SESSION G.1 CONVERGING LIVE AND VIRTUAL ARCHITECTURES FOR TRAINING, TEST AND EVALUATION Common Open Architecture for Test and Training Airborne Instrumentation Packages Presenter: Rob Scott
OBJECTIVE Compare Test vs Training missions with application of live instrumentation in a common, open architecture Describe an implementation of common hardware to support live test and training applications Application of the open architecture to a Live, Virtual, Constructive scenario to enhance training effectiveness 2:Date May 12, 2011
CRIIS OV1 Test For Official Use Only Operational View Training Miniaturized Internal Mounts 4x Data Throughput Improvement Software Communication Architecture Sub meter positional tracking accuracy Range Instrumentation Waveform (RIW) Capability Updated EncryptionTechnology (MILS U-TS/SAR) RIW Training Infrastructure Standardized Protocols Open Interfaces Improved Reliability Threat Systems Test Ground Subsystem (TENA) Handheld Tracking Capability Ground Station/ Live Monitoring (TENA) Debrief Station 3:Date May 12, 2011 Test Instrumentation 3 Workshop AAC/PA #
TEST VS TRAINING OBJECTIVES Operational Test Equipment performance evaluation Independent TSPI and other sensors as required High data rates, secure, spectrally efficient communication DoD Network e.g. JMETC / SIPRNET Training Focus on operator performance (Live or Virtual) Tactical communications do not support virtual/constructive traffic Need for a common, interoperable network/data per security policy DoD Network e.g. JMETC / SIPRNET Virtual / Constructive Simulation; Real Time Casuality Assessment 4:Date May 12, 2011
TEST / TRAINING COMMON ATTRIBUTES Joint Operations Coalition Operations Encrypted communication Tactical scenarios DoD network interoperability Tethered / Untethered operation Spectral efficiency Platform agnostic Non-intrusive DIACAP certification Live Instrumentation DoD Network e.g. JMETC / SIPRNET Virtual / Constructive Simulation; Real Time Casuality Assessment Modular Open System Approach (MOSA) can be applied to the entire system; MOSA tenets reduce life cycle cost 5:Date May 12, 2011
AIRBORNE IMPLEMENTATION Pod mounts to an external AIM 9 or AIM 120 missile launcher 2-box Internal Mount and a Remote I/O Panel (e.g. JSF, F-22) 1-box IM fits in the F/A-18 Ammo Bay Door and a Remote I/O Light Pod Pod 2-Box Internal Mount 1-Box Internal Mount Heavy Pod 6:Date May 12, 2011
GROUND SUBSYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION Ground Subsystem has three components Remote Ground Station (up to 16): Dual antenna datalink coverage w/ growth to ground and shipboard applications Central Control Center contains encryption, forwarding and filtering to the correct enclave by mission and classification level Mission Room Equipment (up to 16): System high user interface to perform live monitor, and post mission processing via a TENA interface Mission Room Equipment Central Control Center Remote Ground Station(s) 7:Date May 12, 2011
COMMON AIRBORNE HARDWARE External Interfaces MIL-STD-704 aircraft power ANSI FC-PH Fibre Channel (2) IEEE Base-T Ethernet Redundant MIL-STD-1553 interfaces Internal Mount Configuration Interfaces GPS antenna I/O IAW ICD-GPS-200 Provides dual HT-DLT antennas Remote panel (recorder, status) Attributes Comprehensive environmental qual Configurable common modules Dual antenna datalink, 100+ entities Supports high dynamics Low observable aircraft 8:Date May 12, 2011 UMBILICAL P/A DRIVER NOSE CONE ASSEMBLY TSPI P/A BOOST ECU IMU MODEM POWER CONVERTER A TUBE ASSEMBLY RAIL ASSEMBLY REMOVABLE MEDIA DEVICE BATTERIES PIU POWER CONVERTER B CABLE JUNCTION BOX
APPLICATION UNIQUE SOFTWARE Test Tailorable mission configuration interface Accurate Time, Space, Position Information (TSPI) post processing Training Real Time Casuality Assessment software Weapons effects, Threats, and Counter Measures Mission profile support (e.g. range rules, rearm/rebirth, etc.) Real Time Kill Notification Live Monitor / Debrief (After Action Review) capability Configuration executive for efficient setup/monitoring of a large number of mission participants MOSA supports test/training applications via software 9:Date May 12, 2011
ARCHITECTURE / IMPLEMENTATION SATISFIES COMMON ATTRIBUTES Enables Joint and Coalition interoperability on 4 th and 5 th Generation aircraft as allow by security policy 4 channel, U-TS/SAR, Multiple Independent Level Security with Secure Bypass allows data sharing between enclaves FIPS NIST Certified and/or Type 1 encrypted communication Remote Ground Station is unclassified during operation All roles not required to be cleared at the highest level SCA compliant data link provides enhanced data transfer flexibility, control, and increased data capacity Supports tethered and untethered operation Spectrally efficient communication Ad hoc networking / waveform design to support high dynamics 10:Date May 12, 2011
LIFE CYCLE COST COMPARISON Clean sheet design is an open architecture promotes the lowest life cycle cost for airborne Test and Training Breaks the mold of incremental upgrades for good enough which ultimately costs more over the life cycle One logistics tail to manage/support Comprehensive system security approach includes consideration of open interface definitions to facilitate upgrades over time Rockwell Collins has been fielding systems to support high assurance missions with a MOSA for over 10 years Typical cost of reused system capabilities by incremental functionality is generally 25% of the initial investment Common design for growth, upgradability and obsolescence management for the expected 25-year service life 11:Date May 12, 2011
Live, Virtual, Constructive Training Demo Demonstrated at I/ITSEC 2010 Virtual Pilot View Live Pilot View Forward Air Controller View 3D Single Operational Picture 2D Map Inset 12:Date May 12, 2011
Certification event at I/ITSEC 2010 Rockwell Collins was demonstrating LVC Training in a Close Air Support mission scenario The story of JTAC certification USAF JTACs asked about the applicability to night currency training per the Joint Publication Mission scenario was reconfigured in 30 minutes Night time currency certification completed Rockwell Collins demonstrated capability to train and qualify troops at home stations while connected to Live assets at other locations 13:Date May 12, 2011
CONCLUSION Rockwell Collins has applied a MOSA to instrumentation supporting Test and Training missions to lower life cycle cost Implementation of the architecture has demonstrated growth to enhanced Live, Virtual, Constructive fidelity The common, configurable system is packaged in multiple configurations for application to 4 th generation (pod) and 5 th generation (embedded) platforms System integration of all configurations to ensure interoperability with Joint and/or Coalition partners as allowed by security policy 14:Date May 12, 2011
