3 Overview Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), developed within the IEEE RPR Working Group, is a media access control (MAC) protocol working at Layer 2 of the OSI networking model and is independent of the physical layer. RPR operates on Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), Ethernet, and Dense Wave-length Division Multiplexing (DWDM). Combining high reliability (SDH self-healing) and low cost, high bandwidth, flexibility, and good scalability (Ethernet), RPR provides ring topology-based data-optimized bandwidth management and high-performance multi-service transmission solution. The H3C S9500E RPR series interface cards fully support RPR and have the following features: Efficient bandwidth utilization Rich Quality of Service (QoS) supports Topology auto discovery Topology protection and self-heeling Good reliability With these features, the RPR series are widely used in MANs and campus networks to provide low-cost and high-quality IP MAN solutions. The S9500E switches support the following types of RPR interface cards: LSR1DRSP2L1 2-port 2.5-Gbps RPR wire-speed interface card that supports POS encapsulation LSR1DRUP1L1 1-port 10-Gbps RPR wire-speed interface card that supports POS and Ethernet encapsulation modes Key features Distributed RPR The S9500E switches support the RPR standard. To avoid single-point failures due to card failures and enhance reliability, the RPR interface cards support distributed RPR. (Two RPR ports of an RPR node can be located on different subcards.) Efficient bandwidth utilization Packet stripping based on a matched destination address Unicast data packets are received by destination nodes and stripped from the ring network. Traditional SDH/SONET ring network technology strips packets based on the matched source address. In this case, a data packet runs around the ring a circle even if it has reached the destination. Spatial reuse mechanism The resources of the ring network can be used by different nodes and thus the accumulated bandwidth of the ring network is greater than the bandwidth capacity of a single link. In two non-overlapped areas, packets can be transmitted concurrently without mutual interference. When 1

4 transmitting packets concurrently in two overlapped areas, the total bandwidth is automatically managed through the fairness algorithm. Automatic bandwidth allocation The RPR feature does not require complex static bandwidth allocation as in SDH. RPR supports burst services and fast service deployment. No redundant bandwidth Different with the traditional SDH technology, RPR uses an inner ringlet and an outer ringlet to transmit data and to control information. The inner and outer ringlets serve as backup for each other to provide the auto-healing capability, without the need of reserving dedicated resources for link protection. Broadcast and multicast supported ly one copy of data packets is transmitted on the ring network. The destination node receives and forwards the packets while the source node strips broadcast and multicast packets from the ring network. Topology auto discovery and self-healing Each node on the RPR ring uses topology protection frames to advertise its topology and protection status information. Upon receiving the information, other nodes update their own topology databases. As a result, every node on the RPR ring is consistently aware of the topology information of the whole ring. RPR supports topology auto discovery and plug-and-play operation. Therefore, without being configured, a new node can obtain the topology information of the whole ring and the other nodes discover its presence. Using the ring structure, RPR has a powerful self-healing capability. Its protection mechanism can implement event detection, quick self-healing, and fast service recovery (within 50 ms) in case of optical fiber or node failures. RPR supports two protection modes: steering and wrapping. Rich QoS supports The RPR feature of the S9500E switches supports mapping COS values, EXP priority values or IP priority values to RPR packet priorities. Depending on your requirements, the RPR feature supports services of classes A, B, and C, and provides bandwidth-guaranteed and other DiffServe capabilities. In addition, with the fairness algorithm, RPR can ensure the fair traffic access of all nodes and efficient utilization of ring bandwidth, avoid ring congestion, and provide early detection mechanism. Rich ring selection mechanisms The RPR feature of the S9500E switches supports various ring selection options. By default, dynamic ring selection is adopted. After the topology gets stabilized, a node generates a ring selection table entry that gives a reachable and the shortest path to each of the other RPR nodes. The ring selection table entry remains unchanged as long as the topology is stable. However, you can configure static ring selection based on your requirements. Static ring selection has a higher priority than dynamic ring selection. 2

5 Flexible networking RPR ring networks now gradually find their applications in various network layers. However, a single ring cannot satisfy the network requirements of a large-scale network. The S9500E switches support interconnection of multiple RPR rings in intersection and tangency modes.
