3 Part 1 Authority, affiliation, prescribed period of study and title 1. Authority The curriculum for the main subject at Master s level in Film and Media Studies (studieordningen for kandidatuddannelsen i Film- og Medievidenskab) has been drawn up under the authority endowed by section 24 of Ministerial Order no. 814 of 29 June 2010 on Bachelor and Master s programmes at universities (the Study Programme Order) and Ministerial Order no. 429 of 10 May 2012 amending the same and section 30 of Ministerial Order no of 16 December Affiliation The Master s Programme with main subject in Film and Media Studies falls under the auspices of the Study Board for Media, Cognition and Communication and the corps of external examiners for Film and Media Studies. 3. Prescribed period of study The main subject at Master s level in Film and Media Studies is prescribed to 90 ECTS credits and forms part of a two-year Master s degree, which is prescribed to 120 ECTS credits, including electives prescribed to 30 ECTS credits. (2) The Master s programme's upper secondary school concentration consists af the main subject prescribed to 75 ECTS credits and an upper secondary school Master s minor prescribed to 45 ECTS credits. (3) For students with an upper secondary school Bachelor's elective prescribed to 60 ECTS credits, the upper secondary school concentration consists of the main subject prescribed to 90 ECTS credits and an upper secondary school Master s minor prescribed to 30 ECTS credits. 4. Title Graduates from the Master s programme with main subject in Film and Media Studies are entitled to use the title Master of Arts (MA) in Film and Media Studies. The title in Danish is cand. mag. i Filmog Medievidenskab. Part 2 Admission requirements 5. Admission requirements Students who have passed or are expected to pass the Bachelor s programme in Film and Media Studies from the University of Copenhagen are entitled to admission to the Master s programme with main subject in Film and Media Studies directly after completing the Bachelor's programme in Film and Media Studies. (2) Other Bachelor s programmes granting direct admission are published on (3) The Faculty may admit other applicants than those mentioned in (1) and (2) if the Study Board assesses an applicant's educational qualifications to be equivalent to the Bachelor s programme that qualifies for direct admission and if the Faculty assesses that the applicant will be able to complete the programme. (4) Students with non-danish qualifications and students from abroad who wish to take the programme in the Danish language must pass the Studieprøven (the Higher Education Examination) before commencing their studies. Nordic citizens are exempt from this requirement, provided that they sat their qualifying examinations in Danish, Swedish or Norwegian. (5) Students with non-danish qualifications and students from abroad who wish to take the programme in English must have passed what corresponds to English at level B in the Danish upper-secondary school before commencing their studies. (6) The Faculty may demand that admission to a Master s programme requires participation in and passing of a supplementary course of up to. 3

4 (7) The supplementary course must be passed either before the beginning of the semester or at the latest at the first exam period after the student s commencing of study. (8) Each year, the Study Board decides the admission capacity of the Master s programme in Film- and Media Studies. The admission capacity is published yearly at least 1 year before the deadline for applying on (9) In the event that the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available places,, admission will be granted in accordance with a ranking of the applicants on the basis of the criteria published on Part 3 technical requirements pertaining to study 6. Reading texts in foreign languages Students must be able to read academic literature in English. Elements of the teaching will also be in English. 7. Definition of a standard page A standard page as applied to syllabus and the submission of take-home assignments,including the thesis, corresponds to 2,400 keystrokes, including spaces. When calculating the extent of takehome assignments, notes are included, but not cover page, bibliography and appendices. 8. Writing and spelling skills When assessing take-home assignments, including the thesis, both in Danish and in a foreign language, the student s writing and spelling skills (as documented in the work submitted) must be included in the overall assessment of the piece of work concerned, although the academic content is weighted most heavily. If special emphasis is placed on writing and spelling skills, this will be stipulated under the individual subject element in section 12. Part 4 Academic profile 9. Programme objectives The purpose of the main subject at Master s level in Film and Media Studies is to build upon the students academic knowledge and skills, and to improve theoretical and methodical competences in film and media. The programme has a cross-media approach. It teaches students to forge links between theory and practice when working on specific production and communication jobs and on film and media organisations communication with different audiences and user groups. The Master s programme in Film and Media Studies is also interdisciplinary, and covers both national and international conditions. The concentrations in Journalism, Culture and Society, Creative Media Industries, Cross-media Communication and Film and Audiovisual aesthetics provide a special in-depth study of certain aspects of film and media studies. 10. Competence profile for the Master s graduate Competence description The Master s programme in Film and Media Studies provides graduates with broad and in-depth competences related to working with media, including audiovisual media, digital media and the interaction between media. The programme provides students with a solid theoretical and analytical basis for understanding modern film and media culture at national and international level, including the ability to analyse complex questions relating to the role played by public- and private-sector 4

