10 Materials and Methods Measurement BCS are used to measure body fat reserves in cows BCS enable better feed planning, which helps to avoid occurrence of metabolic problems and, reproductive failure. Norwegian University of Life Sciences March 19-20, / 18

11 Materials and Methods Instrument Data were obtained from 3D overhead camera system from DeLaval for 64 Norwegian Red cows. The BCS camera is mounted on a DeLaval sort gate or on DeLaval VMS TM (Voluntary Milking System). It takes a 3D image of cows lower back every time they pass under the camera. It then calculates the body condition score of each cow and logs it in DeLaval DelPro TM Farm Manager where it is possible to view graphs of individual cows, groups or the entire herd. 14 Materials and Methods As a cow passes under the camera, it collects an image and analyzes it using the company s proprietary algorithms to assign a score on the traditional 5-point BCS scale to 0,1 point increments. Norwegian University of Life Sciences March 19-20, / 18

21 Conclusion The descriptive study of the quality and the reliability of 3D overhead camera system from DeLaval showed several instrumental errors in the measurement of BCS. The instrumental errors were illustrated in the BCS profiles at the cow level. An accurate detection of these errors is important to determine the reasons of failure.
