4 Introduction General Information Intended use The Maintenance Unit is an electricallycompressed air-powered device for maintaining hand pieces and attachments for Electric Pen Drive and Air Pen Drive. Only use DePuy Synthes Power Tools accessories to guarantee optimal function of the Maintenance Unit and to guarantee operational reliability of the Electric Pen Drive and the Air Pen Drive. Location of device The DePuy Synthes Power Tools Maintenance Unit is only permitted for storage and operation outside the operating room. It must not be allowed to come into direct or indirect contact with the patient. Warning: The DePuy Synthes Power Tools Maintenance Unit may not be stored or operated in an explosive atmosphere. Disposal of waste The Maintenance Unit may not be disposed in the normal waste, but must be sent back to DePuy Synthes Power Tools for recycling or disposed of according to the facilities recycling program. Warranty The manufacturer assumes no warranty for damages arising from improper use or unauthorized servicing. Only use DePuy Synthes Power Tools Special Oil, for EPD and APD, Other oils can have a toxic effect and can lead to sticking. In this case warranty claims are invalid. Only use original products from DePuy Synthes Power Tools intended for use together with the Maintenance Unit. Damage that arises from using attachments and tools of other manufacturers is not covered by the warranty. 5 Operating Instructions 1 Installation Insert the provided power supply plug into the power supply connector and connect it to a wall outlet. Connect the simple end of the compressed air hose with light pressure into the air connection on the back of the module, then connect the nipple for compressed air to the air supply. Attention: To completely disconnect from AC power, disconnect from the power supply. 2 Starting the Maintenance Station Push the ON/OFF button on the keypad to turn on the Maintenance Station. 6 Operating Instructions 3 Connecting the Drive Unit and Attachments to the Maintenance Station Electric Pen Drive ( ) Open the release ring for attachment on the Drive Unit. Insert the release ring into the far left fitting of the Maintenance Station and push lightly. The Drive Unit will automatically lock into place. Air Pen Drive ( ) To connect the Air Pen Drive handpiece, the Adapter for Maintenance Unit for Air Pen Drive ( ) has to be used. Place the female side of the connector s Adapter on the left of the Maintenance Unit, making sure that the pins on the connector engage in the slotted link on the Adapter and then turn the Adapter clockwise. To apply the handpiece, set the adjustment sleeve to the foot switch position. Then fit the air hose side of the handpiece to the connector by fitting the pins on the Adapter into the grooves in the air hose coupling side of the handpiece and turn the handpiece clockwise. Caution The Air Pen Drive must be set to foot switch position during the lubrication process The Air Pen Drive has to be lubricated through the air inlet/outlet, not through the attachment coupling Attachments The second, third, and fourth fittings from the left are for attachments. 7 Operating Instructions Burr Attachments XL and XXL 20 To connect the Burr Attachment XL 20 ( ) and XXL 20 ( ), the Adaptor for Maintenance Unit for Burr Attachments XL and XXL ( ) has to be used. Place the male side of the Adaptor on the second connector from the left, making sure that the pins on the Adaptor engage in the slotted link on the connector; then turn the Adaptor counterclockwise. 4 Starting the oiling process Close the lid and push the START button to start the oiling process. The oiling procedure will take approximately three minutes when all fittings are occupied. The READY LED will light when the oiling cycle is complete. Attention: Make sure the oil reservoir is filled. 5 Removing the Drive Unit and the attachments Remove the Drive Unit by turning the attachment release ring. Remove the attachments by turning them clockwise and carefully pulling them out. Repeat for additional attachments. DePuy Synthes Power Tools recommends changing the filter every time the oil reservoir is filled.

8 Care and Maintenance 1 Filling the oil reservoir Instruments Maintenance Kit for Electric Pen Drive Maintenance Station Oil Dispenser with Synthes Oil If the oil reservoir is empty, the ERROR LED will light continuously. Open the oil reservoir by turning the cap counterclockwise and refill with DePuy Synthes Electric Pen Drive Oil. Attention: Use only DePuy Synthes Power Tools Electric Pen Drive Oil. Other oils can have a toxic effect, and can lead to sticking. Using other oils will void the warranty. 2 Changing the filter If excessive oil can be seen in the filter, the filter should be changed. DePuy Synthes Power Tools recommends changing the filter every time the oil reservoir is filled. To change the filter, open the lid, remove the old filter, and fit the new filter into the bottom of the Maintenance Station. 9 Care and Maintenance Maintenance Unscrew the bolts on both sides of the Maintenance Station to remove the lid for optimum cleaning. If the Maintenance Station is contaminated, it can be wiped off with a cloth soaked in detergent and/or disinfectant. Attention: The Maintenance Station must not be sterilized. Avoid excessive moisture. In case of damage, please contact your Depuy Synthes Power Tools representative. The manufacturer shall assume no responsibility for damage resulting from improper operation or unauthorized maintenance. 10 Troubleshooting Problem Possible Causes Remedy Problem Possible Causes Remedy After pushing the start button, the error LED lights. The START button only works when the lid is closed. A burr attachment ( ) or craniotome ( ) is placed on the adapters, but the release sleeve is in the unlock position. This blocks the oiling procedure. Close the lid and push the START button again. Turn the release sleeve of the attachment ( or ) to the lock position and push the start button again. The Maintenance Station stops during the oiling procedure and the error LED lights. The lid has been opened during the oiling procedure. Close the lid and repeat the oiling procedure. Error LED lights constantly. The oil level is too low. The air pressure is too low (<4.5 bars/ 65 psi). Fill the oil reservoir. Increase the air pressure to 5 10 bars ( psi). Oiling procedure stopped. Error LED lights constantly. The air pressure is too low (<4.5 bars/65 psi) during the oiling procedure. Open the cover and increase the air pressure to 5 10 bars ( psi). Error LED blinks. Oiling procedure does not start, even though the start button has been pushed. The POWER ON LED lights. The Maintenance Station is defective. No Drive Unit or attachment is plugged into the Maintenance Station, or none is detected. Send the Maintenance Station to your DePuy Synthes Power Tools Service Center. Connect the Drive Unit or attachments properly. Push the START button again.
