2 Application Bulletin Number: 128 Release EN: D09910 Date: 4/19/96 Revision EN: Z27301 Date: 10/2/15 Subject: New 30AA and 31AA Electronic Motor Protection Modules The purpose of this Bulletin is to inform the customer of the key elements in converting from a 15AA or MP50 module to 30AA and 31AA modules. The new modules are UL recognized in UL File SA3745 and are also CSA certified in CSA File LR They are functionally identical to the 15AA/MP50 modules, but there are some differences that are critical in their application and are explained below. 1.0 Use With Series and Parallel Thermal Sensors The 30AA module is used with series sensors (two pin), and the 31AA is used with parallel sensors (four pin). All connections are the same as with the 15AA/MP Wiring and Terminals 2.1 Some of the wiring and terminal identifications are different (see wiring diagrams on Attachment 1). 2.2 The supply voltage terminals on the 15AA and MP50 modules are designated T1 and T2. The 30AA and 31AA supply voltage terminals are designated L1 and L2. Both perform the same function ¾ to supply power to the electronics. 2.3 The 31AA module can be 120V or 230V by installing a jumper from Lo terminal to L2 terminal for 120V, or Hi terminal to L2 for 230/208V. 3.0 Non-Isolated Power Supply The 30AA and 31AA modules do not use step down transformers in converting the 120V or 240V line to a level the electronics can use. The 30AA power supply L2 leg is internally connected to S1, and the 31AA power supply L1 leg is internally connected to C. Since these terminals can be connected to one side of the line supply, care must be taken to warn users and installers of the non-isolated supply in order to avoid any possible shock hazard. 4.0 Output Control Terminals M1 and M2 In the 30AA and 31AA modules, the output control terminals M1 and M2 are switched by means of a single pole, single throw (SPST) electromechanical relay rated at 2.5 amps for any AC control voltage and 1.5 amps for DC. This relay may not provide proper continuity if the load on the control circuit is less than 100 milliamps/5vdc. It is suggested that a slave relay rated for the low DC power level be used for those applications. 5.0 Mounting 30AA and 31AA have a smaller hole pattern footprint so an additional 9/64 hole may need to be drilled in the mounting surface. Adapter brackets may be purchased from Texas Instruments (part number ), eliminating the need to drill the additional hole. The same mounting screws may be used. 6.0 Module Cross Reference Refer to Attachment 2 for a listing of the 15AA/MP50 modules and the replacement 30AA/31AA. Page 2
