1 DSN Glossary and Frequently Asked Questions Glossary of terms DTL Dark To Light, a leading brand of quality outdoor controls. DSN DTL Silver Spring Networks Node. LED Light Emitting Diode. INSI Itron Networked Solutions Inc. SSNI Silver Spring Networks Inc. GPS Global Positioning System. 0-10V Lighting control system where 0 to 10 DC volts are used as the control signal. Used for dimming control in DSN. DALI Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. Used for dimming control in DSN. ANSI American National Standards Institute. NEMA National Electrical Manufacturers Association. IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. SLV StreetLight.Vision Central Management Software. TALQ TALQ (not an acronym) is a global consortium initiated by companies from the lighting industry, with the aim of creating a globally accepted open standard for a management software interface for outdoor lighting networks. UV Stabilized Polymer made with anti-ultraviolet chemicals as additives. Used in DSN cover to protect from UV light and enhance cover life. IR pulse indicator Infrared indicator. Used in DSN to provide a mechanism to verify built-in revenue grade meter calibration using an external wand style device which can read IR signals. DST Daylight Saving Time. Relay (Switching) An electrically operating switch. The DSN uses a non-latching relay which maintains it s state only while being actuated. TRIAC TRIode for Alternating Current. Protects the relay in the DSN by generating low inrush current with low voltage switch on and no inductive arcing with low current switch off. MOV Metal Oxide Varistor, an electronic component with an electrical resistance that varies with the applied voltage. Due to its adaptive resistance properties, is used in DSN for surge protection. Inrush protection Mechanism designed to protect an electrical or electronic device from maximum, instantaneous input current drawn by an electrical device when first turned on. Surge protection Mechanism designed to protect electrical or electronic devices from voltage spikes. Group response As it relates to networked lighting applications, the ability for a lighting control to control lights defined in a group. Motion sensor input As it relates to NEMA twist lock controls, the ability of a lighting control to receive signals from a sensor connected to pins six and seven of a P7 NEMA receptacle. Revenue-grade energy measurement Ability to measure energy consumed by a connected load at an accuracy class of 0.5% per ANSI C FCC Federal Communications Commission. DSN is FCC part 15 approved. IPv6 Internet Protocol version 6, latest version offers many benefits to mesh networks.

2 DSN Glossary Wi-SUN Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Networks. Wi-SUN is a leading global industry alliance promoting interoperable wireless standards based solutions for the Internet of Things. X.509 X.509 is a security standard that defines the format of public key certificates. AES256 Advanced Encryption Standard using 256-bit keys for enhanced security. culus UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed mark for Canada and United Sates. Smart Grid An electrical grid which includes a variety of operational and energy measures including smart meters, smart devices, networked LED streetlights, renewable energy resources, and energy efficient resources. Smart Grid / Network canopy A Smart Grid or network application which has the capability to act as a network backbone for most other network or Smart City applications. Smart City An urban area that uses different types of electronic data collection sensors to supply information used to manage assets and resources efficiently. IoT Internet of things, is the network of critical infrastructure, physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity which enable these objects to connect and exchange data. SaaS Software as a Service. When offered by Acuity for a Silver Spring deployment, includes StreetLight. Vision and Network Management for a monthly fee based on number of deployed endpoints. Comes with a 99% Service Level Agreement (SLA) backed by customer credits. Requires a three year contract. NaaS Network as a Service. When offered by Acuity for a Silver Spring deployment, includes network operations and data connectivity for all endpoints, network equipment and backhaul, for a monthly fee based on number of deployed endpoints. Comes with a 99% Service Level Agreement (SLA) backed by customer credits. Requires a five year contract. PaaS Platform as a Service. When NaaS and SaaS are offered as a package. Monthly fee based on number of deployed endpoints is lower versus when SaaS and NaaS are bought separately. Requires a five year contract. WAN Wide Area Network. In a Silver Spring network, consists of cellular or Ethernet backhaul from the Silver Spring Access Point (a network traffic routing device) which bridges WAN to NAN. NAN / FAN Neighborhood or Field Area Network. In a Silver Spring network, consists of any device with a Silver Spring NIC, such as, Streetlight controls, meters, IoT Edge routers, Silver Spring Relay (mesh strengthener), etc. AP Silver Spring Access Point regulates traffic between two dissimilar networks (Wi-SUN mesh and IP backhaul). It does not store any data, merely routes data from endpoints to cloud and back. It has cellular or Ethernet for backhaul to the cloud, an optional battery backup and a FAN antenna which enables it to join the Silver Spring mesh. Relay (Networking) Silver Spring Relay is a device designed to receive, reinforce, and retransmit RF signals on the Silver Spring mesh. It is similar to an AP in terms of mesh performance, but without backhaul connectivity. It acts as a mesh strengthener primarily for AMI networks. NIC Network Interface Card. A Silver Spring network interface card which resides in all endpoints in a Silver Spring Networks. In addition to being a network card, it also has onboard memory to collect data, store calendars and schedules and intelligence to detect errors in street lights. In the DSN, it also comes equipped with a last-gasp capacitor which lets it transmit it s last state back through the network in case of power loss. Network ID As it relates to Silver Spring network deployments, a network ID is a unique identifier for customer owned networks. Mesh Network Is a local network topology in which network endpoints connect directly, dynamically and non-hierarchically to as many other nodes as possible and cooperate with one another to efficiently route data from/ to clients.

