7 Safety Intended Use The V-408 PIMag linear stage is a laboratory device as defined by DIN EN It is intended for indoor use and use in an environment which is free of dirt, oil, and lubricants. In accordance with its design and realization, the V-408 is intended for single-axis positioning, adjusting and shifting of loads at different velocities. There are two versions of the V-408, see p. 9. They differ regarding the travel range. The V-408 has an iron-core 3-phase linear motor and a position sensor. Since the motor of the V-408 does not feature any self-locking the V-408 is to be mounted in horizontal orientation only. The V-408 is not intended for applications in areas in which a failure would present severe risks to human beings or the environment. The intended use of the V-408 is only possible when installed and in conjunction with a suitable controller (p. 12). The controller is not included in the scope of delivery of the V-408. The controller must provide the required operating voltages. To ensure proper performance of the servo-control system, the controller must also be able to read out and process the signals from the sensors. For information about the controller refer to its separate documentation. General Safety Instructions The V-408 is built according to state-of-the-art technology and recognized safety standards. Improper use can result in personal injury and/or damage to the V-408. Only use the V-408 for its intended purpose, and only use it if it is in a good working order. Read the user manual. Immediately eliminate any faults and malfunctions that are likely to affect safety. The operator is responsible for the correct installation and operation of the V-408. 14 Installation General Notes on Installation CAUTION Strong magnetic field impairs cardiac pacemakers! The V-408 features permanent magnets that impair the reliability of cardiac pacemakers. Make sure that persons who have a cardiac pacemaker have no access to the V-408. CAUTION Risk of cuts and crushing! When the extended motion platform moves to the middle position, the pressure exerted by the motion platform may be very high. If fingers or limbs get caught between the motion platform and the base body of the V-408 or a fixed part or obstacle during operation, there is a risk of minor injury from cuts and crushing. Use protective structures to keep limbs away from areas in which they could be seized by moving parts. Observe the safety distances in accordance with the applicable standards when installing protective structures. CAUTION Attraction of magnetizable objects! The magnets on the bottom side of the motion platform of the V-408 can attract magnetizable objects, such as loose screws. Attracted objects can damage the V-408 or cause minor injury from cuts and crushing. Make sure that there are no movable, magnetizable objects within a radius of at least 10 cm around the motion range of the platform of the V-408. Damage to magnetically sensitive objects! The magnets on the bottom side of the motion platform of the V-408 can damage magnetically sensitive objects such as magnetic data carriers and electronic devices. Make sure that there are no magnetically sensitive objects within a radius of at least 10 cm around the motion range of the platform of the V-408. Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Auf der Roemerstrasse 1, Karlsruhe, Germany Page 14 / 40

15 Heating up of the V-408 during operation! The heat produced during operation of the V-408 can affect your application and it can damage the V-408. Install the V-408 so that the application is not affected by the dissipated heat. Ensure sufficient ventilation at the place of installation. Make sure that the complete bottom side of the V-408 is in contact with the surface on which the V-408 is mounted. Impermissible mechanical loading! Impermissible mechanical loading orientation can damage the V-408. Avoid push and pull forces >2.5 N on the motion platform. Damage due to collisions! Setting Up a Multi-Axis System The V-408 can be used in XY systems. Designations in these instructions: Lower stage: Forms the basis of the multi-axis system (X axis); is mounted on a surface Upper stage: Forms the Y axis of the multi-axis system; is mounted on the lower stage rotated by 90 Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Auf der Roemerstrasse 1, Karlsruhe, Germany Page 19 / 40

20 General Information on Setting Up a Multi-Axis System Impermissibly high load on the stages! In an XY system, the stage for the Y-axis must be moved as well. Impermissibly high loads interfere with the motion and can damage the stages. Include the mass of the moved stage in the calculation of the load to be moved. For all stages in a multi-axis system: Do not exceed the maximum permissible load. Protruding screw heads! Protruding screw heads can damage the V-408. Ensure that the screw heads do not protrude from countersunk holes so that they do not interfere with the stage motion. Screws that are too long! Screws that are inserted too deeply can damage the lower stage. Observe the depth of the mounting holes in the motion platform (p. 34) of the lower stage. Only use screws of the correct length for the respective mounting holes. INFORMATION Any model of the V-408 can be used as lower or upper stage. If a V is to be used as the upper stage, an adapter is required, see "Accessories" (p. 11). Setting up the XY System without an Adapter The XY system is set up without an adapter when a V is used as upper stage. 26 Start-Up and Operation General Notes on Start-Up and Operation Damage from transport lock that has not been removed! Damage can occur to the V-408 if the transport lock (p. 9) of the V-408 has not been removed and a motion is commanded. Remove the transport lock before you start up the system consisting of the V-408 and the controller. Damage due to unsuitable servo parameters! When unsuitable servo parameters are used, the voice coil drive can be damaged by excessive heating up or by the platform moving with high velocity to the hard stop. In addition, unsuitable servo parameters reduce the accuracy of positioning. Check whether the servo parameters are suitable for the given load, i.e. whether you notice excessive heating up or whether the platform moves to the hard stop. If required adjust the servo parameters. For how to change parameters in general refer to the manual of the C-891 controller. If you have questions regarding adjusting the servo parameters contact our customer service (p. 31). Heating up of the V-408 during operation! The heat produced during operation of the V-408 can affect your application and it can damage the V-408. Ensure sufficient ventilation at the place of installation. Ensure that the average continuous current and the peak current do not exceed the permissible values (p. 31). The heat produced during operation of the V-408 can affect your application. Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Auf der Roemerstrasse 1, Karlsruhe, Germany Page 26 / 40

