Course Description A study of the UNIX operating system including multi-user concepts, terminal emulation, use of system editor, basic UNIX commands, and writing script files. Topics include introductory systems management concepts. Prerequisites COSC 1436 Course Goal Upon finishing this course, students are highly encouraged to take the LPI Linux Essentials Exam in order to earn the LPI Linux Essentials Certificate of Achievement Student Learning Outcomes The student will be able to: 1. Use basic UNIX commands; 2. Apply terminal emulation; 3. Use a system editor; 4. Manage individual user accounts and files; Learning Objectives Students will: Understand Linux as an operating system

6 ITSC 1307 page 6 As a student wanting to learn about the field of Computer Science Information Technology, it is your responsibility to read the Cisco Network Academy Linux Essentials (LPI), submit assignments on the due dates, study for the exams, participate in classroom activities( not apply for on-line class), and enjoy yourself while experiencing the real world of IT. As I believe that engaging the students in the learning is essential for teaching to be effective, you will spend the majority of class time involved in Laboratory Activities held via Cisco Academy. Student Assignments Assignments have been developed that will enhance your learning. To better understand a topic, you will be given assignments on key information that you will need to remember for your success in your career as IT professional. Lab Assignments 13 Lab Assignments that located within the Cisco Net academy (You will be registered, once the class starts) Chapter Quiz 16 Chapter Exams that will follow directly from Unix Unbounded and the LPI Linux Essentials course objectives. Instructor Requirements As your Instructor, it is my responsibility to: Provide the grading scale and detailed grading formula explaining how student grades are to be derived Facilitate an effective learning environment through class activities, discussions, and lectures Description of any special projects or assignments Inform students of policies such as attendance, withdrawal, tardiness and make up Provide the course outline and class calendar which will include a description of any special projects or assignments Arrange to meet with individual students before and after class as required To be successful in this class, it is the student s responsibility to: Attend class, participate in class activities Read and comprehend the textbook Complete the required assignments and exams: Ask for help when there is a question or problem Keep copies of all paperwork, including this syllabus, handouts and all assignments Program/Discipline Requirements HCC Grading Scale A = ; 4 points per semester hour B = 89 80:.3 points per semester hour C = 79 70:.2 points per semester hour

Students may be withdrawn administratively if they don t meet the State mandated attendance policy. You are responsible for materials covered during your absences. Class attendance is checked daily. Although it is your responsibility to drop a course for nonattendance, the instructor has the authority to drop you for excessive absences. For complete information regarding Houston Community College s policies on attendance, please refer to the HCC Student Handbook. If you feel that you cannot complete this course, you will need to withdraw from the course prior to the final date of ****, 2018 (check HCCS Academic Calendar for any updates). Students must withdraw by the withdrawal deadline in order to receive a W on a transcript. Final withdrawal deadlines vary each semester and/or depending on class length, please visit the online Academic Calendar, any HCC Registration Office, or any HCC advisor to determine class withdrawal deadlines. Be certain you understand HCC policies about dropping a course and consult with a counselor/advisor to determine if withdrawing is in your best interest. It is your responsibility to withdraw officially from a class and prevent an F from appearing on your transcript. Senate Bill 1231 and limits the number of W s a student can have to 6 classes over the course of their entire academic career. This policy is effective for students entering higher education for the first time in fall 2007 and subsequent terms. Withdrawals accumulated at any other Texas public higher education institution count toward the 6 course total. Withdrawals for certain circumstances beyond the students control may

8 not be counted toward the 6-drop limit. In addition, withdrawing from a course may impact your financial aid award or eligibility. Contact the Financial Aid Office or website to learn more about the impact of withdrawing on financial aid. ITSC 1307 page 8 HCC Policy on Students Living Out of The HCC Service Area HCC Policy Statement on Academic Honesty HCC Policy Statement-- Accommodations Students living out of the HCC service area during the semester in which they are enrolled at HCC in online classes need to make special arrangements to accommodate their needs. In the event the course requires onsite exams, it is the student's responsibility to obtain a proctor. This proctor must be someone in the testing center at a local community college or at a university. The proctor will need to provide a secure testing environment and possibly (depending on the course) a computer with Internet access. A valid picture ID must be presented to the proctor when taking the exam. All fees associated with proctoring are the responsibility of the student. Exams will be sent via fax, , or US mail directly to the proctor with instructions for administering the exams. This will be done at no cost to the student; however, the student WILL BE responsible for fees associated with returning the exams (including costs of overnight express, etc. to meet deadlines). The proctor approval form MUST be completed and approved at least 2 weeks prior to the first scheduled exam. A student who is academically dishonest is, by definition, not showing that the coursework has been learned, and that student is claiming an advantage not available to other students. The instructor is responsible for measuring each student's individual achievements and also for ensuring that all students compete on a level playing field. Thus, in our system, the instructor has teaching, grading, and enforcement roles. You are expected to be familiar with the University's Policy on Academic Honesty, found in the catalog. What that means is: If you are charged with an offense, pleading ignorance of the rules will not help you. Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements. Penalties and/or disciplinary proceedings may be initiated by College System officials against a student accused of scholastic dishonesty.
