1 16G Fibre Channel SAN Connectivity Today, 16G Fibre Channel is the traffic protocol of choice for SANs (storage area networking). The ability to synchronously replicate data between data centers is key to the successful implementation of a remote back or disaster recovery policy. Smartoptics has been at the forefront of SAN Fibre Channel connectivity for data centers and were first to market with 4G embedded CWDM solutions in Smartoptics has continued to provide simple, low cost ISL connectivity between geographically separated sites for 16G channel traffic. With just a few simple building blocks: through multiplexers passive or managed, transponders and 16G ER transceivers, all connectivity types are supported. All applications SFP/SFP+ directly in switch Layer 1 Brocade tested and approved No additional latency, ISL trunking possible Green data center solutions Single channel connectivity When using Brocade switches, Smartoptics offers end to end SAN extension solutions uniquely qualified and supported at the Layer 1 level. If a single channel of 16G connectivity is required then a 16G transceiver connects in to the switch at each site. The line fiber is connected to these transceivers and a single channel connection is established. Up to 40km
2 Cost-effective embedded communication Embedded solutions are based on a passive C/ approach where the 16G C/ transceiver is embedded in the FC switch and the output is connected through an LC patch cord to a C/ multiplexer. With a passive multiplexer, up to 80 independent ISLs can be connected over a dark fiber. In this way fiber operating expenses can be drastically reduced for communication up to 25 kilometers. Embedded multiplexers drastically reduce fiber operating expenses up to 100 kilometers. Passive networking with C/ transceiver connected directly in to the switch and passive multiplexer Passive C/ multiplexer Up to 25km 2 CWDM channels 80 channels Managed networking with C/ transceiver connected directly in to the switch and to an intelligent multiplexer Managed embedded networking Should the signals need to be monitored (i.e. laser on/off, send/receive levels, fiber cut, etc), Smartoptics intelligent multiplexer family,, operates in exactly the same plug and play way. Unlike an ordinary passive multiplexer, has a monitoring system that offers a common view of the optical channels. A unique managed passive multiplexer. Up to 25km 32 channels Passive C/ multiplexer Managed networking with transceiver connected directly in to the 16G FC switch and to an intelligent distance extending multiplexer. Managed embedded networking with integrated distance extension Should longer distances be required, has integrated transmit and receive amplification and dispersion compensation. A variable optical attenuator () automatically equalizes the signals on the transit and receive lines as they enter the EDFAs. The result is 16G point to point connectivity up to 100 kilometers with the same plug and play experience of a passive multiplerxer with auto traffic commissioning. Up to 100km 32 channels * EDFA can be set to preamp, booster amp or both preamp and booster amp. * DCM can be set to compensate the dispersion on the transmit and receive signals. 2.
3 Longer distance managed networking The family has inline amplifiers that allow for longer distance networking. For 16G FC, each additional inline amplifier increases the distance by 100 kilometers. Site C Site D xwdm signals act as if it was running over its own fiber pair, no switch features are lost, no special configurations are required. 80km 80km 80km Inline amplifiers used to increase distance up to 80 kilometers between hops Embedded solutions the purest approach to SAN networking Embedded networking is simple and offers significant cost (capex and opex) savings. Because the C/ transceiver is connected directly in the switch, the signal is kept purely optical in the physical layer significantly reducing latency. All the solutions described above are embedded. A C/ signal through a C/ Multiplexer acts in the same way as if it was running over its own fiber pair. This means that none of the features of the switch are lost and no special configurations are required. If a transponder is used to connect the 850nm client signal to C/, the switch usually has to be configured in a way that restricts some of the features in the switch. When using an embedded C/ solution, the port works in its default configuration so there s no need for new complex management systems. The following illustrations demonstrate the true advantage of the embedded solution. All the information are standard commands and provided by the Brocade management system. 3.

6 Active transponder based xwdm solutions For other Fibre Channel Switch vendor scenarios, where Smartoptics and other third-party vendor transceivers cannot be connected directly to the switch, a transponder-based system provides an alternative approach to intelligent SAN networking. The external transponder acts as a media converter, converting the 850nm output signal from the FC switch into a C/ signal. This approach provides a suitable solution when connecting Cisco equipment, among other types. Transponder solutions provide an alternative approach to intelligent SAN networking when C/ transceivers cannot be connected directly in tot he FC switch The Smartoptics T U 8 channel transponder module converts 8 x 16G short range 850nm FC signals into C/ signals. These signals can then be connected through a multiplexer on to a common dark fiber. If additional channels are required, multiple T-1608s can be combined. For longer distances, an multiplexer with built-in distance extension can be used. For even longer distance networking, the T-1608 can be combined with and inline amplifiers. One drawback of this transponder approach, compared to the embedded scenario, is that it adds an additional level of complexity. Apart from the media conversion from 850nm to C/ when an embedded approach isn t possible, there is no advantage when it comes to the capacity of the system. It is the same as an embedded xwdm system. From a functionality point of view however, the T-1608 transponder can add FEC and lossless encryption if the FC switch does not support these functions. Using such an approach does mean that the switch usually has to be put in to R_Ready mode which restricts some of the features in the switch. 850nm 850nm Using a transponder solution to convert an 850nm client signal to. 400km Transponder Transponder Solutions for every need Smartoptics has solutions for all types of connectivity, whether it is based on embedded or transponder based networking. The unique intelligent distance extending multiplexer extends the usable range of embedded networking and maintains the benefits of operating at the pure physical layer. Advantages which also benefit the switch usage by not having to be run in R_Ready mode. Regardless of the challenges faced in the network, Smartoptics has a suitable solution.
