2 Pow-R-Command 1000 system General description The Pow-R-Command 1000 system is a complete network of devices that allows a facility s electrical use to be efficiently managed. With the Pow-R-Command 1000, individual loads can be switched through a network of individual panelboards, which are influenced by building automation systems, wall switches, time schedules and software, or through telephone commands, and so forth. See technical document TD E for more information on the Pow-R-Command 1000 system. Applications for Pow-R-Command 1000 systems The Pow-R-Command 1000 system is primarily designed for larger facilities where multiple nodes need to be networked together and controlled through software. However, Pow-R-command 1000 can also be scaled down to meet the needs of some smaller facilities while offering the same functions as a large networked system. The Pow-R-Command 1000 system controls electrical loads while maintaining a compact design. Additionally, the Pow-R-Command 1000 system can be seamlessly integrated into building automation systems, security systems, and fire/emergency systems. Pow-R-Command 1000 network philosophy The Pow-R-Command system is designed to provide the user with great flexibility in interfacing. In most circumstances, the Pow-R- Command system uses an RS-485 protocol and communication standard to send and receive commands between control devices. This RS-485 network is accessed through either RS-232 or Ethernet. For more information on RS-485, RS-232, and Ethernet, please see technical document TD E. The system is also capable of communication through BACnet, OPC, and SOAP devices. Simple connectivity The Pow-R-Command system is capable of connecting to other systems and devices through protocol-based communication. However, in some circumstances, protocol-based communication is not necessary, and nothing more than a simple contact closure is needed to connect two devices together. Inputs and outputs of a Pow-R-Command 1000 system The Pow-R-Command 1000 system has several devices that provide digital and analog inputs and outputs to the system. Universal system controller (USC) Switch override controller (SOC) Universal I/O module (UIO) USC both the Pow-R-Command 100 and Pow-R-Command 1000 systems include a USC. The USC100 is equipped with a number of low voltage 2-wire inputs and outputs: Eight (8) universal inputs Four (4) digital inputs Three (3) analog outputs The USC1000 offers low voltage 2-wire inputs and outputs as follows: Eight (8) universal inputs Eight (8) digital inputs Four (4) analog outputs Eight (8) digital outputs Both USCs also offer a +15 Vdc power source. SOC The SOC offers low voltage 2-wire inputs and outputs as follows: Forty-eight (48) digital inputs Three (3) analog outputs Additional four (4) digital inputs Eight (8) universal inputs Sixteen (16) 12 Vdc outputs for status LEDs 15 Vdc power source Optional 32 additional 12 Vdc outputs for status LEDs Please see technical document TD E for more information on the SOC. Universal I/O module the universal I/O module (UIO) further expands the Pow-R-Command system s ability to accept inputs and provide outputs. The following pages provide detailed information on this controller. Pow-R-Command 1000 universal I/O module The UIO module is added to a network to accommodate expanded input and output needs. In most circumstances, the USC can accommodate the input and output needs of an application. However, when more is required, a UIO module can easily be installed and integrated into the system. Universal I/O module features The UIO is available in two models: the UIO-8 and the UIO-4. The following features are available: UIO-8 model: Twelve (12) dedicated digital inputs Eight (8) digital outputs Eight (8) universal (analog/digital) inputs Three (3) analog outputs +15 Vdc power source LED status indicators RS-485 communication port Removable terminal blocks for easy wiring and maintenance UIO-4 model: Four (4) digital outputs Eight (8) universal (analog/digital) input Three (3) analog output +15 Vdc power source LED status indicators RS-485 communication port Removable terminal blocks for easy wiring and maintenance Note: The UIO-4 does not have dedicated digital inputs. POW-R-MAND 1000 UNIVERSAL I/O MODULE FEATURES Universal I/O module digital input device specifications The UIO-8 module contains a total of 12 dedicated low voltage 2-wire digital inputs. The devices connected to these inputs can be either maintained or momentary switches and can have either normally open or normally closed contacts. All digital input devices must be dry contact devices because a wetting voltage of unregulated +24 Vdc is provided by the UIO. Mount input devices no more than 500 feet (153 m) from the UIO module. Terminate with 18 AWG stranded copper wire. Universal I/O module digital output specifications UIOs have either four or eight low voltage 2-wire digital outputs, depending on the model. Each output functions as a controllable 24 Vac switch. The most common application for these outputs is for low voltage controlled contactors or relays, but they may also be used as an interface to other systems. For each UIO module, the digital outputs can be either all triac version or all pilot relay version. Triac digital outputs are capable of switching 24 Vac only, while pilot relay digital outputs can switch either 24 Vac or 24 Vdc. Universal I/O module universal input specifications Each UIO module has eight low voltage 2-wire universal inputs available for use. Typically, these inputs are used for analog photo light sensors or thermostats. Universal inputs are capable of registering 0 20 ma or 0 5 Vdc signals from devices terminated to them. These inputs are normally pulled up to +5 Vdc. When used as a digital input, an ON condition is indicated when less than 0.2 volts are detected on the input. Mount input devices no more than 500 feet (153m) from the UIO module. Terminate with 18 AWG stranded copper wire. Universal I/O module analog output specifications Each UIO module is equipped with three low voltage 2-wire analog outputs. These analog outputs have a variety of uses, but are commonly used for control of 