An Architecture for Future Configurable Millimeter Wave Networks Hang Liu
Outline Motivation and Industrial Relevance Project Objectives Approach and Previous Results Future Work Outcome and Impact [2]
Motivation & Relevance Conventional spectrum below 3 GHz is experiencing severe shortage and cannot keep up with the exponential traffic growth. Millimeter wave (mmwave) communications, particularly operating at frequencies between 20 and 300 GHz orders of magnitude more available spectrum in the mmwave band multiple gigabit-per-second data rates 1000 times capacity Greater directivity, narrower transmit beams, better interference resistance, and spectral efficiency. Strong Industry interests and activities Candidate for next-generation (5G) cellular networks IEEE ad/WiGig DoD applications, next-generation aerial directional data links and networking [3]
Configurable mmwave Small Cell Networks This project aims at developing novel techniques to enable software-defined configurable mmwave small cell networks. mmwave configurable antennas and their impact on system performance. Multipath routing: develop a new protocol that allows a mobile device to establish multiple connections to the core network over several base stations and device-to-device transmission to address the challenges of unreliable and highly directional mmwave links as well as frequent shadow fading and handoffs in mmwave small cell networks. mmwave small cell network resource sharing: develop network sharing strategies and resource management algorithms using game theory and machine learning Potential other funding to leverage the research: Pending NSF proposal (in collaboration with NYU-Poly and other institutions) Industry collaboration [4]
SDN-based mmwave Small Cell Networks Controller Gateway Internet Configurable mmwave Small Cells SDN Core Network Dense and dynamic mmwave small cell networks Irregularly placed cell sites Unpredictable inter-cell interference and highly variable loads Complex to manage, Expensive to deploy Software defined radio and network alleviate these issues. [5]
Multipath Routing and Link Establishment mmwave characteristics present challenges Signal attenuation, limited scattering, blockage effect Frequent link breakage Beamforming, link establishment and tracking Core Network Dedicated relays or mobile devices as relays Multipath with multibeam adaptive antenna One beam for data transmission, and another for scanning and backup path establishment and tracking. periodic scanning of the angular space, tracks the angle of transmitted and received beams. Switch from one connection to another in an orderly manner. [6]
Multipath Routing and Link Establishment Core Network Path selection In LTE networks, a mobile device is able to use multicell beamforming to increase its throughput. In mmwave networks, an individual path may have a very high data rate, but unreliable and opportunistic. Path selection is based on achievable high reliability Minimize interruptions and outage duration under the handoff and shadow fading. Define a composite link selection metric considering Link break probability based on history Beam alignments and channel conditions w i = ( 1 1 p i s i r i ) [7]
Multipath Routing and Link Establishment Core Network Controller Path switching Leveraging the separate control and data planes in our SDN architecture, Discover and track the angle of transmitted and received beams for the active and backup paths. When blockage or handoffs happen, the original IP point of attachment may be maintained (may be too time-consuming to switch it over), layer 2 data flow will be switched to the other base station with a good link to the destination that will forward data to the destination. Use a reliable but low bandwidth lower frequency channel for the control plane, keeping the mmwave channels for the bandwidth-demanding data plane. [8]
Resource Sharing Dense and dynamic mmwave cellular networks Complex to manage, Expensive to deploy Controller Legacy 2 Legacy 1 Gateway Interne t Legacy 3 Configurable mmwave Small Cells SDN Core Network mmwave infrastructure can be virtualized and shared by multiple entities. How to allocate resource to different entities? [9]
Game Theory Analysis mmwave small cell network consists of M mmbss M = 1, 2, m, M L legacy macrocell networks L = {1, 2, l, L} that may lease mmwave network for offloading. A legacy network needs to pay the usage of the mmwave network. Stackelberg Game: mmwave network is the leader. Decide the unit price for its usage per BS Legacy networks are the followers, Decide the amount of mmwave BS usage time to buy based on the price. Using backward-induction, assume the leader knows the followers best response functions, then determine the unit price. [10]
Legacy Network Utility Optimization Legacy network l decides whether to use its macrocell BS or lease a slice of a mmwave BS to serve its mobile user, MU l,,i s 0 Utility of MU l,,i : u l,i = ωf α l,i r l,i + β m,l,i r m,l,i, R l,i C m β m,l,i β m,l,i : the time duration that mmwave BS m sends data to user MU l,,i, α l,i : the duration that legacy network l s BS to send the data to user MU l,,i R 0 l,i : the traffic demand (s) r l,i, r m,l,i : the data rates of legacy and mmwave BS. C m : unit price to use mmwave BS m. [11]
Legacy Network Utility Optimization Legacy network l will maximize its total user utility, u l (T l ) = max α l,i,β m,l,i n l M m=1 i=1 ul,i n s.t. l n i=1 αl,i 1 and l i=1 βm,l,i t m,l, m M, l L. mmwave sharing matrix T with [T] m,l = t m,l, where t m,l is the time duration that legacy network l uses the mth mmwave BS radio interface. Given the response function of the legacy networks, the mmwave network determines the unit price to maximize its utility function: L U s = l=1 C T l. L S.t. l=1 t m,l 1 [12]
The utility of legacy network The utility of SCN Legacy Network Utility Optimization Preliminary results: No cooperation With cooperation No cooperation With cooperation The number of small cell BSes The number of small cell BSes (a) The utility of legacy network (b) The utility of small cell network The utilities of legacy network and mmwave network with and without cooperative offloading. [13]
Outcome and Impact Protocol design and performance evaluation of software-defined configurable mmwave small cell networks. SDN based multipath routing will greatly improves the reliability and reduces disruptions to a user s connection. mmwave small cell network resource sharing algorithms provide insight for sharing strategies and resource management for joint optimization of the involved entities.