5 media companies in culture and society. Graduates in Film and Media Studies have acquired knowledge of the way in which modern film and media organisations work, and are able to work across the various media in a digital media culture: mass media, interpersonal media and network media. Graduates possess both theoretical and analytical knowledge of aesthetics and genres, the interaction between society, culture and media institutions, and the circuit of communication between sender, text and user. Graduates have a particular ability to translate theoretical and analytical knowledge into practical production and communication with different target groups in the main communication genres. The Master s programme in Film and Media Studies qualifies graduates for further education, including the PhD programme. Competency objectives A gaduate in Film and Media Studies has the following specific competences: Knowledge and understanding of genres and media, including audiovisual and digital media film and media s production, distribution and recipient conditions, including the interaction between different types of media and forms of communication the interaction between film and media and culture and society, at national and international level the application of academic methodology in relation to specific analytical issues. Skills to plan and conduct independent, empirical analyses of a defined issue concerning film and media production, distribution and use perform complex analyses of film and media products and genres select, use and critically reflect on key theories and methodologies in relation to specific issues and analyses communicate academic insights to specific audiences through selected media and communication genres. Competences to manage analytical work and independently present relevant solutions to Film and Media Studies issues discuss academic questions in an independent manner and critically assess the relevance of analytical approaches work with others on academic assignments reflect on their own academic standards within Film and Media studies in relation to current and future work assignments. The Master's programme with main subject in Film and Media Studies The Master's programme with main subject in Film and Media Studies consists of the main subject, which includes modules prescribed to a total of 90 ECTS credits, incl. the thesis, as well as the Master's elective prescribed to 30 ECTS credits. (2) The main subject includes 30 ECTS credits electives. (3) The Master s electives may be chosen from outside the main subject. (4) The programme concludes with a thesis prescribed to 30 ECTS credits. The thesis must be on a topic within the field of Film and Media Studies. (5) The programme s structured course includes, in the third semester, a mobility window of 30 ECTS credits which after application can be used by the student for studying abroad, academic internships, etc. Students opting for 30 ECTS mobility in this semester may in their second semester choose the subject element Audience and User Studies along with the compulsory subject element Cross-Media Production and Communication. The Master's programme with main subject in Film and Media Studies and upper secondary school concentration The Master's programme with main subject in Film and Media Studies with upper secondary school concentration consists of the main subject, which includes modules prescribed to a total of 75 ECTS credits, incl. the thesis, as well as a Master's minor (upper secondary school elective) prescribed to 45 ECTS credits. (2) The main subject includes electives prescribed to 30 ECTS credits. (3) The Master's minor must build on the upper secondary school Bachelor's elective. (4) The programme concludes with a thesis prescribed to 30 ECTS credits. The thesis must be on a Film and Media Studies topic, and as far as possible link the main subject and the Master's minor, with the main emphasis on the main subject. The main subject's modules Module 1: Organizational and Institutional Analysis Competency objectives for the module The module will give students with: Knowledge and understanding of theories about the media's institutional conditions and development as well as their interaction with other cultural and social institutions differences between different types of media's institutional and organisational structures, including differences between mass media, network media and interpersonal media the actual structure, activity and regulation of film and media organisations in Denmark and globally the convergence and divergence industrially, technologically and culturally of film and media organisation. Skills to conduct analyses of the interaction between media, culture and society from institutional and organisational perspectives analyse specific film and media organisations, including their internal structures, working processes and external relationships analyse the organisations' communication and media strategies. Competences to reflect on the relevance of different methodologies for the analysis of media-organisational and institutional conditions put analyses of organisational conditions into a broader institutional perspective. Organizational and Institutional Analysis (constituent) Organisations- og institutionsanalyse (konstituerende) Activity code: HFMK03011E Type of instruction and work account adequately and critically for theories about the media's institutional and organisational conditions, including theories about the media's interaction with other cultural and social institutions analyse institutional and organisational aspects of the media and their interaction with culture and society evaluate and independently compare relevant methods for the analysis of the media's organisational and institutional conditions analyse organisations' media and communications strategies account for the media's institutional and organisational conditions in Denmark and globally The teaching consists of a combination of lectures, classroom instruction, student presentations and analytical exercises. The syllabus covers a total of 1,200 standard pages of social-science and humanities theory and methodology related to institutional and organisa- 12

13 tional analysis. Half of the specified literature is compulsory joint literature selected by the teacher, while the rest of the syllabus is chosen in relation to the agreed subject for the exam. No special syllabus form required. The lists are identical with the take-home assignment's bibliography, which must meet the syllabus requirements. Form of exam: Take-home assignment, optional subject, requiring active student participation. Assessment: Internal exam with one examiner, the 7-point grading scale. Active student participation is approved by the teacher. Extent: standard pages. The written exercise assignments must be 5-7-pages. Extent for group exams: See the following. Group exam: Both the exercise assignments and the final take-home assignment with optional subject may be done in groups. For the take-home assignment, the extent is standard pages for two participants, standard pages for three participants, and standard pages for four participants. In the case of exercise assignments, the lengthextent per assignment is 8-10 standard pages for two participants, standard pages for three partici-pants, and standard pages for four participants. Each individual s contribution must constitute a rounded unit that it is possible to identify individually and assess. The joint element must not exceed 25% of the total extent of the assignment. Exam in case of non-approved active student participation Form of exam: Take-home assignment, optional subject. Assessment: Internal exam with one examiner, the 7-point grading scale. Extent: standard pages. Group exam: The exam can only be taken individually. Special regulations To meet the requirement for active student participation, students must submit two compulsory written exercise assignments. If an assignment is not approved, the student concerned is given a deadline of seven days to rework it. If the reworked version is also rejected, the assignment is considered not approved. The teaching consists of a combination of lectures, classroom instruction, student presentations and analytical exercises. The syllabus covers a total of 1,200 standard pages about media and genre analysis. At least 500 standard pages must be general, theoretical methodical literature spread over different media and genres, while the rest of the syllabus is chosen in relation to the agreed subject for the exam assignment.
