3 Installing Your Duplex Printing Accessory English Introduction This guide describes how to install your Duplex Printing Accessory. This accessory allows you to print on both sides of the paper and is designed to work with the HP LaserJet 5, 5M and 5N printers; it will not work with other HP LaserJet printers. The three tasks for installing this duplex accessory include: Removing the rear door from the printer Attaching the duplex printing accessory to the printer Verifying duplex printing When performing the following steps, refer to the illustrations on the front cover foldout. Prior to installing the duplex printing accessory remove any packing material from the accessory. Make sure all tape is removed. During installation you will need a pair of pliers. Removing the rear door from the printer Step 11 is critical and must be performed. 1 Turn the printer OFF. 2 Unplug the power cord and cables from the printer. 3 Open the rear door of the printer by pushing down on the latch at the top of the door and swinging the door down. 4 Locate the position where the rear door strap attaches to the printer. 5 Remove the rear door strap by (1) using pliers (or fingers) to pull the top tab of the door strap slightly downward and out, until it is clear of the hole, (2) pulling the door strap upward to release the lower portion of it from the printer. 6 Open the door until the key on the left door pin (1) is aligned with the keyway on the printer body (2) then slide the door to the left. 4 7 Remove the door by (1) pulling the right side of the door away from the printer, approximately 1/2 inch (15mm), and (2) sliding the door to the right to free it from the printer. Do not discard the rear door. If you ever need to operate the printer without the duplex printing accessory installed, the rear door must be reinstalled for the printer to operate. Attaching the Duplex Printing Accessory to the Printer If Tray 3 (the optional 500-sheet lower cassette) is also installed, the duplex printing accessory should be placed on top of the lower cassette first. This is similar to how the printer is placed on top of the duplex printing accessory, as shown in step 9. 8 Raise the back of the duplex printing accessory into approximately a 45 degree position as shown in illustration 8. 9 Place the duplex printing accessory onto the surface where it will be located for operation.the printer is heavy, and it is recommended that two people lift it. Gently lower the printer onto the duplex printing accessory. Ensure that the printer is positioned squarely on the accessory so that the two alignment pins and the connector on the accessory fit into the printer. You may find it easier to align and lower the left side of the printer onto the duplex printing accessory first then lower the right side down. 10 Close the rear door of the duplex printing accessory. 11 IMPORTANT - plug the power cord that is attached to the duplex printing accessory into the printer (see illustration 11) and plug the power cord from the wall into the duplex printing accessory. 12 Reconnect the computer cables to the printer. If you do not plug the power cords in correctly, the printer will not print duplex. Do not plug the power cord from the wall into the printer. Plug it into the duplex printing accessory. Warning Once the Duplex Printing Accessory and printer have been assembled, do not attempt to lift or move the combined unit. Separate the printer from the duplex accessory before lifting or moving the printer. 2 Installing Your Duplex Printing Accessory EN

5 Verifying Duplex Operation You will need to select Duplex printing either: in your software application, or, if your application does not provide a selection for duplex printing, using the printer control panel (DUPLEX=ON*). If your application supports duplex printing, you can verify duplex operation by printing a test file directly from your application (and disregard the following steps). If your application does not support duplex, use the following steps to select duplex using the control panel: English 1 Make sure all the cables are connected (refer to step 11), then turn the printer ON. 2 Press [Menu >] repeatedly until PRINTING MENU is displayed on the control panel. 3 Press [Item >] repeatedly until DUPLEX=OFF* appears. If DUPLEX=OFF* does not appear, refer to Troubleshooting on the next page. Also, double check to ensure that you plugged the power cords in correctly (refer to step 11 in the previous section). If the power cords are switched, the printer will not recognize the duplex printing accessory and will not print in duplex mode. 4 Press [Value >] until DUPLEX=0N* appears then press [Select] and then press [GO]. 5 Send a print job to the printer from your software application. For more information on how to perform duplex printing, refer to Printing with the Duplex Unit in Chapter 4 of the HP LaserJet 5, 5M and 5N User s Manual. If the printer does not print duplex, refer to Troubleshooting on the following page. 6 Troubleshooting Symptom DUPLEX=OFF* does not appear in the Printing Menu Paper jams The message REMOVE DUPLEX JAM appears in the printer s display when a jam occurs in the duplexer Printer does not print duplex, prints one side only. Printer does not print job. A rhythmic clicking noise emanates from Tray Verify that the power cords are plugged in correctly (see Illustration 11). 2. Verify that the printer is seated squarely on the duplex printing accessory. Make sure you turn the printer power off and unplug the accessory from the printer before you reseat the printer on the accessory. 3. Verify that you have installed the duplex printing accessory on an HP LaserJet 5, 5M and 5N printer. This accessory is not designed to operate with other HP LaserJet printers. 4. If DUPLEX=OFF* still does not appear in the control panel menu, contact your authorized HP dealer or HP service representative. 1. Open the rear door of the duplex printing accessory and remove any paper from this area. 2. Open the front of the duplex printing accessory and remove any paper from this area. (, to open the front access cover, Tray 2 must be removed from the printer. Also, if any shipping tape was not removed from inside the duplex printing accessory, the front access cover may not open. To check for tape, lift the printer off the duplex printing accessory and look for any unremoved shipping tape on the duplexer.) 3. Refer to Clearing Paper Jams and Paper Jams: Optional Duplex Unit in Chapter 8 of the HP LaserJet 5, 5M and 5N User s Manual for additional information. 1. Check your software application to ensure that duplex is selected. If your application does not provide a selection for duplex, use the printer front control panel to set DUPLEX=ON* (refer to the printer user s manual Chapter 4, Understanding the Control Panel, for additional information on control panel operation). 2. Ensure that only one paper source is selected in your application. For example, if your job prints one page from Tray 1 and the next page(s) from the Tray 2, the printer will not print the job duplex. Make sure that you are not printing an envelope with duplex on. 3. Verify that the power cords are plugged in correctly (refer to step 11 of the installation steps for the duplexer). 4. Make sure your printer is an HP LaserJet 5, 5M or 5N printer. (This accessory will not operate with other HP LaserJet printers.)
