2 Modular Construction The Chromalox 1040 is a DIN-rail-mounted multi-loop PID control system that can operate in a stand-alone system or in a PLC environment. Its simplicity is based on its modular construction: one communications module and any combination of up to 8 control modules. With numerous state-of-the-art control features and 100 ms real-time scan rates, reliable single-loop control performance and integrity are never sacrificed. The communications module is a supervisory module connected directly to the DIN rail. It provides power to the control modules and contains a back-up of the system configuration data. It also manages the communications with external devices. Modular Versatility The communications module is available in any of five different protocol options: Modbus, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS and Modbus/TCP. The control modules are available with 1, 3, and 4 loops. Therefore, using from one to a full complement of 8 control modules, any number of loops from 1 to 32 can be achieved. If more than 32 loops are required, multiple systems can be linked together. Heater break inputs are available on 1- and 3-loop modules. With the Chromalox 1040 control system only the loops required need to be purchased. The control modules are independently managed by the communications module. They are connected to the DIN rail via an interconnect module that provides power and communications from the communications module. 2

3 Space-Saving Footprint Panel space can be precious, and the modular design of the Chromalox 1040 controller system makes the most of what space is available. Even a system of 8 control modules providing up to 32 loops measures only a little over 8 inches (206 millimeters) wide. The modules height is only 4 inches (100 millimeters). Reduced Installation Time and Cost Installing and wiring banks of discrete temperature controllers can be chaotic with all the panel cuts and wiring. With the Chromalox 1040 controller system, there are fewer panel cuts, less wiring, and less setup time. This can significantly reduce installation time and cost. Rapid, Easy Setup 8 in. (206 mm) Programming is centralized. With easy-to-use point-andclick configuration software, up 32 loops can be set up via a dedicated bus port in less than 30 minutes versus hours or days. A setup wizard configures the system (input type, setpoint, alarms etc.) and then the configuration can be copied to other loops in the system via drag and drop. Users can also go straight to specific parameters to make any changes required. Access is available to all control loops or an HMI. Improved Performance vs. PLC/PC PLC capacity is freed up by outsourcing loop control to the Chromalox 1040 for more improved temperature control. Reaching setpoint and reaction to process disturbance is handled more efficiently. On-demand and auto-tuning eliminate the need to manually tune oops. True, Simple Integration into Existing Control Systems Setting up communication between the Chromalox 1040 system and the master device is simplicity itself. The Chromalox 1040 control system provides simple, com-plete availability of all parameters to the PLC/PC or HMI as required. It eliminates the need for multiple customer interfaces and incorporates user-specified parameters into the PLC. The parameters to be presented to the master device are selected via drag and drop, then the configuration software automatically generates a custom file (e.g. a GSD on PROFIBUS or ESD for DeviceNet) that can be imported into the master device, enabling simple integration into other parts of the control scheme for data collection analysis. Equipment can be managed and monitored using one device versus many. Rapid Hot-Swap and Auto-Configure A module can be removed, replaced, automatically re-configured and back in service in under 30 seconds without turning off system power. There is no need to touch the remaining control modules, allowing them to continue functioning when any of the other modules are removed. Minimize Risk of Loss or Damage If the fieldbus network goes down for a user-definable time, the Chromalox 1040 control system can be pre-set to inhibit its loops or to continue independently to minimize risk of loss or damage. 3