0 10 Vdc dimmable ballasts. There is also an onboard +15 Vdc source to power the units attached to the analog outputs. For information on 0 10 Vdc dimmable ballast control see technical document TD E. On-board status indicators Located on the right of the UIO-8 module are two blocks of status LEDs. These LEDs are tied to the 12 dedicated digital inputs. When the input circuit is closed, the corresponding LED will illuminate. There are also eight LEDs for digital outputs. When output is ON, the correct LED will illuminate. In addition to the eight digital input LEDs, each universal I/O module is complete with a power LED and an LED that flashes to indicate communication activity. RS-485 communication port The RS-485 communication port has two functions: The first is to allow for on-site maintenance programming of a UIO module. The technician uses a laptop or pocket PC with proper interface cabling and Pow-R-Command software to connect directly to the UIO via the communication port. For more information on the use of a pocket PC with Pow-R-Command 1000 controllers, see technical document TD E. The RS-485 port may also be used as an optional network connection. Network connections are typically made using the appropriate removable terminal block (see Figure 2), but, alternately, the communication port may be used. 4 Programming a universal I/O module UIO modules can be programmed either through the network or locally at the device. Each module is given a unique address by the user so it can be identified and controlled through software. Further, the controller s address will allow it to be targeted by other controllers on the network. See technical document TD E for information on the Pow-R-Command 1000 network. A database can be created for each UIO module in the network. The database defines the device names, types of desired analog input and output conversions, alarm conditions, and desired control operations. Databases can be written to and stored on PC storage devices and downloaded to the UIO or written directly to the module. The UIO module s battery backed-up RAM will retain the database if there is a loss of power to the module. Programming capabilities in a universal I/O module In programming a UIO, the user defines the parameters. Parameters that can be established in a program include: Fifty individual time schedules Adjustment for daylight savings and sunrise/sunset (Astro) Time schedules that are based on a 365-day calendar year with adjustment for Leap Year Sixteen (16) repeating or single-shot holidays Communication of input status to other controllers on the network Transmit/receive commands to/from other controllers on the network Mounting options for the universal I/O module The universal I/O module can be mounted in several ways. These include: Mounting in a Pow-R-Command 100 panelboard Mounting in a Pow-R-Command 1000 relay cabinet or control cabinet Mounting remotely in a separate NEMA enclosure Mounting in a Pow-R-Command 100 panelboard As an option, each Pow-R-Command 100 panelboard can be built to include a 7X expansion chassis. The 7X expansion chassis provides a class 2 environment suitable for mounting additional control cards, most commonly, a switch override controller. To mount a universal I/O module in a 7X expansion chassis, a carrier board is installed. Power and network connections to the carrier board are taken from the control bus in the panelboard and extended from the carrier board to the UIO module as shown in Figure 3. Mounting in a Pow-R-Command 100 relay cabinet or control cabinet These enclosures have the ability to securely and safely mount three Pow-R-Command 100 controllers. When the UIO module is mounted in either of these enclosures, it is attached to a carrier board that mounts to the controller ports. The carrier board draws power and network signal from the main control bus. Power and network connections to the UIO module are extended from the carrier board as shown in Figure 3. Remotely mounted in a separate NEMA enclosure As an option, the UIO module can be mounted in a NEMA enclosure. This allows the module to be conveniently mounted, and easily retrofitted into a facility. When mounting the UIO module in a separate enclosure, a 24 Vac source must be provided for operating power. If the UIO module is connected to the Pow-R-Command 1000 network, the network connection is completed at the terminal shown in Figure 2 on page 3. Please note that the universal I/O module is a class 2 device. Contact with class 1 voltage will damage the module and, possibly, devices terminated to it. Universal I/O module in a Pow-R-Command 1000 network The UIO is capable of operating as a stand-alone device, but is most commonly connected to the Pow-R-Command network. There are two means of connecting the UIO to the network: Through a carrier board Directly to the terminals on the UIO The first method of connection is used when the UIO module is mounted in a Pow-R-Command 100 or 1000 panelboard, relay cabinet, or control cabinet. The connection to the network is made through the carrier board as described in the previous sections of this document concerning mounting the UIO module. See Figure 3 for illustration. Direct network connection is made to the UIO when the module is mounted in a separate enclosure. This connection is made to the network terminals on the UIO module as shown in Figure 2 on page 3. Applications for the universal I/O module The UIO module is useful for expanding the capabilities of a Pow-R- Command system. However, it may also be used as a stand-alone device used to schedule and control digital and analog outputs. The universal I/O module has on-board memory and processing power. This allows it to store and execute the user defined programs created through the simple graphics based screens of the Pow-R- Command software. Because it has on-board memory and processing power, the UIO module can function as a stand-alone controller to control separately mounted devices such as contactors, relays, and dimmable electronic ballasts. 4 EATON CORPORATION Cutler-Hammer Pow-R-Command 1000 universal I/O module Technical Data TD E Effective: February 2009
