2 Research and Education Networks Some Terminology Research and Education = R&E Research and Education Networks = REN National REN = NREN Globally, the REN connectivity is very complex and very difficult to understand

3 REN Characteristics High bandwidth networks 10G backbones with 40G and 100G coming Research typically needs uncongested networks Which means many RENs are lightly used with lots of unused capacity (we call it headroom) Low latency Terrestrial fiber Open Networks with no filtering Firewalls can make it hard for ad-hoc activities

4 Why a REN? Enable research or services that could not be accomplished otherwise Cost Savings (buyers club) Aggregate demand from multiple parties Vision of building alliances Successful RENs find that there are unanticipated benefits

5 Why Are We Doing This? Our goal is to build networking capacity to support Research and Education Remember: University = Research & Education Buying all service from your local ISP is a losing game you will spend more money and not have control of the network The pattern around the world is to build regional, national, and larger Research and Education Networks (RENs)

20 National RENs (NRENs) Provides service to Universities, Colleges, research labs, and others in an entire country Often hosted and operated by a prestigious university in the country Often provides value add services to members Video conferencing, VoIP, e-learning, web hosting, data center space for disaster recovery, etc.

22 NREN Models of Service Two basic models: 1. Peering network Exchange traffic between members Provide international connections (GEANT, etc) Can peer with a local commercial exchange (Google, local ISPs, etc) 2. REN provides all Internet connectivity REN is the ISP In this case, REN also provides peering network

27 Campus Network Role No student, researcher, or faculty member is connected directly to a Global, National, or Regional Network. They are all connected to a campus network Without a good campus network, the entire ecosystem is affected You can have a 100-gigabit connection to your Regional Network and a 100-gigabit backbone in your national network, but if the users have a poor connections on campus, the entire investment is wasted The campus network is the foundation that the entire REN ecosystem is built upon

30 Campus Network Challenges Many campus networks are not structured properly and can t effectively utilize high bandwidth connections Many make heavy use of NAT and firewalls that limit performance Many are built with unmanaged network equipment that provide no ability for monitoring or tuning the network

31 NSRC Assistance The NSRC can help resolve problems with National RENs and campus networks The NSRC provides Direct engineering assistance to tackle and resolve specific problems Training of trainers and training materials to facilitate more human resource development Online training videos for asynch learning Hands on 4 or 5 day in-depth training to improve the skills of local engineers

32 Direct Engineering Assistance Often done in conjunction with a training Provides assistance to solve specific problem and can include Engineering and design assistance Equipment donations often possible Assistance with configuration and deployment Assistance is always shoulder-to-shoulder with local engineers

33 Train the Trainer Trains local engineers in teaching pedagogy and how to use the NSRC Virtual Training Platform (VTP) After being trained, trainers will have access to the NSRC training materials that includes lectures, hands-on labs, and VTP Allows countries and regions to become more independent and take the lead on providing their own training

36 Campus Network Design 5-day hands-on workshop for engineers from campuses that support research and education Engineers will learn about: Campus network design and structure Selecting and designing appropriate fiber optic and copper cabling systems Hands on configuration and troubleshooting with layers 2 (switching) and 3 (routing) Security and Network Monitoring fundamentals

37 Network Monitoring and Management 5-day hands-on workshop for engineers and system staff at ISPs and academic networks who need to provide network operations support Students will learn about: Networking monitoring tools and strategies Advanced Linux/unixskills and techniques SNMP, DNS, and Cisco IOS fundamentals Network Operations Center (NOC) functions

38 Wireless Networking 5-day hands-on workshop for engineers to design and integrate of wireless services into the campus network The engineers will learn about: Wireless networking theory and practice, including antenna design and RF calculations Strategies for supporting mobile devices and roaming across the campus Security, authentication and the underlying infrastructure to support Eduroam

39 BGP This course is variable depending on the needs, but is typically a 3 to 5 day workshop for engineers who need to operate a network with advanced routing Engineers will learn about Core network design Internal routing with OSPF Multihoming BGP and BGP attributes, policies, and best practices

40 Virtualization and Cloud Computing 5-day hands-on workshop covering virtualization technology and practical exercises Students will learn about Virtualization theory and practice Desktop and server virtualization Shared storage strategies High availability and replication Networking to support virualization
