19 Let s recap Let s not forget the environmental impact of the optical transport networks, open or otherwise Whether we architect, design, market, buy, deploy, destroy or analyze optical networks, we all have a role to play in saving the environment The current level of over-dimensioning, over-provisioning, forklifting and energy inefficiency is not sustainable we must think bigger Migrating functionality from silicon and discrete optics to silicon photonics will save space and energy We need more aggressive environmental targets in telecom it all starts with the service providers please select the environmentally friendly low eco-footprint products All networks are open, but some networks are more open than others. 19
