3 Background DoD SATCOM currently uses a mix of TDM and proprietary IP Modems Would like to transition to an open, standards-based IP Modem Major impact on COCOMS, Services, Agencies & DISA DISA: Terrestrial backbone, DoD Teleports, DSCS, GBS DISA Involvement Recommendation to ASD NII for DVB-S2, RCS (star & mesh) along with encryption of signaling IP Modem standards developments Integrated tests of DVB-S, RCS and related technologies Implementation & integration (along with SPAWAR) of a RCS VSAT network in SWA this fall Plans to use RCS for two-way GBS 3

13 Wideband Gapfiller Satellite (WGS) Small SITs (Ka-band) with hubs at X-band are possible Bent-pipe transponder with multiple spots Several channels (125 MHz) with 48 sub-channels (2.6 MHz) per beam Independent sub-channel gain SITs require spoke/hub & spoke/spoke connections simultaneously Independent sub-channel gain is very useful for this requirement Must share the beam with other DoD users TWTA OBO is 3.5 db JNIMS must meet performance over WGS 13

16 Commercial Vs WGS Comparison WGS allows the use of 1m (vice 2.4m) antennas even in fairly rainy regions such as Korea Multiple beams and transponders are required for equivalent coverage Requires accurate ephemeris data to be made available at the hub (doesn t see its own downlink) 16
