Compliance certification. LIoyd s Register Rail certifies that Huawei s GSM-R development process can be considered as meeting the relevant requirements of EN50126.
Comprehensive IOT Coverage As early as 2005, Huawei started extensive interoperability campaigns with market-leading GSM-R peripheral equipment suppliers. Huawei s GSM-R labs offer all necessary facilities to integrate the latest features and customer specific developments for the rail transport segment. In the past, we performed interoperability test with the most important market players of GSM-R products. Today, Huawei s GSM-R solution has been successfully interoperability tested with GSM-R infrastructures (core and access sub systems) from NSN and Nortel/Kapsch. Some of these networks have been in rail operation for many years. For terminals and other OEM sub-systems, Huawei integrated GSM-R solutions from SIEMENS, Funkwerk, Frequentis, Selex, Sierra Wireless, and many more. In several commercial projects, Huawei s GSM-R solution is fully integrated into other vender s GSM-R infrastructures (NSS and BSS). For example, -for China s Cheng Guan line, Huawei s GSM-R NSS interconnects with NSN GSM-R NSS, -in Guangzhou-Shenzhen Express Line, Huawei BSS is fully integrated with NSN Core-Network -in Xinfeng shunting yard, Huawei BSS is fully integrated with Nortel/Kapsch NSS. -In Turkey Huawei s BSS is fully integrated with the existing NSN core network for the Eskisehir-Alayunt- Kutahya-Balikesir, EKB ERTMS line. Validated High Speed Coverage High-speed trains help railways gain market share in passenger traffic and answer customer demands for mobility. New high-speed lines with speeds of 350km/h are increasingly common. In wireless communications, high-speed brings challenges; for example, the Doppler frequency shift requires highly sophisticated technology to re-structure RF signal quality, with speed- handovers appear more frequently, which, again, add to the end-to-end system s overall QoS. Therefore, for high-speed trains, new technologies are needed to combat the challenges of velocity. Automatic Frequency Correction (AFC) is used in the Huawei GSM-R solution to resolve the challenges caused by the Doppler frequency shift, and highly sophisticated handover algorithms are used to enable smooth handovers even in high speed situations. To further reduce the impact on QoS by handovers, Huawei s distributed BTS completely avoids frequent handovers across many BTS sites, eliminating any QoS impact caused by handovers for a significant extent of the network. These technologies have proven their potential on railway lines like the Shanghai Maglev line, which is operating at speeds of 430 km/h. In China, Huawei s high speed GSM-R solution is used on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen railway line, which is a CTCS level 3 (coherent with ETCS L2) line operating at 350 km/h, as well as a number of other lines operating at similar speeds.
Reliable Full Redundancy Solution GSM-R plays an important role as bearer service for ETCS L2 data. The highest reliability is needed to ensure railway operation can be maintained uninterrupted. Huawei s GSM-R solution is designed to ensure the highest reliability through a three-tier strategy involving board, network element, and system levels. At the board level, 1+1 hot backup modes are applied to all major boards. In addition, software-error tolerance technologies are used on each board to provide failure isolation, flow control, task monitoring, storage protection, data verification, as a few examples. At the network element level, Huawei s GSM-R solution offers several types of nodal backup options. For the GSM-R core network, a geographical redundancy such as dual-homing MSC, Mini-A-Flex, duo-location, SGSN/GGSN pool, and 1+1HLR redundancy options are applied to further enhance overall network reliability and availability. These redundancy options are a perfect tool for avoiding network service interruptions in case of major incidents (such as loss of a complete site). In addition to the core network, special focus has been given to the BSC, which for GSM-R is considered a reliability bottleneck. With Huawei s BSC hot backup solution, this bottleneck has been eliminated using a BSC 1+1 redundancy technology. At the BTS level, Huawei s co-site double coverage feature is used to ensure high reliability, because the BTS creates two cells coexisting within the same site location. If one cell fails, the other cell takes over, dramatically improving overall system reliability.
Mature Reliability Methodology Professional tools are used to analyze network-wide system reliability and help deploy the most reliable network architecture for a GSM-R project. Necessary reliability parameters, including failure modes, recovery time, and redundancy modes are considered as input for the tool. As a result, a reliability block diagram is created highlighting key figures for each of the involved network elements, which helps the design team predict overall system reliability, identify the most vulnerable network components, and improve the final networking design. In the railway industry, demands for broadband data services are rapidly increasing. For example, video surveillance and PIS are required to improve railway safety and passenger satisfaction. To fulfill these requirements, wireless broadband data services are needed. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is seen as the candidate that can fulfill these data requirements and, at the same time, allow railways to smoothly upgrade from their existing GSM-R infrastructure. As the next generation of railway wireless communications technology, LTE is being studied by many railway bodies and Huawei is strongly supporting these studies. The migration from GSM-R to LTE is seen as a natural evolutionary path, especially considering that these technologies already coexist in many consumer communication devices. As a truly global vendor in the telecommunications industry, Huawei is a major player in the advanced GSM and LTE technologies. Based on shared hardware platforms and smart radio site solutions, Huawei s GSM-R 5.0 today supports the evolution from GSM-R to LTE for rail. Huawei s GSM-R single-cabinet core network (ecns300) adopts the ATCA platform, offering the advantages of excellent performance and high integration. More important, the ecns300 can evolve from GSM-R into LTE, thanks to its capability to support not only GSM-R but also LTE. On the other hand, Huawei s dual-mode base station, BTS3900, supports both GSM-R and LTE.
