On October 30 th 2012, Hewlett- Packard announced the upcoming availability of its first page-wide inkjet devices the OfficeJet Pro X series.

3 Introduction Over the years, color inkjet printers have become an established device in U.S. households and small offices. Nevertheless, inkjet printers and all-in-ones (AIOs) have been slow to migrate to the general office environment. On October 30 th 2012, Hewlett- Packard announced the upcoming availability of its first page-wide inkjet devices the OfficeJet Pro X series. All of the products are targeted toward the business market. From a hardware and supplies perspective, we believe the development in page-wide technology has the most potential to create disruption within this market. The office market has traditionally been dominated by laser-based technology, but with the introduction HP s new page-wide inkjet devices with their impressive speed, print quality, robust paper handling capabilities, and up to 50% lower cost per page (CPP) than laser it could really change how customers view inkjet. HP OfficeJet Pro X Series HP s new OfficeJet Pro X Series devices include: three single function printers the HP OfficeJet Pro X451dn/451dw and the HP OfficeJet Pro X551dw and three multifunctional 4-in-1 (print/copy/scan/fax) models the HP OfficeJet Pro X476dn/dw and the HP OfficeJet Pro X576dw. Figure 1: HP OfficeJet Pro X Series With speeds up to 70 ppm (X500) and 55 ppm (X400) in general office mode and speeds up to 42 ppm (X500) and 36 ppm (X400) in professional mode, the new HP OfficeJet Pro X series gains its speed advantage through the page-wide array, which is also referred to as the print bar. The 8.8 monolithic print bar is rated to last the life of the printer and is based on HP s Scalable Printing Technology, a photolithographic process for developing thermal inkjet printheads that is used in HP s production-level devices, including their Inkjet Web Press. 4 Product Comparison InfoTrends chose several competitive color laser models (single function and multifunction) to compare HP s claim of color for up to 50% lower cost per page. The competitive models were chosen based on comparable specifications, including average selling price 1, color and monochrome print speeds, as well as duty cycles. The cost per page calculations were determined by utilizing supplies pricing and yields from data supplied by GAP Intelligence. InfoTrends chose to use thirdparty figures for supplies yields and pricing to remain objective and to eliminate any potential for skewed results by using figures reported by vendors. To calculate total CPP, InfoTrends included all replaceable supplies for each model. One of the advantages of inkjet technology is that it typically requires fewer replaceable supplies compared with laser-based imaging. For example, the only replaceable supplies used in the new HP OfficeJet Pro X series are the individual color ink cartridges. In fact, the new HP model utilizes separate printheads and ink tanks, and the printheads actually last the lifetime of the product. This is an important benefit because it reduces the cost of the replacement ink cartridges, which leads to lower overall printing costs. The new inks have the ability to perform at high speeds and produce quality/usable documents that are fastdrying, long-lasting, and highlighter-resistant. Another new feature of HP s new devices is a very low ink warning as well as a gauge indicating approximately how many pages remain before the supplies run out. The printer will also finish printing the last page at resolution, which HP refers to as out of ink page completion. 5 available for these devices are more environmentally friendly than low-yield cartridges because they involve less intervention and, consequently, less waste. Many of the color laser products in our comparison grid require other replaceable components, such as fuser units, organic photo-conductor (OPC) belts, and waste toner kits. These additional supplies components add to the total cost of printing and are often overlooked when users consider total operating costs. Whenever possible, InfoTrends selected high-capacity toner cartridges to achieve the most economical cost per page for competitive laser devices. Benefits of Page-wide Array Printhead It used to be that the question of ink versus laser was a combination of two factors: initial investment (i.e., price of unit) and the cost over time. Typically, laser printers have a higher price but deliver a lower cost per page despite having more expensive cartridges. Inkjet printers where typically cheaper to purchase, but become more expensive to own over time as the cartridges are replaced more frequently. In the past, in a cost per page analysis, laser printers would fare much better. With the introduction of HP s OfficeJet Pro series and new page-wide array technology, however, HP has been able to address both of these requirements offering up to 50% cost per print savings compared to color lasers as well as a competitive price point along with up to twice the speed. For example, compared with the competitive color laser printers we have listed below, the new HP OfficeJet X series offers up to twice the speed and up t0 a 50% cost savings in cost per page. The HP OfficeJet Pro X series even has a lower cost per page than some HP LaserJet models. Compared to both Samsung s CLX-6260FD MFP and CLP-680ND printer series and the Xerox Phaser 6280n, the HP OfficeJet Pro X series has a total CPP of 6.8 cents. By comparison the Samsung and Xerox models have a CPP of (15.0 cents). The HP Officejet Pro X Series offers a savings of roughly 57% compared to those models. In addition, compared to Lexmark ss x544n color laser MFP, the HP OfficeJet Pro X 500 series has a total CPP of 6.8 cents versus the Lexmark X544n (14.0 cents). The HP OfficeJet Pro X series offers a savings of roughly 52%. In addition, Brother s MFC 9460CDN and MFC 9970CDW color laser printers have a total CPP of roughly 13.0 cents. HP OfficeJet Pro X series offers a cost per page saving of 51% compared to those models. Clearly the HP Officjet Pro X series offer considerable cost per page advantages compared with traditional laser-based engines. 7 InfoTrends Opinion As previously mentioned, the purpose of this report was to further evaluate HP s printing claim of color at up to 50% lower CPP than lasers. Based on our assumptions and methodology, InfoTrends has concluded that not only can HP s OfficeJet Pro X 400/500 Series deliver color printing at significant cost savings compared to competitive color laser products, but the cost savings can be substantially greater in certain cases. Some argue that while inkjet products might offer a more economical option, the technology is not robust enough to withstand the everyday use of an office environment. That may be been the case in the past, but HP s new page-wide array technology incorporates advancements in speed, performance, cost to print, sustainability, and image quality that have not been seen before in this class of product. As a result, InfoTrends believes that HP s new OfficeJet Pro X400/X500 series printers and MFPs represents a strong alternative to laser for smaller businesses especially those looking to take advantage of the value of color.
