Service providers are basing their 100GE deployments on; Port prices (Is 100G port price/bit cheaper than 10G?) Price parity is a moving target Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Means more than port price only it also accounts for limitations of parallel 10G systems To get 100G of usable BW on Nx10G LAG takes N>10 100G improves Opex and traffic engineering Availability of 100GbE router interfaces Seamless router-transport interworking 100GE Deployment Strategies Service Providers EENYC 2012 Confidential & Proprietary Information of VeEX Inc. 14
100G Deployments Existing and Greenfield Networks 100GE on Existing Networks Objective: Expand capacity and datacenter interconnect using 100G concentrators 100G improves cost efficiency (CAPEX/OPEX) compared to 10x10G channels Reuses existing DWDM 10G Delivers 100G performance at 10G effort 100GE Greenfield Networks: Objective: Scale and relieve capacity exhaustion Lowers cost, power & footprint requirements while providing higher capacity (8.8 Tb/fiber pair) Enables better performance and simpler operation (single 100G wave is easier to manage than 10x10G channels) Allows for fast adaptability to network reconfigurations and faster restoration time Improves reach and lowers costs in networks without dispersion-compensating modules and with fewer optical-to-electrical-to-optical conversions EENYC 2012 Confidential & Proprietary Information of VeEX Inc. 15
Converged Backbone and IP Offload 100G Deployments (continued) Converged Backbone & IP Offload IP offload of datacenter transit traffic and end-to-end integration of optical and IP. Reduces number of core routers and transponders by having the OTN/photonic switch handle transit traffic Provides better bandwidth filling at router level (100GE solves link aggregation group issues) Reduces network CAPEX, lowers OPEX, enables faster and resilient end-to-end provisioning EENYC 2012 Confidential & Proprietary Information of VeEX Inc. 16
Field Test Requirements Current Deployments Optical and Data Modulation Analysis OSNR measurement and central wavelength validation PMD (polarization mode dispersion) and CD (chromatic dispersion) Data modulation analysis; QPSK and DP-QPSK Client Interface Requirements Physical layer; injection of PCS layer errors and alarms, skew measurements, and CAUI validation CFP qualification; these tests are dependent on CFP module features Ethernet and IP (IPv4 and IPv6) full line rate testing Verification of end-to-end Ethernet/IP traffic at different frame sizes and traffic profiles. OTN OTU4 testing: 100GE within a ODU4 frame The good old RFC2544 is surprisingly the methodology of choice at this early stage of deployments EENYC 2012 Confidential & Proprietary Information of VeEX Inc. 17
Near Future Field Test Requirements Routed environment testing Simple Ping and ARP verification 100GE router wrap testing for the validation of this equipment before installing End-to-end testing between 100GE-100GE interfaces or 100GE to 10GE, etc. Automation in the test procedure Multi-Service Testing The existing single-stream full line rate testing will be complemented or replaced with multiple streams or multiple services testing The need for several independent traffic flows with configurable parameters such as frame size, traffic profile, frames/sec, layer (layer 2 and/or layer 3 mix) Y.1564 will be required Essentially the testing done now on 1GE and 10GE services will be required on 100GE as it matures EENYC 2012 Confidential & Proprietary Information of VeEX Inc. 18

XO Communications 100G Technology and Operational Considerations Presented by: Steve Nocella, Executive Vice President Network Operations
100G Technology Considerations 100G CFP modules typically have two(2) interfaces, SR10 or LR4. The more cost effective SR10 interface is optimized for data center application and is limited to short distances. LR4 delivers much better reach, but at a cost premium. Signal Cable Connector Reach Power Benefit SR10 10X10Gbps multi mode ribbon Multifiber Push-On (MPO) 100m/150m 6 Watts Lower cost LR4 4x25Gbps single-mode duplex LC / SC 10km 20 Watts Longer reach CFP Form-factor Size and power halved with CFP2 Additional space and power improvement with CFP4 LR4 CFP4 Copyright XO Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. XO, the XO design logo, and all related marks are registered trademarks of XO Communications. 21
100G Operational Considerations LR4 / SR10 client interfaces Distance limitations SR10 preferred due to lower cost over LR4 SR10 limited to 100m Termination MPO panels Are they needed? Where is the test access point? Can not obtain light level readings from the CFP Sub-interface testing will require breakout cables to troubleshoot individual optical lanes or specialized equipment for concurrent 10 lane testing. Either solution is an added cost and resource requirement 100G circuit testing Current generation of portable test sets are very expensive Centralized testing platforms are optimized for <10G services Copyright XO Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. XO, the XO design logo, and all related marks are registered trademarks of XO Communications. 22
100G Financial Considerations Service providers will benefit from economies and scale of using large 100G facilities, but the cost of hardware is still too high. Greater number of deployments will result in a significant improvement of hardware costs. SR10 vs. LR4 Interfaces Operationally, LR4 is more desirable, yet the cost premium is significant LR4:SR10 CFP cost is currently around 5:1 Cost premium for a 100G circuit endpoint including LR4 CFP and transponder is >30% 100G service is beginning to reach compelling price points relative to nx10g Current equipment costs are around 9x10G to 1x100G Operational improvements help justify the costs, but we still need further improvement for widespread deployment Costs will need to reach 6 or 7 x 10G for much wider adoption Copyright XO Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. XO, the XO design logo, and all related marks are registered trademarks of XO Communications. 23
Summary 100G is real today And although technical, operational and financial challenges exist Many carriers around the globe are actively upgrading their networks In 2012, XO lit first 100G native long-haul DWDM system. Today, XO has two(2) diverse, coast-to-coast 100G long haul systems in operation. XO has turned up our first 100G customer and internal 100G network Copyright XO Communications, LLC.
