Ensure that correct fuses are used (see Technical Specifications). Operate the MSS central processing unit only if it is completely intact. Ensure that the MSS central processing unit is only used for protection against hazards. Ensure that all relevant safety instructions and regulations for the machine concerned are always followed. Ensure that all applicable European guidelines and national statutory requirements/directives are followed. Ensure that switches are switched only with no voltage applied. Date:

10 3 Function The MSS central unit consists of two independent units. Unit Components 1 Sensor inputs S1 and S2 Input external contactor 1 and 2 Safety outputs SA1 and SA2 Control outputs A1 and A2 2 Sensor inputs S3 and S4 Input external contactor 3 and 4 Safety outputs SA3 and SA4 Control outputs A3 and A4 Unit can be used as 1 central unit EMERGENCY OFF relay 2-hand control 2 central unit EMERGENCY OFF relay with cross short detection with delayed switch-off of control outputs Each unit is equipped with 2 sensor inputs with 2 normally open contacts each. Each sensor input drives one control output. Note Each control output allows controlling one SPS. The safety outputs of this unit switch on when both sensor inputs of a unit are energized. 25 Date:

11 The unit checks the external-contactor loop before energizing the safety outputs. Switch 7 switches a sensor input 4 to 4-wire connection. When sensor input 4 is has been switched to 4-wire connection: sensor 5 switches sensor input 4 from normally open contact/normally open contact to normally open contact/normally closed contact. the unit monitors sensor input 4 for shorts across contacts. To extend the 4 sensor inputs, use the following interfaces: Type 363 V98 for 8 sensors without sensor control Type for 4 sensors with sensor control Switches 1 to 4 delay de-energizing safety output 4. The switches set the delay time between 0 and 15 seconds. 4 Mounting Danger Risk of death from electric shock! Ensure that the MSS central unit is installed and commissioned by specially trained, authorized personnel only. Install MSS central unit on a DIN rail (DIN ) in the control cabinet. The MSS central processing unit is fixed now. Connect MSS central unit (see Technical Specifications). Ensure that the correct fuses are used (see Technical Specifications). If a unit is used as an EMERGENCY OFF relay: Install a start button in the external-contactor loop. Date:

12 5 Start-up Danger Danger of fatal electric shock! Ensure that the MSS central unit is installed and commissioned by specially trained, authorized personnel only. Remove the top cover of the MSS central unit. Set the switches. Ensure that both rows of switches are set identically. Close the top cover of the MSS central unit. Verify that all sensors are energized. Apply the supply voltage. With the supply voltage applied: the supply voltage LED is on. LEDs 3, 4 and 5 are flashing. the MSS central unit performs an internal self-test. After successful completion of the test: The MSS central unit connects through the safety output and the control output. The Readness-for-service LED lights up. The MSS central processing unit is operational now. As soon as there occurs an error during operation: The LED readiness-for-service switches off. The respective output switches off. 27 Date:

13 5.1 Restoring the Readiness-for-service status Contact of a sensor open If the safety output was de-energized by the opening of a normally open contact or the closing of a normally closed contact of a sensor: Close the normally open contact. Open the normally closed contact. The safety output will connect through again. Different switching states of the contacts of a sensor If different switching states of the two contacts of a sensor were present for longer than three seconds: Close the normally closed of that sensor. Open the normally open contact of that sensor. This will restore the Readiness-for-service status. Open the normally open contact of that sensor. Close the normally closed contact of that sensor. The safety outputs will connect through again. 5.2 Safety output remains switched off Check connections at input and output terminals: supply voltage, connected sensors. Connections at input and output terminals OK: Replace MSS central unit. Date:

14 6 Maintenance 6.1 Measures Automatic Self-test of MSS central unit To ensure safe operation of the system, start the MSS central unit self-test at least every three weeks. Switch off the supply voltage. Switch on the supply voltage. With the supply voltage applied: the supply voltage LED is on. LEDs 3, 4 and 5 are flashing. the MSS central unit starts the self-test (duration: approx. 2 s). After successful completion of the automatic self-test: The MSS central unit connects through the safety output and the control output. The Readiness-for-service LED lights up. The MSS central processing unit is operational. 6.2 Operation with interface One or more normally open contacts of the connected sensors are open. Close the contacts at the sensor inputs. The supply voltage LED is on. The MSS central unit connects through the output. The MSS central processing unit is operational. 6.3 Disposal Dispose of packaging and used parts according to the regulations of the country in which the device is installed. 29 Date:
