OF CREDITS: 3 PRE-REQUISITE(S): INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING RATIONALE: This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge of the data communication and the computer networks that underpins them. The course covers the theoretical framework of data communication network and also embodies the practical approach as per the implementation of such networks. Students will develop a working knowledge of various tools and methods for the management of data communication networks. At the conclusion of the course, the student teacher should have solid understanding data communication and networking technologies, principles and practices. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers the practical implementation of a TCP/IP Network for an organization. It seeks to build on the theoretical concepts of networking to which the teacher students were exposed to in the introduction to networking prerequisite course and transcends that course to give student teacher practical application and real experience. The course also examines the importance of the configuration of various network services, servers as well as provides information about implementing security and preventing unauthorised in network.

2 GENERAL OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the course, the teacher student should: 1. Understand the detailed co-relationship between the OSI and TCP/IP models and the process of data encapsulation. 2. Understand network addressing schemes that utilize internet routed protocols such as IPv4 and IPv6 in designing and implementing logical network topologies. 3. Design, install, and administer a Windows 2008/2012 server installation in domain model. 4. Discuss the Application layer the network reference model and explore the interaction of protocols, services, and applications, with a focus on HTTP, DNS, DHCP, SMTP/POP, Telnet and FTP. 5. Understand the Physical layer and explore how data sends signals are encoded for travel across the network. 6. Understand and implement security best practices for data communication and networking environments. 7. Understand networking concepts of data communication, local area networks (LANs), and wide area networks (WANs), WLAN, quality of service (QoS), and switching in a converged network setting. Unit 1 1. Understand the internetworking of computers and significance of the TCP/IP protocol and the attendant underpinning models such as OSI and TCP/IP. 2. Discuss and implement simple LAN and WAN with the use of network simulator and emulators. 3. Discuss the importance of Quality of Service in a converged network setting. 4. Acquire a working Knowledge of Managing and Maintaining a network environment by: a. Plan, design and implement a virtual server in a single domain b. Monitor traffic and test connectivity and activation of network services between computers

3 CONTENT: Describe the TCP/IP network model. Demonstrate an understanding of IP addressing. Discuss the major protocols of the TCP/IP suite. Explain the functions of Windows 2008 Active Directory (AD) directory services. Describe the AD domain structure and describe the concepts of trees, forests, trusts and organizational units (OUs) Unit 2 Working with IP Addresses a. Comparative overview of IPv4 and IPv6 addressing schemes. b. Subnet given address to implement an effective and efficient logical network topology c. Assign and view static IPv4 and IPv6 Addresses and compare with dynamic network address assignments d. Implement network services and assign and view dynamic IP Addresses using DCHP CONTENT: Manage and Monitoring DCHP services e. Backup, restore and reconcile DCHP f. Implement static name resolution g. Resolve host names efficiently using domain name resolution and verify the working of network services such as HTTP and others. Discuss network addressing in detail and learn how to use the address mask, or prefix length, to determine the number of sub networks and hosts in a network. The student will examine concepts of addressing and routing and learn about path determination, data packets, and the IP protocol. Describe, plan and implement a domain name system.

4 Unit 3 Troubleshooting Networks/Network Security a. Understand the Physical layer and explore how data sends signals and is encoded for travel across the network. b. Plan, design, implement and document security policy, procedures and guidelines c. Troubleshoot network issues using appropriate tools such Netstat, ARP, PING, TRACERT, WIRESHARK and others. d. Plan, design, implement and document Firewall, encryption, switch port security and other security mechanisms. CONTENT: Use Wireshark to exam the Physical layer and how data sends signals are encoded for travel across the network. Examine concepts network security and the attendant best practices for implementation. Discuss various data communication network troubleshooting methods and best practices. INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD: The instructional approaches that will be used during the course comprise: Interaction where the teacher creates the learning experiences, interactions where the teacher in collaboration with students create the learning experiences and interactions where student construct their own learning experiences. Altogether including laboratory or clinical activities, group projects, peer evaluation, practical using real equipment and network simulation, emulation, virtualization and worksheets.

5 ASSIGNMENTS AND EVALUATION Each Assignment will be circulated in class with a description sheet for the assignments, containing its deadline and rubric, where it will be discussed and any questions will be responded to at that time. SUGGESTED METHODS OF INSTRUCTION Lecture, demonstration, simulation, emulation, presentation, cooperative group discussion, research, case studies, practical network planning, design, implementation and documentation.