Customer References Leading in Incremental Markets with Strong Growth As of February 2014, the Huawei GSM-R solution was awarded a total of more than 20,000 kilometers of GSM-R railway lines worldwide. Success Story 1: Sochi Line Supporting the 2014 Winter Games in Russia The Sochi railway is a modern transport infrastructure being prepared for the XXII Olympic Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, in It runs about 155 kilometers with passing Tuapse, Sochi, Adler, Alpika Service, and Vesyeloe. At the end of 2011, Huawei was awarded the contract to build Sochi s GSM-R network, including the access and core networks. To guarantee the highest reliability for the Sochi railway, Huawei is supplying a hotstandby core network. Dual-homing Mobile Switch Center (MSC), duo-location BSC and redundant TRX guarantee superior end-to-end redundancy for the entire network. Along the railway line, there are 12 tunnels at a total length of 30 kilometers. As in other projects, Huawei is installing DBS3900 distributed base stations to meet customer requirements for this complex rail environment. Opening of the Sochi railway is considered a significant milestone in meeting the passenger transport demands for the Sochi Winter Olympics. After the Olympics, Huawei s GSM-R solution will continue delivering services for an improved rail transport system to the entire Sochi region and will play a significant role in tourism and the economy.
Success Story 2: EKB Line ERTMS L2 Multi-vendor System for Turkey Measuring 466 kilometers in length and designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h, the Eskisehir, Kutahya, and Balıkesir (EKB) line is an integral part of the Nine-Year Plan for High-Speed Railway launched by the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). The EKB Line will greatly enhance interconnectivity between Eskisehir, Kutahya, and other major Turkish cities, promoting economic development in the local communities. Huawei was awarded the contract in 2012 to provide wireless access equipment for the EKB project. The EKB line winds through 42 tunnels and requires high-quality GSM-R service. The rugged terrain poses significant challenges to construction, including site selection for base stations, comprehensive signal coverage requirements, and smooth communications throughout each tunnel. Leveraging its latest innovations in GSM-R, Huawei offers TCDD a unique distributed base station technology. The new technology features the RRU multi-site co-cell, which provides improved quality of service under complex situations and maximum deployment flexibility, as well as enhanced tunnel coverage along the line. The EKB Line GSM-R communication system marks the first ETCS L2 train signaling system in Turkey. The Turkish GSM-R system represents a typical multivendor network. For this line, Huawei s GSM-R was fully integrated with core networks from the existing GSM-R vendor. Success Story 3: Cape Town-Durban-Gauteng Line Sub-Saharan Africa s First GSM-R Railway The Cape Town-Durban-Gauteng Railway line is in the first phase of a countrywide GSM-R project in South Africa. This first section will have a total length of 1,200 kilometers and a designed speed of 120 km/h. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is replacing its traditional MTP1327 analog system deployed 15 years ago. The analog system s purpose was to provide ground-to-train voice services. The GSM-R digital signaling radio system will significantly improve passenger rail transport for large portions of South Africa s population. Huawei was awarded the GSM-R contract for access and core network architectures in Huawei s latest evolution of wireless rail communication technology will make available operational GSM-R voice and data services. The new system is designed to meet Europe s ETCS L2 train signaling system requirements. It consists of a series of network infrastructure products and solutions, including distributed GSM-R base stations, IP-core network, and optical transmission equipment. Success Story 4: Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Huawei Technologies was selected to design and build a GSM-R voice and data communication system for the high-speed line between the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong line, using a CTCS-3 train signaling system (compliant with ETCS L2), was China s first operational GSM-R line with a speed designed to reach 350 km/h. About one-third of the high-speed line runs through hilly terrain that required extensive construction of bridges, cuttings, and tunnels. The 10.8-kilometer Shiziyang tunnel, the system s longest, is an underwater dual-cave shield tunnel that reflects the shape of the shuttle and leaves very little room for RF equipment. Huawei s BSS solution for this challenging environment consisted of a combination of conventional BTS and repeater equipment, as well as distributed base stations. Huawei GSM-R is compatible with the two signaling systems of the mainland and Hong Kong and interworks with NSS equipment provided by other vendors. This project speeds rail access from Hong Kong to 16 mainland cities.
