OVERVIEW The CF332 card is an isolated dual RS232 Serial card with the following features: Tiny TypeII Compact Flash form factor for CF+ equipped PDAs, Handheld PCs, laptops etc. Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, CE 1, PocketPC 1 compatible using O.S. standard drivers Industry standard register set RS232 interfaces are isolated from the host computer by up to +/- 50V at DC to 60Hz relative to the host s 0V. Data rates up to 115.2K Baud. Works at 3.3V, saves power Hardware modem control line support (CTS and RTS) Compatible with all standard serial comms software Works in PC-Card slots using Compact Flash adapter (not supplied as standard but available as an option) Standard PC I/O port decode for COM1 to COMn Any IO port and interrupt decode option for best pnp flexibility Low power consumption. Supplied with 300mm dual DB9-male terminated cable with standard com port pin-outs. This guide aims to familiarise you with the way that the CF332 works and so will help you to maximise its performance in your application. Elan will be happy to quote for either customisation of the CF332 if its exact specifications do not quite meet your needs, or to create complete application software. 1 CE and PocketPC allow operation with one port at a time when using the standard OS driver. ABOUT THE CF332 The CF332 card is an isolated dual RS232 serial card with Elan s own compatible UART ASIC device, called the VPU The serial data and control lines are buffered using isolated RS232 drivers that allow the RS232 interfaces to be offset from the host computer s 0V by up to +/-50V DC to 60Hz. This is ideal for industrial applications where the connection to remote equipment may be over several meters of cable, which can induce significant offset voltages and cause loss of data or unreliable transfers. The ports behave just like any other RS232 interface in all other respects. Each port has TX, RX, CTS and RTS signals, and there is a common ISOGND connection shared by the two ports. Industry standard baud rates up to 115.2K baud are supported, together with 16-byte deep TX and RX FIFOs. For further information please refer to the VPU16551 data sheet available from our website, The CF332 conforms to the industry standard Compact Flash+ interface that allows connection of peripherals to the system bus of a laptop, handheld PC or PDA. The CF+ specification extends the earlier memory-only Compact Flash interface to allow I/O devices and extra power for the card. 5 3. INSTALLING THE CF DOS & Windows 3.1x Most DOS enabler software was abandoned before true multifunction cards were available. The CF332 is therefore not supported in either DOS or Windows 3.1x. 3.2 Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Me, 2000, XP The generic serial drivers in these Operating Systems support the CF332. No extra driver software is needed but you will need to install Card Center Pro, or use the INF file that can be found on the first disk of the installation set. Installing the supplied Card Center Pro software that comes with your product will copy the INF file into the Windows/INF folder. Windows will use this INF file to recognise the CF332 card. Alternatively, when Window s does a first-time search for the driver for the CF332 card, you can use Disk#1 from the CCP set. After installation, each of the ports will appear as a COM port under the device manager. In Windows XP, you can adjust the COM port numbering using the <Port Settings><Advanced> control in the Device Manager by double clicking entries for the First CF332 Com Port and Second CF332 Com Port. Under Windows XP SP1, you will need to apply a hot fix from Microsoft to correct a bug that causes the ports to appear OK but be non-functional. Please contact Elan support for assistance, or see our web site. 3.3 Windows CE, PocketPC There is no need to install any software for Windows CE or PocketPC. Simply insert the CF332 card and two entries will appear in a list when you go to set up a Connection. The standard OS drivers allow use of only one port at a time. CF332 REGISTER INTERFACE Full details of the CF332 s register interface can be found in the VPU16551 data sheet, available at Elan s website For reference, the CF332 behaves as a 3.3V multi-function card. There are two VPU16551 devices in the card that will each be allocated its own I/O space and a shared IRQ. The card conforms to the PC Card Multi Function Standard, having two sets of card configuration registers and IOBASE registers to decode incoming I/O space hits. The card also fully implements the PC Card Standard defined method for IRQ sharing, using Intr and IntrAck bits in the card s CSRs in attribute space. Elan Digital Systems Ltd. 6 CF332 USER S

HARDWARE SPECIFICATION 5.1 PINOUT The CF332 is supplied with a 300mm long Type49 cable that terminates with two DB9 Male connector with female screwlocks (to match the port at the back of a PC) The pin-out below applies to the DB9 male connectors on the supplied cable, Port1 and Port2 is marked on the cables. 8 5.2 ELECTRICAL All figures quoted are typical 25 C RS232 SIGNALS: UART CLOCK SPEED: ISOLATION: SCAVENGED POWER: UNUSED SIGNALS: Typical output level ±5.5V (open circuit voltages). TX, RX, CTS and RTS are supported on each port MHz, max baud rate 115.2Kbaud Isolation is defined between ISOGND and host 0V supply (metal case of card and cable shield braid) and can be up to +/-50V, DC to 60Hz. The two ports share a common ground (ISOGND): no isolation exists between the two ports. The isolation driver circuit will only supply enough power to guarantee correct RS232 signal operation into 3Kohm loads on TX and RTS. Using terminal equipment that scavenges power from the RS232 signals may not work.