3 DSN Glossary API Application Programming Interface is a set of clearly defined methods of communication between various software components. Silver Spring Networks offers both software and hardware APIs to enable developers to create Smart City applications. HDK Hardware Development Kit is set of hardware tools which allow developers to build proof of concepts and prototypes of hardware devices or systems. As it relates to Silver Spring, HDKs consist of Silver Spring NICs interfaced with Single Board Computers which enable developers to interface external hardware and sensors along with performing edge computing to create Smart City and other applications which can utilize the Silver Spring Network. AMI Advanced Metering Infrastructure is a system comprised of Smart Meters which measure, collect, and analyze energy usage, and communicate with metering devices such as electricity meters, gas meters, heat meters, and water meters, either on request or on a schedule. SDK Software Development Kit is a set of software development tools that allows the creation of applications for a certain software package, software framework, hardware platform, computer system, video game console, operating system, or similar development platform. As it relates to Silver Spring, software documentation is available to hook into SL.V APIs.

Yes, the DTL DSN has a long life switching circuit comprised of a TRIAC assisted relay designed for 20+ years of networked LED operations. Can the DTL DSN be used in a ROAM deployment? No, the DTL DSN is powered by Silver Spring Networks technology whereas ROAM is based on proprietary Acuity Brands technology which make them incompatible with each other. Does the DSN support grouped response to motion sensors? Yes, the DTL DSN is a 7-pin NEMA node. If a PIR (Passive Infrared), Radar or other kind of sensor is wired to pins six and seven of the NEMA 7-pin receptacle, the DSN can be configured as a master to control grouped lights as defined in SL.V. The grouped response is locally controlled by a defined DSN master node leading to faster response times. Can the DTL DSN be used in a Silver Spring Network where other Silver Spring partner streetlight nodes are currently deployed? Yes, the Silver Spring Networks platform is an open Wi-SUN standards based platform and any device with a Silver Spring NIC configured with the correct customer network ID, such as a DTL DSN can join an existing Silver Spring deployment. How many active Silver Spring devices are in the market today? As of end of 2017, Silver Spring has over 27 million active IoT devices in the world. What is the typical access point to node ratio in a Silver Spring mesh network? The typical AP to node ratio in a Silver Spring deployment is 1:5000. Even larger ratios are possible but to maintain a 99% NaaS SLA, Silver Spring deployments will always have redundant access points installed. What radio frequency spectrum does the DSN operate on in North America? The DSN operates in the ISM frequency range MHz with a frequency hopping spread technique. The SSN NIC has a transmit power of 1W and receiver sensitivity of -98 dbm (decibelmilliwatts) for 10% PER (Packet Error Rate). This results in stable mesh connectivity due to frequency hopping which dodges interference and very long endpoint-to-endpoint range (up to 7 miles) due to high transmit power in sub-ghz spectrum and ability to receive weaker signals. What is the typical endpoint-to-endpoint range for devices such as the DTL DSN with Silver Spring streetlight NICs? The endpoint-to-endpoint range can vary by a large degree based on environmental factors such as vegetation, weather, buildings, topography, etc. but in a perfect, clear weather, point-to-point line of sight scenario, endpoint-to-endpoint links for DSNs can form up to six miles long. What are the primary features of StreetLight.Vision s lighting management system? Primary features of StreetLight.Vision as it relates to lighting management are asset management, failure detection, data analysis, real time control and monitoring, and scheduling services. Are real-time alerts possible with Silver Spring Networks? Yes, SL.V has a feature called Alarm Manager which can be used for real-time alerts based on certain criteria being met. An or text can be sent for certain alarms as well. Can the Silver Spring network be used for video streaming or mobile location tracking applications? No, the Silver Spring Network Platform is designed to create ubiquitous network canopies to connect critical infrastructure, not video streaming or mobile location tracking.

5 DSN Frequently Asked Questions Does Silver Spring offer locally hosted or enterprise software for StreetLight.Vision? No it does not, StreetLight.Vision has an HTML5 based frontend and can be accessed from any device using a browser which supports HTML5. Can the DSN node continue to operate and manage light(s) if it loses access to the network and StreetLight.Vision? Here is what happens in a rare instance if the DSN loses network connectivity: 1. It will keep trying to connect to the network using all possible paths through neighbors stored on onboard memory. 2. It will keep running its last stored schedule for 13 days. 3. After day 13, it will switch to photocell mode as it no longer has access to an accurate clock to prevent incorrect operation due to clock drift or DST changes. What are the minimum number of endpoints needed to effectively deploy a Silver Spring network for it to be financially viable? A network deployment of at least a 1000 nodes is considered a full deployment for a Silver Spring Network where NaaS or PaaS can be offered. 99% Service Level Agreements (SLA) can only be offered to networks which are larger than 1000 endpoints.
