Railway Telecoms Short & Long Term Actions Dan Mandoc, UIC ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Short Term ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Mobile Communications - GSM-R EIRENE Baseline 8/16 is starting to be discussed - deadline is 2011 Main items to be solved erec IP ETCS Interferences Border Crossing Equipments and usage of brand new frequency band ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
What erec does Only mobiles on sector 4 receive the REC Only controllers of line 4 receive REC Broadcast radio «4 299» erec AC 4 4 erec Cellule B Cellule C AC 6 Cellule A ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
What it could do as well (as an option) Using the same sector ID as the one for erec Only mobiles on sector 4 receive the all train call Only controllers of line 4 receive the all train call Broadcast radio «4 200» e200 AC 4 4 e Cellule B Cellule C AC 6 Cellule A ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
IP ETCS GSM-R being based on GSM 2+ Rel 99 system allows data transmissions GPRS and EDGE are available GPRS is a native solution, easy to install and cheaper It is a best effort system Work is ongoing to prove that it is suitable for ETCS fulfils Subset 093 Packet switch will bring a better usage of the spectrum, and readiness for the future technologies ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Border Crossing Trains crossing the borders using GSM-R have to roam in the new network This means to register to the new network, also as Functional numbering This leads to a up to 40 seconds blackout period, when REC is not available Best solution so far, even if seams much to expensive, leads to seconds blackout period ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Update on GSM-R Specifications Evolution ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Fixed Telecoms Railways Telecom Networks are developed on national basis, and with the exception of the dispatching systems are using on the shelf technologies The point of no return for two main drivers Optical Fiber and Digital communications is overlapped since some time The national networks are interconnected peer to peer Since GSM-R started to cross borders, an European network is under construction Transit routing, handled by international means, leads to a one network concept ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
IP Migration IP migration was under discussion Most countries on different IP migration phases feasibility, planning, pilots.. One country is declared migrated, Portugal REFER Telecom, no GSM-R yet, but in tender process Before the end of next year, we intend to produce a Railway Vision on Railway Networks IP Migration, based on already existing experience, and existing individual railways plans The results will be incorporated in the Telecom Vision 2020 It is a long term subject, but some results expected in short term. ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Network Infrastructure IP Network Corporate IP Network Routers: 113 Ethernet Switches: 510 Links: 2Mb/s To 10Gb/s Rail Operations IP Network Routers: 110 Ethernet Switches: 700 Links: 100Mb/s To 10Gb/s ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Global Telecom A parallel activity with Global Signaling is initiated for 2010 Working group is to be set-up Dedicate slot in the Global Signaling Conference Main purpose (primarily) share experience Possible target common high level FRS ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Long Term ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
The final version for the UIC Technical Report on future railway mobile telecommunications systems maybe LTE delivered Dedicated assessment meeting, also looking into the future held in Paris, , 30 participants Discussions showed many aspects to be checked when thinking to a future system ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
GSM-R offers good enough services for the Railway needs; prediction is that for 10 years it will serve well enough; change reasons are obsolesce, and interferences We are in a rush, to see if we are in a rush Some major drivers identified, when thinking to main railway applications, that would be included in mobile telecommunication standards (release): Frequency Management Interoperability Life cycle Respect both IMs and RUs needs Make the best use of the investment The logical chain is to be respected: Frequencies Operations Technologies Basic Service Concept must be defined, all possible applications must be inventoried ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Analysis should be done in a certain order: GSM roadmap Operation aspects Experience already existing for the Next Generation Network How long existing GSM-R systems will be supported? Technology choice should not be the driving factor First step is to discuss the Railways needs The past mistakes have to be avoided and overcome ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Future Radio Communication System Feasibility Study Two components: 1. Define Railway needs 2. Technological Survey ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Q Future Radio Communication System Feasibility Study WP2: Technological Survey WP1: Explore railway needs LTE developments: Trials Voice issues Group calls? Resources needed for Standard railways applications Mobility behavior Q Technical Report 2011? Q Telecom Vision 2020 Start 3GPP Work? Railways needed applications : REC/eMLPP/LDA/ FN/Fast Calls Setup/ Reliable data services Fixed network New applications Migration Letter to 3GPP indicating Railways core applications to be included in R10? ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
WP2: Technological Survey LTE is presented as a (the) future technology, software defined, capable to host also GSM terminals (with lower performances) The name seems relevant - Long Term But: It is a strictly data service, therefore voice behavior has to be explored To be checked: Mechanisms/Resources needed to serve standard Railway voice applications Behavior at 300 Km/h Predicted Life Cycle Last but not least - will GSM stop and when? ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Mission Survey the R&D and trials results; focus on Railway needs Discussions with suppliers on: Voice solutions (main isuue) Response on mobility conditions The input from WP 1, when available, will adjust the work focus ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Way forward UIC will start the work beginning 2010 Based on Trials results, and to Industry predictions, decision if to follow standardization work If yes, experts group to join standardization work Intermediate Report needed for the decision to start the work in 3GPP, Q Technical Report Q Decision if final or to be continued ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Example of basic very important question: How much throughput loss at 300 Km/h and above? 3 or 5 MHz? Voice application problems Backward compatibility Migration ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
WP1: Define Railway needs WG to prepare a introspection on Railway needed applications, based on the existing ones, and leaving the door open for possible future ones improvement on existing features Focus on main Railway needs ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Mission: Define the core functionalities Fix/avoid the past mistakes, coming from reduced choices 20 years ago Study if the data service fulfill Subset 093 Once IP in place, define a technological independent Euroradio interface (If) Apply to 3GPP to introduce the agreed core functionalities into LTE R10 Next steps. Backwards compatibilities Start working on migration scenarios, fixed network included ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Way forward UIC + suppliers + consultant company to organize the activity Call for Railways experts Interaction with all existing WGs. Intermediate Report needed for the decision to start the work in 3GPP, Q Intermediate Reports Final result Q ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Today - Vertical Markets Today, safety-critical communications for different domains are treated individually Different technologies are used Railways Public transport Urban Suburbs Security Energy At a first look, they have nothing in common, except the fact that they are all special telecoms ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Applications???? X X X X X X X X X X X Railways Public transport Urban Suburbs Security X e MLPP X Broadcast Calls X Group Calls Energy Functional Numbering Similar application, if they would be technological independent could be developed in common, at least as core functionality. ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Domains particularities: other specific applications, Railways Public transport Security Safety Critical Core Functionalities Standardized Energy Group Calls, Broadcast Calls, emlpp, Fast Call Set Up, core applications particularities, If same needs, in some areas, why not same technical platform, or even same network? ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
Roadmap Telecom Vision 2020 Telecom Vision 2020 first version is ready. The document is considered a crude one, since we intend to incorporate the results of 2010 work, on IP Migration and new technologies (LTE) study. Basic Service Concept will be reflected. Global experience will also be reflected ERTMS Platform Steering Committee
