3 MCL-COLLECTION The MCL-Collection is a software suite designed to make programming your data collection application simple, in both the design and the deployment. It allows you to easily automate business management activities and is a preferred software solution when applications demand high performance, reliability, scalability, and a low cost of operations. MCL applications are easily optimized for speed, data accuracy, simplicity, reduced keystrokes and minimal training while offering instant, realtime or batch back-up data access for total flexibility across the wireless or wired network. MCL components: MCL-Designer offers easy development of complex wired, wireless LAN, and wireless WAN applications with limited programming knowledge. MCL-Net is a communication program for concurrent exchange of files and/or data records between the host system and devices using Ethernet/Internet (LAN), RF (WLAN), GSM/GPRS (WWAN). MCL-Link is a communication program offering wired exchange of files and/or data records and is used for sequential communication with one device at a time. (Point-to-Point) MCL-Client provides a thick client architecture, making the terminal an intelligent independent device allowing for always connected, casually connected, or standalone operation. MCL-Bridges provide a reliable and easy to use interface to SAP TM, BaaN or any ODBC compliant database. The certified SAP Bridge executes two-way data transfer providing self-reliance and independence at the device level. All MCL Bridges and communication programs operate on a layered approach, which means that MCL-Link or MCL-Net can use multiple bridges at the same time allowing an MCL device to communicate with, for example SAP, BaaN and Oracle all at the same time! MCL-Net MCL-Net is a communication program for wireless or Ethernet exchange of files and or data records between the host PC and MCL device. In essence MCL-Net acts as the go between ensuring that information passes between the MCL device and host system. Additionally, MCL- Net ensures real-time connectivity to enterprise systems making certain data is received from the device and accurately placed within the correct table, record and field, or forwarded to another legacy application. MCL-Net is licensed in specific quantities and handles up to a maximum of 62,500 devices. The license quantity determines the number of devices that can simultaneously access MCL-Net. It offers advanced features such as remote application updating and sophisticated methods for load balancing. It also enhances your wireless network by checking within range status (to the access point), and managing both data paths and network devices. MCL makes use of thick client architecture, specifically for AutoID applications in a real time environment. This provides faster response times, less network traffic, and will not timeout a device if there is a network connection problem. The thick client approach makes it possible to operate in a continuously or casually connected mode. For example, wireless MCL applications may send transactions immediately as they occur, or store data for transmission at another time. Track and manage device usage with MCL-Net, which can quickly enable or disable any of the networked MCL devices. Activity logs can be viewed on screen or written to a file for later review. WIRELESS SECURE COMMUNICATION MCL-Link MCL-Link provides support for wired communication via serial cable or modem and simple point-to-point Ethernet between the MCL device and host PC. Ideal for sequential communication MCL-Link easily and quickly passes applications, data files, images, or label formats between the device and host. MCL-Link communicates point-to-point, or with one device at a time, it can also exchange data with one device after the other in a sequential fashion. Hence, allowing many devices to exchange data with a single host PC running MCL-Link. Additionally, MCL-Link Multi-com can control up to 8 communications ports on the same host PC, meaning up to 8 devices can exchange data at the same time. MCL reduces the connection time between the device and host PC by only exchanging data, utilizing thick client architecture. This gives the best possible device response time and eliminates the need for a computer attached to your device to act as a local application host. MCL-Link can be used in a client/server mode, meaning that communication is initiated by the host PC or by your MCL device. For instance, the host PC, acting as the Server can send application or data updates to a specified MCL enabled device; or an MCL enabled device, acting as the Server may request an application or data update from the host PC. This latter mode of communications might be used by the device to routinely phone a main database, even dial a second phone number if the first is busy. Then check if a new file exists, if it does then the file is downloaded, if not then it simply hangs up. This architecture puts you in control of your application based on your individual environment requirements. 4 Supported Devices The MCL-Collection supports a broad range of devices from the most prestigious vendors in the Market. The list of vendors with MCL supported devices is continuously growing. A selection of the most talked about platforms is shown below. For further details check with your supplier and remember that the unique MCL Designer functionality will allows you to seamlessly move your application between MCL enabled devices. MCL Designer MCL-Designer is a rapid AutoID application development tool enabling technically oriented non-programmers to develop complex data collection applications. This highly intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides a tool for development of thick client/server applications for Batch, LAN (Ethernet/Internet), wireless LAN (RF ), and wireless WAN (GSM/GPRS) applications. These comprehensive communications modes, all within one tool, allows you to mix and match your mode of communication for each transmission based on your specific requirements. For instance, you may choose to use wireless LAN (802.11) while at your facility, but as soon as you leave, the device can automatically detect that it s out of range, and then automatically switch to wireless WAN (GSM/GPRS) for any further data transactions. Complex applications are created in a very short tome with the extensive use of dialogue boxes, radio buttons, drag-and-drop, cut-and-paste, screen viewer, and simulator features. The advanced Debugger tool, with line-by-line control and the Verifier tool are both unsurpassed in the industry for application testing. MCL-Designer automatically creates comprehensive application documentation at the click of a button. The output is in Rich Text format that is easily printed providing full documentation which can, for instance, be easily edited to create a User s Guide. MCL doesn t stop there, additional MCL-Designer plug-ins are available supporting SAP or BaaN Bridges and for text to speech and speech to text voice recognition applications. Not all MCL enabled devices are voice capable ) Cross Platform Support Easily convert applications from one operating system to another with only a few simple mouse clicks. Multiple Vendor Support The MCL-Collection supports a broad range of devices including PDT s and Printers, meaning it s only a few clicks away to convert your application from one device type to another. You will need the specific MCL-Designer for your chosen hardware vendor and then your existing projects will convert seamlessly with only minor screen reformatting required if anything. 6 What will you Need to purchase? To develop an application a user would typically use: 1. at least one copy of MCL-Designer to develop the end-user application; 2. at least one of either MCL-Link or MCL-Net, which depends on type and number of concurrent connections required and the type of communications. Note: typically if the application has multiple locations (e.g. spread out over several warehouses) then additional MCL-Link s or MCL-Net s are required at each location. However, a single MCL-Net copy could be run centrally on the corporate network (WAN ) and provide an equally robust solution for all sites. MCL-Net operates concurrent connections for wireless and Ethernet communications. It s sold in per connection bundles. MCL-Link operates with one device at a time for serial (RS-232) communication; MCL-Link 4 Com and MCL-Link 8 Com operate concurrently with up to 8 devices, but it requires 4 up to 8 serial or Ethernet ports on the host PC. 3. one MCL-Client licence is required for each device, and they are available as an individual license or in bundled quantities. Some devices come standard with an MCL-Client preloaded from the manufacturer.
