4 Introduction The Trek is designed to precisely measure surface/volume resistance on a wide variety of conductive, dissipative, and insulative materials. The Model employs a measurement technique which conforms to several ANSI/ESD Association standards for measuring surface resistance and surface resistivity including STM2.1 for garments, STM4.1 for work surfaces, STM7.1 for flooring, STM11.12 for volume resistance measurements, STM11.11 for planar materials, and STM11.13 for two point resistance measurement. A variety of measuring probe-electrode configurations are available for making surface resistance, resistivity or volume resistance measurements. 5 Introduction (cont.) The Model features exceptional measurement accuracy and the wide measurement ranges of 10 3 to ohms. Measured resistance values are clearly displayed on a high-contrast LCD display using scientific notation. The electrode voltage for the measurement probe(s) is selectable for 10 V or 100 V operation to conform to the individual requirements of the ANSI/ESD Association standards and testing conditions. The selected test voltage is indicated on the LCD display. The Model is lightweight and portable, and can be operated from internal batteries or connected to an AC line power source using an optional battery eliminator. Safety Symbols This symbol warns of the danger of electric shock. This symbol represents the low voltage category for the operation of the unit and the need for careful operation. 3

6 Operation 1. Power The I button is the ON switch and the O button is the OFF switch. All probe and ground connections should be made before unit is turned ON. POWER For Battery Operation, two (2) 9 Volt batteries (ANSI/NEDA 1604 IEC 6R61/6LR61, or equivalent) provide 6 hours of power for portable operation. For AC Line Operation, use an optional AC to DC adapter. The adapter output connector is a female type 2.1 mm DC power plug for V DC at 350 ma. 2. Test Voltage Ranges Test voltage ranges are selectable between 10 volts and 100 volts. This is the voltage which is applied to the sample under test. TEST VOLTAGE 1 0V 1 00V The test current limit is limited to less than 13 ma while in the 10 V range and less than 1.7 ma while in the 100 V range. 4

7 3. Test Probes/Accessories The Trek will operate with the following probes and accessories (purchased separately): Model 152BP-5P: [2.27 kg. (5 lb.)] Test Probes (set of two probes) are available for performing surface resistance measurements including ANSI/ESD-STM4.1 standards (point-to-point or resistance to ground measurements). Model 152P-CR-1: [2.27 kg. (5 lb.)] Concentric Ring Probe Used for performing surface/volume resistance measurements per ANSI/ESD-STM11-11 and STM11-12 standards. A three (3) position switch selects surface resistance or volume resistance measurements either with or without a guarded outer electrode. Model 152P-2P: probe performs measurements on surface areas too small to be measured with conventional probes. Resistance Probes, Model 152AP-3mm x 25.4mm: Set of two miniature probes [P/N 17540] can be handheld and randomly positioned. Test Plate Set: The use of these optional plates are described in the ESD STM11.12 standard and in IEC Conductive Plate (5" x 5"/127 mm x 127 mm) A stainless steel conductive plate (with a mini banana plug connector). Insulative Plate (5.4" x 5.4"/ 137 mm x 137 mm) Acts as an insulative surface. Walking Test Adapter Kit: The Walking Test Adapter allows analysis of resistance levels on the human body [STM 97.1]. 5

8 4. Probe Connections Concentric Ring Probe (152P-CR-1) A multi-pin connector is provided for connecting the cable to the optional TREK Concentric Ring probe (152P-CR-1). A three (3) position switch on the probe selects either SURFACE resistance or VOLUME resistance measurements either with a GUARDED or UNGUARDED outer electrode. See page 12. Test Voltage Terminal (Black) This connects to the black terminal of the 2.27 kg. (5 lb.) passive test probe (152BP-5P) or the black terminal of the 152P-2P probe. Shield Ground Terminal (Green) This connection is the Earth Ground, or ground reference terminal. For low noise measurements, the material to be tested should be placed on an insulative support surface (the surface resistance of the support surface should be greater than 1.0 x ), and the support surface should be placed on a ground plane. Both the ground plane and the Shield ground terminal should be connected to Earth Ground. In addition, when using an external power supply (any power source for the Model other than batteries), it is recommended to connect the Shield Ground terminal to earth ground. Input Terminal (Red) The red terminal of the 2.27 kg. (5 lb.) passive test probe (152BP-5P) is connected to this input or the red terminal of the 152P-2P probe. Warning: Do not touch the bottom surface of the probes while instrument is turned ON. These surfaces can be charged to 100 volts. 6

