6 Why is WDM becoming more attractive for Fibre Channel and Ethernet? Sheer volume of traffic for both protocols Requiring a lot more high speed pipes than in the past In many areas, it can be difficult to find Fibre Channel Private line Expensive to convert and carry over IP Multiplies the number of fiber pairs that need to be made available Higher speed transport/wdm systems are finally coming into being 10G seems to be the primary aggregate transport speed for now and likely will be for some time But, we do need a bigger carrier to multiplex them into The cost of 40G has been an inhibitor in the past Page 6
