(1) transformer in this kit: U27 fs Connectors: (17) Connectors in this ki t: U19 to U26 4pin header U19 to U26,serial cable 4pin with latch Assembly Instructions: 1) Observe polarity and Install U2, U3, U28, C1, C2, C4, C5. 2) Install U1, U4, and U5. 3) Insert U9 into the circuit board and secure it to the PCB by soldering its metal tab directly to the square pad on the PCB Insert U29 in to the circuit board and bend its leads slightly to hold it in place. Then insert the heat sink. Insert the screw through the component, heat sink and circuit board using the hole provided in each. Straighten the leads of U29 then solder in place. 4) Next, install R32, R33, R34, R35, R36, R37, C3, C6, C7, C8, C9, and C10. Install the 8 pin socket for U10 then observer polarity and install U10. At this point, all components for the oscillator are installed and should be tested before any further assembly. Failure to do so may result in damage to Q5. a) First connect power leads to U1. Red (+) is the upper connection and Black ( ) is the lower connection. b) Connect an oscilloscope to R32 (furthest pin from U10) and ground. c) Connect power to the sequencer. (Red 13.8v and black to ground) d) Power on the oscilloscope and verify an approximate 2.5khz square wave on R32. Do not continue if the square wave is not present or you will most certainly destroy Q5. Verify that all components are installed correctly then retest. 5) Disconnect power and insert Q5 into the circuit board and secure it to the PCB by soldering its metal tab directly to the square pad on the PCB. Then solder the leads of Q5 to the circuit board. 6) Observe polarity and Install U27. At this point the high voltage power supply is complete and should be tested. a) Using insulated jumpers, connect a multi meter to R36 and ground. b) Power on the multi meter and the sequencer and verify 230v AC. c) Before continuing, disconnect power to the sequencer.

7) Install the resonator Y1, LED1, and tactile switch S1. 8) Observe polarity and Install transistors Q1 through Q4. 9) Install remaining 10k resistors R1 through R8, R11, R22, and R23 through R31. 10) Install the 1k resistors R12 through R19. 11) Install the 1k 1/2w resistors R38 through R45. 12) Install the 330 ohm resistors R20, R21, and R36. 13) Observe polarity and Install U11 through U18. 14) Install connectors U19 through U26. 15) Cut off 4 pins from the unshrouded Header and install in position U7. 16) Observe pin1 markings and install the IC sockets for U6, and U8. 17) Observe pin1 markings and Insert U6, and U8 into the sockets. Serial Cable parts and wiring: Assemble the serial programming cable using the drawing below. 1) Solder pins 6 and 7 on the db9 connector together. 2) Use hookup wire and connect pins 2,3,4,5 of the db9 to pins 1,2,3,4 of the 2.54mm connector respectively. Testing and first use: Download and install the Parallax Basic Stamp editor on the computer used for programming. Connect the previously assembled serial cable to U7 of the kit and attach the db9 to the serial port of the computer. Attach EL Wire to pins 1 and 2 on the female header connectors provided. Alternately, the EL wire can be attached to pins 3 and 4. When finished, insert the connectors into U19 through U26. The kit is designed to operate with a power source from 12 to 14 volts DC. Run the Basic Stamp editor

and open the file elwirev1 then apply power to connector U1. Next, press the editors run button to transfer the file to kit. After the transfer is complete the editors debug terminal will open. Press the space bar to run the kits built in test sequence. When the test is complete a configuration menu will appear in the editors debug window. The Main Menu : The kits Main menu: This is the kits configuration editor and can be entered by holding SW1 during power up or issuing a BRAKE command in your configuration. Up to 999 commands can be entered sequentially. The first line is a simulator of the kits functions. As you enter commands or scroll through an existing program its contents are updated to simulate the operation of the kit. The second line displays the commands available. The third line indicates the command number being edited as well as the command currently at that location. Three navigation commands are available in this menu. (+) will increment the command number being edited, (t) will return you to the first command and the space bar will exit the editor and run your program. Turning ports on and off: Two commands are available for direct port control. (o) Will allow you to turn on ports and (x) will turn off ports. After entering either command, you will be prompted for a port number to perform the function on. Ports are labeled 1 through 8 from left to right and a zero represents all ports. The space bar will abort this command and return you to the main menu. Pausing execution: Commands will be executed extremely fast so it will be necessary to frequently pause execution. For example: To blink the EL Wire contected to port 1 on and off then on again you would need to enter the folowing commands: ON1,PAUSE2,OFF1, PAUSE2,ON1. If the pause s were omited, the program would be executed to fast to be seen.

Controlling Intensity: Four levels of intensity are avalable from zero (off) to five (bright). This command will affect the brightness of all ports and should be the first command in your program. The intensity command is used for visual effects and lighting balance while varying the load on the power supply. The Utility Menu: This menu provides 3 additional program commands (s,l,f) and one additional navigation command (j). The space bar will abort this menu and return you to the main menu. Syncing to External Events: These functions allows program interaction with external devices or other sequnceres. A (1) will pause execution indefinitely while maintaining the current output configuration. Program execution will not continue untill a 5v signal is detected on the Sync IN connector. Durring program exacution, pressing SW1 will simulate reciving a sync pulse. A (2) will send a 5v sync pulse out on the sync out connector. The Loop Command: This command forces program execution to restart from the beginning (the first command). This creates an infinite loop and is the last command in your configuration. Jumping: This is a navagation command that will jump forward 10 locations in your program. The simulator will execute all of your commands from the start point to the end point and correctly indicate port status and intensity. Functions: routines listed below. This will transfer program control to one of 25 predefined Function Table

a NULL No operation is performed. b BRAKE Stop program execution and open the editor at this location Functions (c) through (m) are only performed on outputs that are active at time of exacution. c FADE OUT d FADE IN Fade effects FADE OUT sets intensity to zero on exit. e STROBE f STROBE FAST Flash outputs in a strobe like fashion. g FLICKER1 h FLICKER2 Flicker effects i DANCE Randomly flash active outputs. j SHIFT< k SHIFT> Shift outputs off to the left or right. l SHIFT<< m SHIFT>> Same as above only fast. n o p q r s Functions (n) through (t) are performed on all outputs. Turn off all ports before executing functions (p) through (t) to avoide flicker. INVERT INVERT FAST INCREMENT INCREMENT FAST DECREMENT DECREMENT FAST Flash outputs by inverting their state. Increment through the outputs turning the previous off. Decrement through the outputs turning the previous off. t PUMP Increment and decrement through the outputs. Functions (c) through (z) return program controll to the next command in the stack and maintain the previous state of the outputs and intensity unless otherwise noted PJL