27 Undesired displacement due to lack of self-locking! The drive of the V-408 does not have any self-locking. Switching off or rebooting the controller or switching off the servo mode for the axis can therefore lead to undesired displacements of the motion platform, e.g. due to the weight force of the moving mass. As a result, the motion platform can move to the hard stop with a high velocity, and/or collisions between the V-408, the load to be moved and the environment are possible. Only mount the V-408 in horizontal orientation. Ensure that the end of the travel range is approached at low velocity and with low force. Operating voltage too high or incorrectly connected! Operating voltages that are too high or incorrectly connected can cause damage to the V-408. Do not exceed the operating voltage range (p. 33) for which the V-408 is specified. Only operate the V-408 when the operating voltage is properly connected; see "Pin Assignment" (p. 39). Damage due to collisions! Collisions can damage the V-408, the load to be moved, and the surroundings. Stop the motion immediately if a controller malfunction occurs. If possible, adapt the travel range limits of your mechanical system in the software that you use for commanding the motion. Damage due to high velocity and travel to the hard stop with maximum force! Travel to the hard stop with maximum force or at high velocity can cause damage, excessive heat or considerable wear to the mechanics. Stop the motion immediately if a controller malfunction occurs. Ensure that the end of the travel range is approached at low velocity and with low force. Set the control signal so that the moving part does not stop abruptly or try to continue moving at the end of the travel range. Determine the maximum velocity for your application. Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Auf der Roemerstrasse 1, Karlsruhe, Germany Page 27 / 40

28 Damage to the V-408 and the load due to oscillations The optimum values of the servo-control parameters of the controller depend on the application and the moved mass. Unsuitable servo-control parameter settings of the controller can cause the V-408 to oscillate. Oscillations can damage the V-408 and/or the load affixed to it. If the V-408 is oscillating (unusual operating noise), immediately switch off the servo mode for the axis on the controller or switch off the controller. Only switch on the servo mode for the axis on the controller after you have modified the servo-control parameter settings; see the manual of the controller. Operating the V-408 Requirements You have read and understood the general notes on start-up and operation (p. 26). You have read and understood the user manual of the controller. You have properly installed the V-408 (p. 14). The transport lock has been removed (p. 13). The controller and the required PC software have been installed. All connections with the controller have been established (see user manual of the controller). Operating the V-408 Follow the instructions in the manual of the controller (p. 12) used for start-up and operation of the V-408. Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Auf der Roemerstrasse 1, Karlsruhe, Germany Page 28 / 40

29 Maintenance General Notes on Maintenance Malfunction due to incorrect cleaning! Liquid inside the stage due to incorrect cleaning or condensation will render the V-408 inoperable. If required: Clean the surface of the V-408 with a towel that is lightly dampened with a mild cleanser or disinfectant. Avoid condensation in the environment of the V-408. Damage from opening the V-408! The V-408 is maintenance-free. Opening the housing causes damage to the V-408. Only loosen screws according to the instructions in this document. Do not open the V-408. Performing a Maintenance Run Frequent motions over a limited travel range can cause the lubricant to be unevenly distributed on the drive screw. Carry out a maintenance run over the entire travel range at regular intervals, at least after a period of six months. The more often motions are carried out over a limited travel range, the shorter the time between the maintenance runs has to be. Preparing the V-408 for Transport Mechanical overload from incorrect handling! An impermissible mechanical load on the V-408 due to transportation without a transport lock can damage the motion platform of the V-408 as well as cause accuracy losses. Only ship the V-408 in the original packaging and with a transport lock installed. Tools and accessories Transport lock (p. 9) Hex key AF 1.5 Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Auf der Roemerstrasse 1, Karlsruhe, Germany Page 29 / 40

30 Preparing the V-408 for transport Fasten the transport lock to the base body and motion platform (p. 9) with 2 M2 screws. Cleaning the V-408 Requirements You have disconnected the stage from the controller. Cleaning the stage When necessary, clean the stage surface with a cloth lightly dampened with a mild cleanser or disinfectant. Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Auf der Roemerstrasse 1, Karlsruhe, Germany Page 30 / 40
