Who are we? RIPE NCC Located in Amsterdam Not for profit membership organisation One of five Regional Internet Registries RIPE Open community Develops addressing policies Working group mailing lists 2
The five RIRs 3
Services Members - IPv4/IPv6 resources and AS numbers - Training services Non-Members - RIPE Database - K-root name server - RIPE Atlas Project RIPE Meeting organisation 4
RIPE NCC Training Services Delivers training courses to members - membership fee covers course - 74 countries - almost 9500 members Face to Face Courses - LIR - Routing Security - IPv6 - RIPE Database Webinars 5
Interaction and Cooperation Surveys - after each course - yearly Free available training material Mailing lists Twitter (@trainingripencc) Conferences and seminars 6
IPv6 Course History Started July courses in attendees Half day course Video s Focus on awareness 7
IPv6 Course in 2013 Numbers increased significant - 43 courses - 29 countries - > 900 attendees Different demands in different countries Overall the focus changed to deployment Added more exercises and best current practices 8
IPv6 Course Topics IPv4 IPv6 Basics Transitioning Mechanisms Exercise: Addressing Plans IPv6 Allocations, PI and PA Assignments Deployment (SLAAC, DHCPv6, ND, security) Real life scenarios Tips 9
Todays Struggles Subnetting Waisting space What?! No NAT? Address Planning Deciding on a transition mechanism 10
Plans for Days advanced course New manual for end-site assignments in cooperation with Surfnet Webinar on IPv6 address planning Follow the demand! 11
MENOG/RIPE NCC IPv6 Roadshow Standalone workshop hosted by a government or enterprise organisation 3 or 5 days Hands-on technical training, working with industry partners Goals Ensure sustainable growth of the Internet in the region Help position governments to lead on IPv6 12
Getting IPv6
IP Address Distribution /3 IANA /12 RIR /32 LIR /48 /56 /48 End User Allocation PA Assignment PI Assignment 14
Getting an IPv6 allocation To qualify, an organisation must: - Be an LIR - Have a plan for making assignments within two years - 38% of Belgium LIRs don t have an IPv6 allocation Minimum allocation size /32 - Up to a /29 without additional justification - More if justified by customer numbers 15
Customer assignments Give your customers enough addresses - Up to a /48 For more addresses, send in request form - Alternatively, make a sub-allocation Every assignment must be registered in the RIPE database 16
Comparison IPv4 and IPv6 status IPv4 IPv6 ALLOCATED PA ALLOCATED-BY-RIR ASSIGNED PA ASSIGNED ASSIGNED PA AGGREGATED-BY-LIR SUB-ALLOCATED PA ALLOCATED-BY-LIR ASSIGNED PI ASSIGNED PI 17
Using ASSIGNED ALLOCATED-BY-RIR ASSIGNED /44 Status is ASSIGNED Minimum assignment size is a /64 For more than a /48, send a request form 18
Using AGGREGATED-BY-LIR ALLOCATED-BY-RIR AGGREGATED-BY-LIR assignment-size: 56 /34 /56 /56 /56 /56 /56 Can be used to group customers - broadband for example assignment-size = assignment of each customer 19
AGGREGATED-BY-LIR in the RIPE DB inet6num: 2001:db8:1000::/36 netname: Brightlife descr: Broadband services country: NL admin-c: BN649-RIPE tech-c: BN649-RIPE status: AGGREGATED-BY-LIR assignment-size: 48 mnt-by: BRIGHTLIFE-MNT notify: changed: source: RIPE 20
Using ALLOCATED-BY-LIR ALLOCATED-BY-RIR ALLOCATED-BY-LIR /36 AGGREGATED-BY-LIR assignment-size: 48 /40 Can be used for customers who expect large growth -or for your own infrastructure 21
Overview ALLOCATED-BY-RIR ALLOCATED-BY-LIR /36 ASSIGNED /44 AGGREGATED-BY-LIR assignment-size: 56 /34 AGGREGATED-BY-LIR assignment-size: 48 /40 /48 /48 /48 /48 /48 22
Provider Independent Assignments PI assignments in IPv6 Must have a contract with a member of RIPE NCC Minimum assignment size is a /48 More if there is justified need No sub-assignments are allowed Not even a single address for the connection If you have customers, you can not use PI for them 23
Some Statistics
IPv6 Ripeness Rating system: - One star if the LIR has an IPv6 allocation - Additional stars if: - IPv6 Prefix is announced on router - A route6 object is in the RIPE Database - Reverse DNS is set up - A list of all 4 star LIRs: 25
IPv6 RIPEness: 9497 LIRs 1 star 22% 2 stars 8% 3 stars 13% No IPv6 36% 4 stars 20% 26
IPv6 RIPEness Belgium: 149 LIRs 1 star 20% 2 stars 10% 3 stars 11% No IPv6 38% 4 stars 20% 27
AS Numbers Announcing IPv6 28
How About a 5th Star? Is IPv6 address space in actual use? Need a metric that is hard to fake Different measurements for different networks Content providers Access providers 29
5th Star for Content All the websites for 1 LIR on the Alexa 1M list How many are available over IPv6 Higher ranking sites weigh more If at least 2%of all weighted content is available over IPv6, the LIR gets listed 30
Example: Belgium Out of 30 LIRs with four stars, 12 qualify for five stars 31
