11 Why Credential Recognition? Why does Alberta recognize foreign credentials? Engages industry in a standard review rather than a review of individual cases Assists in meeting industry needs for labour in a timely fashion Credential authenticity rigor Simplifies verification in high volume trades Cost effective Processing efficiency

12 Credential Recognition Recognized foreign credentials allows the tradesperson to work working in Alberta. If the tradesperson wants Alberta certification: work experience is not verified foreign credential is verified exam required Certificates recognized from: Other provinces/territories Canadian Forces United States the Republic of Ireland

13 Recognized Foreign Credentials The following foreign credentials are currently recognized: Six from the United States: Ironworker Electrician Steamfitter-pipefitter Boilermaker Welder Elevator Constructor Three from Ireland: HET- Truck & Transport Mechanic Plumber Carpenter

14 Department of National Defense Eleven DND Qualification Levels (QL) are recognized for Alberta trades: Automotive Service Technician Carpenter Cook Electrician Heavy Equipment Technician Machinist Materials Technician Millwright Plumber Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Welder

15 Foreign Credential Recognition Process Request comes from a credential-issuing regulatory authority. Review and evaluation is undertaken by: AIT Staff Provincial Apprenticeship Committee Industry Standards Committee (Board committee) AIT Board Recognition awarded by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board

16 Foreign Credential Recognition Mandatory Criteria Is the credential issued by a regulatory authority? Does the foreign credential represent completion of apprenticeship? Does the scope of trade align with Alberta s scope of trade?
