3 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 This qualification specification lays out key information related to the content, assessment and administration of the QNUK Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling (QCF). This document should be read in conjunction with our centre procedures. 2. QUALIFICATION PURPOSE 2.1 This is a qualification that indicates an individual can undertake a specific role in the workplace and that may be relied upon by employers. 2.2 The QNUK Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling (QCF) qualification is ideal for all staff requiring knowledge of the hazards and controls of manual handling. 3. QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE 3.1 This qualification comprises of one mandatory unit. The learning outcomes and assessment criteria are outlined in this document. 3.2 Qualification title: QNUK Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling (QCF) Qualification accreditation number (QAN) : Qualification level: Level 2 Credit value: 1 Guided learning hours (GLH): It is recommended that his qualification is refreshed every 3 years. 4 PRE-REQUISITES 4.1 It is recommended that learners have a minimum of Level 1 literacy or equivalent. 4.2 This qualification is for those over 14 years of age. 4.3 There are no other pre-requisites for this qualification. 5 GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE 5.1 This qualification is available to learners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Qualification can be delivered in other countries however learners should be aware that the protocols meet current UK requirements.
4 6 UNITS 6.1 This qualification contains one mandatory unit. 6.2 QCF Unit Title Understanding the Principles of Manual Handling Unit Reference Number A/504/ The qualification is constructed with the following learning outcomes and assessment criteria: LO1 A/C 1.1 A/C 1.2 A/C 1.3 LO2 A/C 2.1 A/C 2.2 A/C 2.3 LO3 A/C 3.1 A/C 3.2 A/C 3.3 Understand the reasons for safe manual handling Outline the potential injuries and ill health associated with incorrect manual handing Outline employers and employees duties relating to manual handling at work Outline the consequences for non-compliance with health and safety requirements at work Understand how manual handling risk assessments contribute to improving health and safety Explain the terms hazard and risk in the context of manual handling work Outline the process for carrying out a manual handling risk assessment Describe the principle of the risk control hierarchy when applied to manual handling Understand the principles, types of equipment and testing requirements associated with manual handling safety Describe safe movement principles associated with manual handling Outline the types of equipment designed to be used for manual handling tasks Outline the requirements for the testing, servicing and examination of manual handling and lifting equipment 7 TRAINING RESOURCES/EQUIPMENT 7.1 Lesson plans Centres should produce suitable lesson plans that meet the learning outcomes for the qualification Lesson plans should contain information related to: Session aims and objectives Timings for sessions Teacher and learner activity Formative assessment opportunities Resources.
5 7.2 Learning materials There are a range of suitable learner manuals for this qualification Centres may also choose to produce their own. 7.3 Training venue The training venue must meet acceptable health and safety standards and be conducive to learning, with sufficient: Size, floor surfaces, seating, writing surfaces, toilet facilities, ventilation, lighting, heating, access, exits, cleanliness, absence of distracting noise. 8 ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE 8.1 This qualification is assessed by a 15 question multiple-choice question paper. 8.2 Successful learners must achieve a score of at least 10 out of The duration of the assessment is 30 minutes. 8.4 Completed learner answer sheets should be returned to Qualifications Network for marking. 8.5 Assessment answer sheets should be copied and either ed or sent to Qualifications Network via recorded delivery. 8.6 Results will be posted on the MYQNUK website and certificates processed within published timescales. 8.7 Example assessment materials are available on our website at 9 ORDERING ASSESSMENT MATERIALS 9.1 Assessment materials should be ordered a minimum of 7 days prior to the planned assessment date. 9.2 Unused assessment materials should be securely stored. 9.3 Unused assessment materials cannot be refunded, we therefore recommend to only purchase what is likely to be used. 10 LEARNER REGISTRATIONS 10.1 Centres should register learners as soon as possible on the MYQNUK portal As this exam is marked at Qualifications Network exams officers should register learners details but not include whether they are competent or not. This will be completed by the exams team.
6 11 I.D REQUIREMENTS 11.1 Learners should be informed prior to attending the assessment that they will need to confirm their identity. This will be done on registration Where possible learners should show photographic I.D. A full list of acceptable forms of I.D is available in the centre support pages of our website. 12 RESULTS 12.1 Results will be published within 7 days of receipt. 13 REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS 13.1 Where required; reasonable adjustments should be implemented in accordance with our reasonable adjustments policy. Reasonable adjustments should not override the assessment criteria and the objective of the qualification. 14 SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS 14.1 Special considerations should be undertaken in accordance with our special considerations section of the centre procedures manual. 15 APPEALS 15.1 Where possible, learners should make appeals using the Approved Centres appeals process. Where this has been exhausted or if this is impossible the QNUK Appeals process shall be used The QNUK appeals process can be found on our website at: 16 TUTOR REQUIREMENTS 16.1 Nominated tutors are required to hold suitable qualifications and experience in order to deliver this qualification Suitable qualifications include a minimum of a Level 3 health and safety qualification and a recognised teaching qualification.
7 16.3 Suitable subject knowledge Suitable subject knowledge can be demonstrated can be demonstrated by having one of the following: A NEBOSH General Certificate in Health and Safety A Degree or Dip HE in either Environmental Health, Occupational health and safety or similar A QNUK Level 3 Award in Health and safety in the Workplace (or equivalent) A recognised Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety e.g. NEBOSH A suitable manual handling instructors course 16.4 Suitable teaching qualifications Min. Level 3 introduction to teaching qualification (Ptlls, 7307) or Proof of at least 30 hours of teaching 16.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Nominated tutors are also expected to maintain a record of their work experience and CPD undertaken in order to demonstrate the relevancy and currency of their knowledge. 17 INTERNAL VERIFICATION 17.1 Centres should ensure that trainers are verified in accordance with their documented risk rating Internal verification should be undertaken in accordance with our centre guidance. 18 PROGRESSION 18.1 Learners may wish to progress into other health and safety related qualifications including: QNUK Level 2 Award in Manual Handling Principles and Practice (QCF) QNUK Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (QCF)
