1 COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: ITNW 2321 Networking with TCP/IP COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION Set up, configure, use, and support Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) on networking operating systems. INSTRUCTOR: Tony Santos OFFICE: Building S-100B OFFICE HOURS: View Current Office Hours CONTACT INFORMATION MAJOR COURSE REQUIREMENTS: This course has been divided into a Course Orientation on the first class meeting and four units as follows: A. TCP/IP Overview B. Network Access Layer Protocols C. Network Layer Protocols - IP and ICMP D. Network Layer Protocols - Subnetting, Supernetting E. Network Layer Protocols - Routing F. Application and Transport Layer Protocols G. Final Project In each indicated unit above the student will be given a lecture/demonstration and then be expected to perform the assignments for each unit. Each assignment will be demonstrated and explained so that the student can then attempt it. After each unit there will be a knowledge exam and a performance exam. Each exam is based on the information discussed during the lecture, the reading assignments, and the lab assignments given. LEARNING OUTCOMES (WECM): The student will 1. Configure IP addressing and routing 2. design and implement a domain name server 3. static and dynamic IP addressing
2 4. subnets and supernets 5. Use network management utilities to maintain and troubleshoot IP networks. Tasks CAE2Y IA/CD CAE2Y-CORE-KU 1.8 Information Technology System Components. Describe the hardware components of modern computing environments and their individual functions CAE2Y-CORE-KU 1.9 Networking Concepts. Describe the fundamental concepts, technologies, components and issues related to communications and data networks. Describe a basic network architecture given a specific need and set of hosts/clients. Track and identify the packets involved in a simple TCP connection (or a trace of such a connection). Use a network monitoring tool (e.g., WireShark). Use a network mpapping tool (e.g., Nmap). CAE2Y-CORE-KU 2.3 Network Technology and Protocols Apply their knowledge of network technologies to design and construct a working network Analyze a trace of packets to identify the establishment of a TCP connection Demonstrate the use of a network monitor to display packets CAE2Y-CORE-KU 3.2 Advanced Network Technology & Protocols Describe current networking technologies and trends. Describe and discuss data network architectures and protocols, to include their advantages and disadvantages, applications, and security issues COURSE SCANS COMPETENCIES: Competency Number SCANS 2B Competency Statement Interpersonal: Teaches other new skills Instructional/Evaluation Methodology Student will present/explain to peers IP addressing methodologies used to solve ip network addressing scenarios. Student will address questions relevant to the scenario and the process used to achieve solution. SCANS 6C Arithmetic: Performs basic computations; uses basic numerical concepts such as whole numbers, etc. Student will perform conversions between binary-hexadecimal-decimal representations.

Students will identify and apply methodical steps necessary to analyze, troubleshoot and fix subnet problems.
