3 Aeronautical Telemetry Telemetry: The process of measuring at a distance. Aeronautical telemetry: The process of making measurements on an aeronautical vehicle and sending those measurements to a distant location for analysis Aeronautical telemetry is the primary method used to monitor the performance of a system under test. Control Room Monitors Telemetry Range Ground Station Receives Telemetry Test Article Broadcasts Telemetry Vibrations Velocities If it is ORANGE it is flight test instrumentation The four basic reasons for using aeronautical telemetry during testing: (1) Test efficiency. (2) Safety of flight. Pressures (3) Expansion of the test article s flight envelope (reducing the number of required flights) (4) Preservation of data. 5 Aeronautical Telemetry PCM Telemetry IRIG Part 5 PCM is still in use 51 years later. Used to support most DoD test programs during that time. Serial Streaming Telemetry (SST) One-way broadcast to the ground. No command channel to the test article instrumentation. INET s goal is to repeat the success of PCM.
