1 Reporting Device Nominal Form Factor (ATA8-ACS) 24 October 2007 Revision 2 Proposal submitter: Wayne Bellamy S.H. 249 Houston, Texas wayne.bellamy@hp.com Reporting Device Nominal Form Factor 1

2 Document Status Revision History (part of ATA8-ACS) Rev Date Description 0 June 04, ) Initial Revision This is an extraction from another proposal (e06176r2: Reporting RPM and Form Factor) to allow RPM acceptance for incorporation into ATA8-ACS. This proposal continues work on the reporting of form factor portion of the earlier proposal. 2) Changes in this proposal revision: - removed everything except criteria for reporting form factor - T13 input (D.C.) requesting to add EIA data back into section starting over again present suggestion and get input from T13 committee in June 19-21, 2007 meeting. - It was requested to remove the SFF column in the form factor table but it was also requested to add the EIA references to section Not certain what is to be done here...(not done). - In form factor table change info at bottom All others to 0Fh to FFh reserved. - Committee input to say 2.5 nominal form factor and xxxmm height in the form factor table. - Committee input to add SFF-8140 values to form factor table. (Could not locate the document anywhere.) 3) : Requested to add the reporting of device cache size to this proposal. 1 October 16, 2007 Incorporate changes as requested by HP senior-level technologist. - Remove cache size from proposal. - Width is important to HP as originally requested. Remove all other form information. Only interested in nominal f/f. - Request less ID Device resource. - Get this into ATA8-ACS since it s a simple edit. 2 October 24, 2007 Proposal approved by T13 committee for incorporation into ATA8-ACS as revised (i.e., e07161r1 to e07161r2). - change code 0h from not specified to not reported - change code 4h to 1.8 inch nominal form factor - change code 5h to Less than 1.8 inch nominal form factor - add code 6h to Fh - Reserved Reporting Device Nominal Form Factor 2

3 1 Introduction Reason for change request: ATA devices can be remotely located in data centers and may be managed by storage management software that recommends appropriate device replacements. As such, the single most important necessity driving this change is to properly facilitate the replacement of a device into a RAID set. Form factor information has been requested to be provided. 2 Scope This proposal requests a simple, informational addition to the ATA8-ACS standard. The request is to provide IDENTIFY DEVICE data resource to support this information. The information requested to be supported by IDENTIFY DEVICE data is the device nominal form factor. 3 Overview This proposal does not request implementation of a feature set for this information. It simply requests information be provided about the ATA end device. As such, it is believed that only the IDENTIFY DEVICE data need be affected. 4 Changes to ACS 4.1 Changes to clause Changes to Approved ANSI References Changes to ANSI References Under Development Changes to Other References 4.2 Changes to clause Changes to Definitions and abbreviations 1 Your Term: Definition.? 1 Your Term: Definition.? 4.3 Changes to clause Overview - Changes to the Feature Set Summary Table Reporting Device Nominal Form Factor 3
