4 Digital This breakout session will look at the deployment of infrastructure to boost productivity and to deliver improved connectivity to services and markets, together with the promotion of digital skills to allow business and communities to maximise the benefits from the infrastructure.

5 Digital Current position Broadband connectivity is now an essential requirement for the majority of people 14% of adults have not been on-line within the last three months 25% of adults do not have the five basic digital skills More and more services are now only available on-line A business that goes on line grows 200% faster and has twice as many jobs

9 Digital Economic opportunity Digital Borderlands will help the area capitalise on each of the three identified strategic opportunities: Developing a future-proofed knowledge-based rural economy: enhanced Digital infrastructure will underpin new business models that operate competitively in and across sparsely populated areas and rely on data to add value. Strengthening trade across borders: improved digital infrastructure will allow business to trade more expansively and to participate in longer more integrated supply chains which span across traditional boundaries Developing our offer to the world: better digital connectivity will position Borderlands to attract investors and visitors from around the world to capitalise on our future-proof communication technology.

10 Digital Investment proposal The proposal for Digital Borderlands has three strands of direct investment: 1. Complete super-fast broadband to properties that don t yet have access the superfast strategy is for full fibre to future proof the network Superfast cost rise exponentially which means innovative solutions will be required for the last 1% 2. Deploy full-fibre broadband to critical strategic sites and market towns Designed to encourage the commercial provision of full fibre broadband, in particular to SMEs Encourage innovative use of technology that takes advantage of 100Mbps + fibre services to increase productivity 3. Extend 4G coverage further into remote rural areas Working with the Home Office to ensure the emergency service network extended area services are made commercially viable Infill will include looking at key tourist sites, such as Hadrian s Wall

11 Digital Investment proposal There are two complementary strands of activity to align with Digital Borderlands: 1. Pilot 5G mobile locations to support trials of new technology and applications Agri-tech opportunities e.g. using 5G to monitor livestock by drones Tourism opportunities e.g. using 5G for augmented reality applications 2. Digital skills development to help businesses and learners capitalise on the opportunities of the new infrastructure. Training for business to support increases in their productivity and performance Training for residents to ensure they can access services on-line

12 Digital Case for investment Digital Borderlands will help the area resolve its three headline challenges: BIG Challenge 1 Narrowing the Productivity Gap: digital infrastructure is vital to securing a larger base of higher value economic activities which are needed to close our growing productivity gap on the UK BIG Challenge 2 Increasing the Working Age Population: young people and families will be encouraged to locate and work from the Borderlands area, secure in the knowledge that digital infrastructure allows them to engage with work opportunities across the globe from their home. BIG Challenge 3 Delivering Inclusive Growth: new ways of working and learning driven by digital tech will open up new opportunities for people who have been traditionally found it difficult to engage

What evidence is there of demand for improvements in digital infrastructure from businesses, visitors, residents? What are the benefits from improvements in digital infrastructure and how can these be maximised?
