5 Preface PURPOSE OF THIS MANUAL This manual describes how to prepare a site for the CTL 9712 DPS 7000 Integrated Library Unit (ILU). It gives the specific site requirements for the following aspects of the ILU subsystem: floor space needed electrical power supply air conditioning temperature and humidity relative positions of machines Reference is made to existing site preparation guides for more general site details. INTENDED READERS This manual is intended for persons who need to plan and implement a site for the library subsystem. The intended readers include managers and technical staff involved in the site preparation. 6 CTL 9712 DPS 7000 Site Preparation Guide SUBSYSTEM STRUCTURE A CTL 9712 DPS 7000 ILU subsystem site is made up of different components: a Bull DPS 7000 (existing) a CTL 9712 ILU with one host controller (CTS D ) a maximum of two CTL 9712 ILUs, daisy-chained to the first ILU (CTS D ) SCSI links between the DPS 7000(s) and the subsystem(s) MANUAL STRUCTURE Chapter 1 outlines the stages of any site preparation. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the computer site and connection architecture. Reference is made to existing site preparation guides for more general information. Chapter 3 gives details of the specific site preparations necessary for the installation of the CTL 9712 DPS 7000 ILU Subsystem. 11 1. Site Preparation Planning 1.1 INTRODUCTION The installation of any computer implies the planning, initiation, and execution of many tasks. In addition to the tasks of general organization, programming and education, those concerning the preparation of the computer room (or site) and its environment are to be considered. There are three principal categories of environmental work to be undertaken. They relate to: the building the power supply the air conditioning for the computer The purpose of this manual is to treat these problems by describing the technical considerations necessary for a successful and efficient installation of the Bull CTL 9712 DPS 7000 Integrated Library Unit (ILU) Subsystem. Throughout all phases of planning, site preparation and installation your Bull Site Preparation representatives will help you to interpret this manual and give the benefit of their experience. 77 A1 29UU Rev00 1-1

12 CTL 9712 DPS 7000 Site Preparation Guide 1.2 PLANNING A successful installation requires careful consideration during the planning phase, and close supervision during the execution phase of site preparation. It is your responsibility as the customer to ensure that the site will be ready to receive the system at least one week before delivery. If the system is to be installed in an existing site, the schedule will depend largely on the extent of the modifications necessary to meet the system requirements. If any doubts exist regarding the suitability of existing facilities, your Bull Site Preparation Representatives will examine the current site, and recommend the necessary modifications for the installation. To help you with planning, the Bull Site Preparation and Maintenance representatives have well-established planning procedures which can be tailored to particular requirements. As no two installations are alike, no exact schedule can be given here. However, the following recommendations will act as a rough guide to the sequence and timing of major events. 13 Weeks Before Delivery Approve layout plans of computer site, the surrounding areas and the equipment in the computer room. Draw up specifications, and invite tenders for contracts. 11 Weeks Before Delivery Review tenders and award contracts. Site meeting of selected contractors, Bull representatives and outside consultants. 9 Weeks Before Delivery Place all orders for equipment and necessary furnishings. Establish a working plan for the modifications to be performed. 8 Weeks Before Delivery Complete all structural modifications, rewiring and installation of the air conditioning. Check that corridor, door and window widths conform to specifications. 6 Weeks Before Delivery Install raised floor and suspended ceiling (where applicable). Check floor loading A1 29UU Rev00

13 Site Preparation Planning 5 Weeks Before Delivery Decorate and thoroughly clean the computer room. Commission the electrical and air conditioning equipment. NOTE: Air balancing of the air conditioning system should be performed by air balancing specialists. Do this as soon as possible after the system installation has been completed. Install any auxiliary equipment, such as terminals, modems, and so on. Ensure that they are operating correctly. 2 Weeks Before Delivery Bull Site Preparation and Maintenance representatives will specify "preparation complete". 1 Week Before Delivery All work completed and the computer room thoroughly cleaned. Air conditioning and electrical plant test-run during this period. Use the shipping information in the product specific documentation to determine the "delivery trail", and check that this is obstacle-free. The Computer Site The precise details of the computer site where you install your CTL 9712 DPS 7000 ILU subsystem depend on the connection architecture. 2.1 CONNECTION ARCHITECTURE Below is an example of connection architecture which shows a chain of three CTL 9712s connected between two DPS 7000s. Because the maximum length of the SCSI chain must not exceed 25 meters, the DPS 7000s are connected with 10m cables. This then allows 5m for internal cabling connection between the CTL units. For general installation details, refer to the site preparation documentation for the DPS 7000 installation as indicated in the Site Preparation Manual Reference Table. CTL 9712 Specifics This chapter helps you to prepare your existing site for the installation and connection of the CTL 9712 DPS 7000 ILU subsystem. 3.1 PHYSICAL SPECIFICATIONS The following table gives the physical specifications for the CTL 9712 ILU drive. Table 3-1. Physical Specifications Height Width Depth Weight * 23.1 cm (8.75 in) includes 10 mm for the feet 48.2 cm (18.98 in) 71 cm (27.95 in) 40 kg (90 lbs) (single CTU only) NOTE: Weight is given without tape cartridges. 18 CTL 9712 DPS 7000 Site Preparation Guide 3.2 ELECTRICAL AND POWER REQUIREMENTS Power Consumption The ILU subsystem has a single, auto-ranging power supply. The CTL 9712 is supplied with appropriate cable ends (50/60 Hz AC cords). The power consumption for CTL 9712 is 230 Watts Continuous (270 Watts peak) AC Input Voltages Table 3-2. AC Input Voltage CTL 9712 Component AC Input Voltage The auto-ranging Power Supply Unit (PSU) operates between 95 and 252 Vac nominal at 50 to 60 Hz Inrush Current Table 3-3. Inrush Current CTL 9712 Component Inrush Current Maximum inrush current will not exceed 35 Amps at the maximum input voltage of 240 Volts ac. Maximum duration of inrush pulse shall be 200 milliseconds The average input current is 2.6 Amps at an input voltage of 100 V rms. For details of the corresponding environmental limits, refer to the Site Preparation Guide for the mainframe computer. NOTE: The temperature and humidity of data cartridges brought in from outside the computer site must be allowed to stabilize in the specified ambient environment for 24 hours Operating Heat Output The table below summarizes operating heat output for the various components and configurations of the library subsystem. 21 CTL 9712 and CTS 4890 Specifics 3.4 FLOOR SPACE REQUIREMENTS For maintenance reasons, technicians accessing the front and back of the CTL 9712 will require clearance of at least 60 cm (24 inches). 60 cm (24 in) CTL cm (24 in) Figure 3-1. 22 CTL 9712 DPS 7000 Site Preparation Guide 3.6 RELATIVE POSITIONS OF MACHINES Within your computer site the actual position of the ILU subsystem will be dictated by physical space restrictions. The available cable lengths for connections between machines impose additional restrictions on the relative positions of machines. The logic cables for connecting up the CTL 9712 are only available in the following lengths: Connection DPS 7000 to Library Subsystem Cable Length 10 meters or 20 meters The power cable for the CTLD 001 is 3.1 m long. Connection Cable Length ILU Subsystem to Power Supply 3.1 meters NOTE: If you have a false floor, remember to allow 50 cm for the drop of the power cable, and 1m for the combined drop and ascent of a logic cable.
