1 MODULE DETAILS MODULE PURPOSE PRE-REQUISITES MODULE, UNITS / CO-REQUISITES ASSESSMENT STRATEGY SUMMARY OF LEARNING OUTCOMES Module 6: Best Practice in Industrial Data Communications Nominal duration: 6 weeks (72 hours total time commitment) This time commitment includes the preparation reading, attendance at each webinar (1 hour plus minutes for discussion), and the time necessary to complete the assignments and further study. This module covers best practice in designing, installing, commissioning and troubleshooting industrial data communications systems. N/A To evaluate the achievement of the learning outcomes; written assignments, group projects and practical exercises are set. 1. Examine modern cabling solutions as well as methods of dealing with industrial environments 2. Troubleshoot serial communications networks (RS- 232/485) at the physical layer 3. Outline the basic purpose, structure and functionality of the TCP/IP, MODBUS Serial and DNP3 protocols 4. Troubleshoot MODBUS Serial at packet level 5. older ( first generation ) Industrial networks 6. later ( second generation ) Industrial networks i.e. field buses 7. newer ( third generation ) Industrial networks i.e. Ethernet-based field buses
2 Learning Outcome 1 Examine modern cabling solutions as well as methods of dealing with industrial environments Assessment Criteria 1.1 Examine the basics of: (a) Noise (b) Grounding (c) Shielding practices for industrial environments 1.2 Describe the Ingress Protection (IP) rating system 1.3 Outline the basic concepts of copper cabling for Industrial applications, with reference to: (a) Commonly used cable standards (b) Commonly used connectors (c) Grounding (d) Characteristic impedance (e) Termination (f) Transient protection 1.4 Outline the basic concepts of fiber cabling for Industrial applications. This includes: (a) Modes (multi-mode and single mode) (b) Graded Index (GI) fiber (c) Splicing methods Learning Outcome 2 Troubleshoot serial communications networks (RS- 232/485) at the physical layer Assessment Criteria 2.1 Examine the concept of serial asynchronous (byteoriented) data communication 2.2 Outline RS-232 operation with specific reference to: (a) Pin allocations (b) Static voltage levels (c) Signal waveforms