9 5. Measurement Sampling During resistance measurements of materials it is common that the material resistive properties change with time as a result of having voltages applied. This change in resistance will inherently change the measurement value obtained with the Model A measurement sampling feature provides stable measurements at the end of a specified period of time after application of voltage to the material under test. This sampling technique is relevant to references in the ESDA standards that refer to an "electrification period" which, for the 152-1, is set at 5 sec for a 10 V test range and 12 sec for a 100 V test range. A 100 V electrification period is typically the average of five measurements that are made with a standard resistance of 1X The measurement is taken when the unit stabilizes within ±5% of the resistance value. After the fivemeasurement average is obtained, an additional 5 seconds are added (average of electrification periods + 5). Perform the following steps to activate the measurement sampling feature: 1) At turn on, depress the 10 V and "Power" buttons simultaneously (depress the 100 V and "Power" button simultaneously if using 100 V). 2) Continue to depress the buttons until the words, "Electrification Period Enabled" appear on the LCD display. Release. 3) The meter will begin making measurements. The display will sample and hold the measurement after 5 seconds (or after 12 seconds in the 100 V test). Note: The "R" in the "R=" setting on the LCD display will flash between "R" and "r" to indicate that the measurement is being held. 4) To make another measurement, lift the probe electrodes off of the surface until the "R/r" remains at "R" consistently and is no longer flashing. Lower the electrodes back onto the measured surface to repeat the process. 7

10 Operating Procedures Make all connections with the power off. 1. Probe connections: When using the optional 2.27 kg. (5 lb.) passive test probes, connect the red terminal to the INPUT receptacle and the black terminal to the TEST VOLTAGE receptacle on the Model meter. OR When using the Model 152P-CR-1 concentric ring probe, use the multi-pin connector on the meter. OR When using the Model 152P-2P two-point resistance probe, connect the three plugs into the unit terminals using the color coded connector as a guide. The red connector will be plugged into the red input receptacle, etc. Note: If an external power supply is being used to power the Model or large resistive materials are being tested, connect the Model shield ground terminal (green) on the front panel to earth ground. 11 Operating Procedures (cont.) 2. Grounding Guidelines: The Model may be grounded when the object to be measured is isolated from ground. An example of this is when the object to be measured is resting on an insulative surface that isolates the object from ground. In this instance, grounding the Model provides shielding from extraneous electric fields and other noise sources. Ground the by connecting the green Shield/Ground terminal on the front of the Model to a ground point. In addition, the Model should be grounded when the unit is powered by a source other than batteries (i.e. AC/DC converter). Furthermore, when measuring resistance above 10 7, grounding the unit can result in more repetitive and stable measurements. 3. Turn the unit ON by pressing the I (ON) button. 4. Select a test voltage range by pressing either the 10 V or 100 V button. General measurement ranges are as follows. For Resistance ( ) probes (152BP-5P/152P-CR-1/152P-2P): 10 V Range to ohms 100 V Range to ohms 9

12 Operating Procedures (cont.) 5. Place the probe(s) on the material to be tested and read the LCD on the meter. The LCD will display the resistance value of the surface being measured. However, if the LCD on the Model reads: R out of range: L low or R out of range: H high refer to the chart below: LCD MESSAGE When at 10 V TEST VOLTAGE When at 100 V TEST VOLTAGE R OUT OF RANGE: L The resistance value of the surface being measured is below 10 3 ohms. The resistance value of the surface being measured is below 10 5 ohms. 10 V TEST VOLTAGE range should be selected. R OUT OF RANGE: H The resistance value of the surface being measured is above Recommend 100 V TEST VOLTAGE range should be selected. The resistance value of the surface being measured is above ohms. 10

13 General Maintenance Cleaning the Instrument Turn OFF and remove any line power from instrument prior to cleaning or inspecting. Clean the Model as operating conditions require. Clean the exterior of the instrument with a soft cloth dampened with water. Use only water to dampen the cloth. The use of solvents may damage the finish or plastic components. Cleaning the Probes Unplug probes prior to cleaning. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean probe contact surfaces. Battery Installation Use care when snapping the battery caps onto the batteries and inserting them into the unit. Orientate the batteries to minimize any stresses placed on the battery caps and their wires. 11

14 Model 152P-CR-1 Probe Measurement The Trek Model 152P-CR-1 Resistance Measurement System is capable of measuring surface and volume resistance in materials as per IEC or ESDA standards which use a concentric ring probe. A three (3) position switch on the probe selects for SURFACE resistance measurements or VOLUME resistance measurements either with a GUARDED or UNGUARDED outer electrode. In addition to the Model 152P-CR-1 concentric ring probe [CN 17529], Trek offers a Test Plate Set [C/N 17530] consisting of a stainless steel conductive plate and an insulative plate. Model 152P-CR-1 switch is positioned at VOLUME [UNGUARDED] designation. As per ESD STM11.12 standard, the outer ring is unguarded with no ground connection. As per IEC standard, when performing volume measurements the outer ring is guarded (connected to common in the meter). Model 152P-CR-1 switch is positioned at VOLUME [GUARDED] designation. 23 WARRANTY New instruments sold by TREK, INC. (hereinafter called the Company ) are warranted only as stated below: Subject to the exceptions and upon the conditions specified below, the Company agrees to correct, either by repair, or in the Company s sole discretion, by replacement, any defect of material or workmanship which develops within one year from the date of original purchase by the customer (user), provided that investigation and factory inspection by the Company discloses that such defect developed under normal and proper use. Repair or replacement are the exclusive remedies under this warranty (batteries are not included under this warranty). The exceptions and conditions mentioned are as follows: (a) The Company makes no warranty concerning components or accessories not manufactured by it. (b) The Company shall be released from all obligations under its warranty in the event that repairs or modifications are made by persons other than its own or authorized personnel, unless such repairs by others are made with the prior written consent of the Company.
