1 NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY/CUNY Computer Systems Technology Department COURSE: CST2307 Networking Fundamentals (2 class hours, 2 lab hours, 3 credits) Course Description: This course introduces students to fundamental networking concepts and skills. It provides instruction in networking media, physical and logical topologies, and common networking standards and protocols. Specifically, the course presents the conceptual framework of the OSI model, and its implementation with the TCP/IP and other network protocols. Both networking design and analysis methods are emphasized. Hands-on laboratory exercises reinforce the material presented in the lectures and enable students to develop networking skills. The course also provides students with the knowledge necessary to design, install, configure, and support network infrastructure effectively. Network administration skills are developed for different operating systems like Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Linux. Students perform series of hands-on labs to gain skills in network administration. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate understanding and correct usage of networking terminology. 2. Demonstrate understanding of various networking topologies, major types of network cabling and related technical terms. 3. Describe the role of a Network Interface Card (NIC) for network communications and explain how the NIC controls network communication flow. 4. Demonstrate understanding of the OSI reference model, layers and their relationships to the networking software and protocols. 5. Demonstrate understanding of the function and structure of packets and communication protocols in a network; discuss the layered architecture of protocols and describe the common protocols and how various Network Operating Systems use them. 6. Demonstrate understanding of the functions and features of a Network Operating System. 7. Install Windows Server 2003 and perform related network administration tasks. 8. Install Linux and perform related network administration tasks. 9. Describe the elements of an effective troubleshooting methodology and use a variety of software and hardware tools to diagnose problems. 10. Demonstrate understanding of network backup and recovery strategies as well as protection of a network from viruses. 11. Identify security risks in Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) and understand security techniques. 12. Use Network OS administration techniques to provide basic security. 1

Prerequisite: CST1215 Operating System Fundamentals Required Materials: Text: Network+ Guide to Networks, Tamara Dean, Fifth Edition, Course Technology, 2010, ISBN-13: Students are required to have a USB storage device for class projects. Attendance Policy: Attendance Attendance is expected at every class meeting. College policy sets the maximum number of permissible absences at 10% of the number of class meetings scheduled for the semester. If the class is meeting two times per week, you are permitted to be absent a total of three class sessions; if the class meets only once per week, you are permitted to miss one and one-half of the class meetings. 4 Course Outline: Week Topic Chapter 1 Introduction to Networking : Network types (peer-to-peer, 1, 14 client/server, LAN, WAN), network services (File, Print, Communication, Management), network components (hardware, software). Introduction to Integrity and Availability : methods of Data Backup and preventing malware Lab exercise : install antivirus software Homework project : research on backup systems 2 OSI model and network standards : layers, PDUs, packets, 2 data flow and data transformation through OSI model, IEEE networking specifications 3 Transmission basics and media : analog and digital signals, 3 throughput and bandwidth, baseband and broadband; media characteristics, types of cables, physical layer standards, wireless transmission Lab exercise : demonstrate sample cables, data connectors 3,4 Network Interface Cards : types of NICs, installing network 6 adaptors hardware and software, NIC characteristics Lab 1: demonstrate sample NICs, sample mother board, install NIC into the slot; demonstrate bus connector, bus width. Lab 2 : demonstrate MAC address info by using ipconfig /all Homework project : research on vendor code 4 TEST #1 : chapters 1 3, 6 (NICs), 14 4,5 Network Protocols : TCP/IP basics, IP addressing, classes of 4 IP networks, IPX/SPX, NetBIOS and NetBEUI Lab 1: demonstrate protocols setup in Local Area Connection Properties Lab 2: demonstrate TCP/IP setup in TCP/IP properties. Evaluation methods and criteria 1. Students will demonstrate on homework and exams their proper understanding of the networking terminology. 2. Students will demonstrate on homework and exams how familiar they are with network topologies and cabling. 3. Students will demonstrate on exams and homework projects their understanding of the OSI model. 4. Students will demonstrate on homework projects, lab exercises and exams their ability to setup protocols for Windows OS, and their understanding of major protocols. 5

6 5. Discuss and recognize major network architectures, discuss emerging networking technologies. 6. Demonstrate understanding of major tasks of Network Administration and the network administrator job responsibilities. 7. Describe TCP/IP protocol stack, its purpose, components and TCP/IP applications. 8. Demonstrate understanding of the concept of network fault tolerance and the importance of establishing a network backup system and antivirus software. 9. Demonstrate understanding of the network troubleshooting process, use hardware and software tools to resolve network problems. 5. Students will demonstrate on homework and exams their knowledge of major network architectures. 6. Students will perform basic network administration tasks for a Windows 2003 server network, and Linux based network on lab exercises and exams. 7. Students will demonstrate on homework and exams their knowledge of TCP/IP components and demonstrate their familiarity with TCP/IP applications. 8. Students will demonstrate on homework and exams their knowledge of backup procedures and antivirus software installation and setup. 9.
