3 Prerequisites/Audience None. This presentation is geared towards the total beginner or person with little or no networking or IT experience. Generally aimed at new charter schools. Content is relevant to anyone who is charged with facilitating a new campus network for a new organization. 3 8/25/16

4 What is a Campus Network? A campus network is the network infrastructure used to deliver networking services to an organization at a particular physical location. 8/25/16

5 Why Do Organizations Have Campus Networks? Data networks have become critical infrastructure for most organizations including schools. In an increasingly connected world, people EXPECT network services. Voice telephone networks have been rapidly migrating to VoIP. Proliferation of cell phones, tablets, and other personal devices people use to manage their daily lives. The Internet of things HVAC, lighting, security cameras, etc. Teachers use more digital technology as learning materials. State of North Carolina has moved testing and education management tools online. Lessons and homework are shifting to online models. 5 8/25/16

6 What Kinds of Services Do People Expect From a Campus Network? Local file/print/scanning services. Internet Access Web Browsing. . Delivery of Cloud Services such as Google Docs, MS Office 365, Canvas, PowerSchool. Content Delivery/Streaming Media Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, Apple TV. Communications services Telephony, Video conferencing, Web meetings, remote access from home to local resources. Building infrastructure Security Cameras, HVAC, Environmental Monitoring. 6 8/25/16

7 Working Parts of a Succesful Campus Network The Supporting Infrastructure The things required to operate and maintain the actual network. Financing Staff Vendors Support Agreements Building Facilities (Power, Cooling, Network Closets) The Network - This includes the actual hardware equipment and plant infrastructure that comprise the network. 9 Network Design Perform a needs analysis to determine the services the network will be required to provide. Campus network design should follow industry best practices. Almost every major network equipment vendor publishes best practices guides for equipment configuration. 9 8/25/16

10 The Difference Between Consumer and Enterprise Class Networking Consumer networks are designed to serve less than 10 people and have lower reliability and performance expectations. Consumer grade equipment is designed and priced with this in mind. Enterprise networks are designed to server hundreds or more people. As a result equipment must be more robust as reliability and performance expectations are much higher. As a result enterprise class equipment that will perform to this expectation are much more expensive. 10 8/25/16

11 Campus Network Design Current best practices guides from network vendors recommend either a two or three tier collapsed backbone network topology depending on network size. Core The routing and switching core of the campus network. Distribution Acts as a routing and security gateway between the access and core tiers. Access Provides end device access to network services Smaller networks may only be Core and Access tiers. This is sometimes called a collapsed distribution and core network design. Core network design will mostly center around switching, routing, and the wired infrastructure. Wireless while critical, is mostly an access tier component. 11 8/25/16

15 Plant Infrastructure Power In order to minimize downtime, network equipment will need a stable source of power. (UPS, Backup Generators) Cabling In order to connect the various network components copper and fiber cabling are needed. (Structured Cabling System) Cabling needs will determine MDF and IDF closet locations. Cooling Network equipment produces heat. Cooling will be needed to remove the heat to prevent equipment damage. Existing Building Ventilation or HVAC. Dedicated Cooling System. Equipment Racking Network equipment should be mounted in industry standard two or four post racks. Equipment located in public spaces should be secured in locking racks to prevent tampering. 15 8/25/16

16 Network Security Security on a network is usually configured in zones. Zones are a grouping of devices on a network that have like security requirements and access rights. Primary network security device is a firewall. It is used to enforce access permissions between Security zones. Layer three switches (routers) can also enforce security zones, however firewalls are a better solution as they are purpose designed for this task. Content filtering of some type is required on all school networks under CIPPA. 16 8/25/16

18 Operations, Administration, and Management All networks require care and feeding. OA&M functions are what helps make the network operate efficiently. Most networks will require the regular attention of a vendor or staff. OA&M is usually performed by various software services or packages, but also includes procedures and processes. Examples of OA&M functionality include a Help Desk, Network Up and Down monitoring software, Network performance monitoring software, network logging software, and software to backup and manage device configurations. Neglecting OA&M in your network design can lead to user perceivable network reliability issues and put staff in a reactive rather than proactive mode of work. 18 8/25/16

19 Putting It All Together Efficient and reliable campus networks don t happen by accident. They are DESIGNED that way. Design involves thinking about more than just buying hardware. It requires a needs analysis, security analysis, and planning for ongoing maintenance and operations. Don t be afraid to engage outside design help when in house resources lack design experience. A little time and money spent up front can save you a lot of headaches and growing pains later. 19 8/25/16
