4 ASSEMBLY PORTS 1. Place the router in its permanent location 2. Ensure that the router is easily accessible 3. Connect the power cable to the router first and then to a power outlet 4. Connect a CAT5 Ethernet cable to the blue WAN port of the router and the other end to the merchant s modem 5. Connect a CAT5 Ethernet cable to the Server POS station then to one of the router s yellow LAN ports 6. Connect a CAT5 Ethernet cable to each Workstation then to the router s yellow LAN ports 7. Connect a CAT5 Ethernet cable to each Harbortouch networked device (remote printers, KVS, caller ID) then to the router s yellow LAN ports Note: Do not connect any third party equipment to the router (see Network Policy below). CREATING A NETWORK MAP 1. Record how each device is connected to the router 2. Fill out the network map form 3. Be sure to record each device and its IP address 4. Be sure to include any switches, wall ethernet jacks, or feeds into the ceilings/floors/walls 5. A final network map will resemble the example below: Device IP Connection to Router Router N/A Server Straight run to router Workstation Straight run to router Workstation Goes through wall to Ethernet jack in the bar Remote Printer Feeds through the ceiling to the kitchen from the back office LABELLING AND INSTALLATION PHOTOS This is the final step of the installation once the router and all other hardware is installed. 1. Label each CAT5 wire to describe what devices it connects. Ex: Router to Workstation 1, Remote Printer 1 to Router, etc 2. Take a photograph of each installed device 3. Take a photograph of each network connection, including any switches, Ethernet wall jacks, or feeds into the ceilings/floors/ walls 4. Submit the photos digitally after the installation 2

5 CONFIGURATION DEFAULT SETTINGS 1. The router should be preset to the IP address It will have a password blocking the browser interface of the router. This password is unique to each router. Please contact your support team if you feel you need to access the browser interface of the router Note: Resetting the router to factory defaults is not recommended. If the router is reset, it will default to IP address , and will be accessible with username: admin, password: admin BROWSER INTERFACE Accessing the Browser Interface 1. Navigate to Windows Desktop 2. Open an Internet browser 3. In the address bar, type in the router s gateway/ip address (default: ) 4. You will be prompted for a username and password. Contact your support team for this information as it is unique to each merchant. Setting a Static/PPPoE Address 1. From the browser interface, navigate to Network > WAN 2. Select the WAN Connection type from the dropdown box 3. This should be Dynamic IP by default, and requires no configuration 4. If the merchant needs to set the WAN connection to any of the other connection types, they would need to contact their ISP (Internet Service Provider) 5. The ISP should provide all information needed for each connection type 3

6 CONFIGURATION (CONTINUED) BROWSER INTERFACE (CONTINUED) Changing the Default Gateway 1. From the browser interface, navigate to Network > LAN 2. Edit the IP Address field if the merchant needs their router set to another default gateway Note: Changing the Default Gateway may cause Harbortouch equipment to lose connection to the router. Do not change the default gateway without consulting your support team. Setting the DHCP Range 1. From the browser interface, navigate to Advanced Settings > DHCP > DHCP Settings 2. The start IP and end IP can be set here. This is the range of addresses that the router will assign to devices. Checking the DHCP Clients List 1. From the browser interface, navigate to Advanced Settings > DHCP > DHCP Clients List 2. This will display all devices on the router with a DHCP connection 4

