3 The NBN: what is it? 4 The NBN: what does it mean for Tasmania? Tasmania is to host the initial roll out of the NBN. Tasmania will play a crucial role in defining how the NBN will be designed, implemented and ultimately utilised across the rest of Australia. The scale and complexity of the project is already attracting national and international attention ti to Tasmania The NBN will play a defining role in shaping the social and economic future of the state. The NBN roll out in Tasmania is expected to create a minimum of jobs over the life of the project It is estimated t that t between $600 million and $800 million will be invested in the roll out alone. A conservative estimate suggests a further $500 million investment will be made in establishing support infrastructure and aligning business functions to the NBN.

5 The NBN in Tasmania is underway 1. The Tasmanian Government s existing optical fibre network will be extended over a period of five years to pass approximately 200,000 homes and businesses throughout the state. 2. The first stage of this work, due for completion in the second quarter of 2010, involves extension of the fibre backbone: from Cambridge via Midway Point to Triabunna from Port Latta to Smithton from George Town via Scottsdale to St Helens. 3. The first three towns to receive fibre-to-the premises distributed via local networks due towards mid 2010 will be: Midway Point Smithton Scottsdale

7 The ubiquitous opportunity Reaching 90% Fibre to The Premises connectivity by 2014 will position Tasmania as the ideal location for global digital corporations to demonstrate new services and applications including: Smart Grid technology Virtual in-home care for the chronically ill and elderly Anywhere, anytime learning Digital content storage repositories Hi definition IPTV and Video on Demand services Virtual retailing experiences, and Augmented reality based tourism experiences

11 Digital Futures: a five-year vision Tasmania will become the most connected and digitally progressive place in the world where: Virtual services parity exists between urban and regional Tasmania Tasmania leads the nation in digital literacy and participation rates The Digital Economy supports growth in jobs and investment Tasmania s culture, heritage and industry are globally accessible Tasmania leads the nation in digital innovation and utilisation Digital technology underpins sustainable social and economic activity across the state, and Digital driven efficiency supports growth in demand for public services

12 Building awareness and demonstrating ideas Premier David Bartlett has announced the State Government will provide $1 million in funding to assist key industry groups to take advantage of the National Broadband Network. These include. The funding is to be provided to the TCCI, the TFGA, the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania and the Small Business Council of Tasmania to: Develop education and awareness programs for their members; Build capacity within each sector to ensure business is well equipped to take advantage of emerging opportunities; and Develop pprototypes and demonstration models for innovative products and services that are now possible as a result of the NBN

14 Next steps: The Premier has announced the implementation of the Master Plan and the establishment of the Digital Futures Advisory Council. The Council members will be announced in the coming weeks. Next steps include: Premier to address the Realising Our Broadband Future Forum in Sydney on 11/12/09 Establishment of the Digital Futures Office in DEDTA Convening of the Digital Futures Steering Group Launch of an EOI for project proposals that align with the two-year activity plan Commence a state-wide educations and awareness program starting in the Smart Towns Establish a Digital Futures web site and provide a downloadable copy of the Master Plan