7 TESTING BASIC NETWORK TESTING 1. Sign in to the POS Server station 2. Navigate to Windows desktop 3. Launch an Internet browser 4. If the browser displays the Harbortouch remote support page, the system has an internet connection 5. Sign into any other POS Workstations to ensure that they are not getting a Searching for Brain message 6. Send a test print to any remote printer 7. Test any KVS units or Caller ID units (See respective hardware guides for testing best practices). ADVANCED NETWORK TESTING 1. On the POS Server station, navigate to Windows desktop 2. Select Start 3. Select Run 4. Enter cmd and select Enter 5. This will launch the command prompt 6. In the command prompt enter ipconfig 7. This will display the IP address of the POS Server station 8. Ensure it is on the Harbortouch Network 9. Use the above steps to obtain the IP addresses of any other POS Workstations 10. On the POS Server station, select the command prompt 11. Type ping followed by a space and the IP address of the POS Workstation (ping xxx) 12. Confirm that the ping returns reply from 13. Repeat steps for all Harbortouch equipment connected to the router SPEED TEST 1. Navigate to Windows Desktop 2. Launch an internet browser 3. Navigate to the following website: 4. Select the nearest location on the list 5. Record the results 6. A merchant should have at a minimum download speed of 1mbps and a minimum upload speed of.5mbps 7. If the results are lower, advise the merchant that their internet connection is slow and may cause issues with the POS System 5

8 TESTING (CONTINUED) CONSISTENCY TEST Consistency tests should be used when there is a problematic connection or device on the network 1. Navigate to Windows desktop 2. Select Start 3. Select Run 4. Enter cmd and select enter 5. This will launch command prompt 6. Enter ping followed by a space, then the IP address of the device, followed by another space and -t 7. This will create a continuous ping; it will test the connection to the destination IP address indefinitely 8. Leave the ping running for at least 5 minutes 9. Select CTRL + C to end the ping 10. Record the loss percentage 11. This number represents how often the destination device was unavailable. Even a low loss percentage can indicate a problem with the network or the device TROUBLESHOOTING SEARCHING FOR BRAIN The Searching for Brain message indicates that the software cannot connect to the SQL database. The Brain is the application that broadcasts the SQL database onto the network for Harbortouch Hospitality 1. Ensure that the Brain application is running on the POS Server station (if the Brain application is not running, select and launch the Brain icon (picture of a globe) on the desktop) 2. Ensure the IP address listed on the Brain is valid. It should begin with xxx if it is connected to the Harbortouch router (if the Brain displays an IP address which begins with 127 or 169 the IP address is invalid) 3. Restart the Brain application 4. If the Brain still has an invalid IP address, verify the connection to the router 5. If the Brain has a valid IP address, launch the Workstation application on the Server Station and all Workstations 6. If a Workstation is unable to connect to the Brain, pursue the network testing steps outlined above to ensure the connection to the router and the POS Server Station 7. If a Workstation has a valid connection to the router, is able to ping the Server Station, and still generates a Searching for Brain message, contact your support team for further assistance 6

9 NETWORK POLICY INTERNET ACCESS Harbortouch does not permit access to the internet browser from the POS system. The POS system is supplied for business use and is not permitted to be used as a personal computer. All web access is blocked by the content advisor feature of Internet Explorer. If the merchant insists that web access on the POS system is vital to their business operations they can submit a request for an exception via to POSSupport@Harbortouch.com listing the websites that they want unblocked and why they are required. All requests are reviewed by management in the order they are received. 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE Harbortouch does not permit the installation of 3rd party software on the POS System. If the merchant insists that a particular piece of 3rd party software is vital to their business operations they can submit a request for an exception via to POSSupport@Harbortouch.com. The must list the software they want installed and why they require the software. All requests are reviewed by management in the order they are received. 3RD PARTY HARDWARE Harbortouch strongly recommends the use of a dedicated internet connection for the Harbortouch network. It is not recommended that third party networked devices are connected to the Harbortouch network. If necessary, the merchant can connect their own router to one of the LAN ports on the Harbortouch router then connect any other network devices to their router. It is not acceptable to connect any third party network device directly to the Harbortouch router. If any devices connected to the Harbortouch router cause interference with the functioning of the POS System the merchant will be asked to be remove the device from the network during standard troubleshooting procedures. Note: Security systems have been particularly problematic when connected to the Harbortouch router. Ensure the merchant does not have a security system on the same network as the Harbortouch equipment ** 7
